Background and History

Samehada originated as a symbiotic creature of Isobu. It cleaned food residue from within the Three-Tails, extracted chakra from that residue, and stored and returned the chakra to nourish its host. Kirigakure later captured and modified it into a ninja sword, damaging the digestive system that had made this process efficient. Unable to comfortably digest ordinary food in its altered form, Samehada relied on absorbing chakra 155.

While wielded by Suikazan Fuguki, Samehada could heal him through Chakra Transfer, but was hungry and reluctant to do so after a prolonged fight. It became attracted to Umino Sasuke’s chakra during their battle, then broke free of Fuguki and approached Sasuke after absorbing more chakra from his Shadow Clones 151 154. Sasuke discovered that Samehada particularly enjoyed the food energy produced by his Gluttony Technique and began feeding it regularly 155 156.

Sasuke subsequently used Samehada both as a weapon and as a reserve of chakra. It absorbed a small Tailed Beast Ball, participated in a recurring energy-conversion cycle with Sasuke’s Chakra Outer Elixir, and eventually reached Kage-level strength 192 297 394. Later, acting in its restored beast form, it drained Karatachi Yagura’s incomplete Three-Tails cloak and brought the unconscious jinchūriki back to Sasuke 407.

Appearance

Samehada begins as a large, living sword, but its form changes markedly as Sasuke feeds and strengthens it 151 192 407.

• Barbed blade: Spikes beneath its bandages can emerge during an attack; damaged barbs regrow after it receives food energy 151 156.
• Growing body: Months of feeding leave it rounded like a fat fish with a handle; further cultivation thickens its scales and enlarges its teeth 192 297.
• Beast form: By the confrontation with Yagura, it no longer resembles a conventional sword and can swim and coil around a target 407.

Personality

Samehada expresses hunger, pleasure, fear and jealousy through movement and chakra-borne emotions. It fears the Seal Breaking Sword when Sasuke finds it, then seeks Sasuke’s attention after he takes the new weapon 155 206. It is strongly motivated by satisfying food energy, but becomes a loyal partner once Sasuke supplies it consistently and treats it as an intelligent creature rather than merely a sword 156.

Abilities & Skills

Chakra absorption and transfer

• Devours chakra from opponents and incoming ninjutsu, then stores or transfers it to a recipient 151 302 417.
• Extracts chakra efficiently from food energy supplied by Sasuke, allowing him to replenish his reserves and recover from injuries 155.
• Can transfer enough chakra to rapidly regenerate severe physical injuries, although Sasuke considers frequent cell regeneration risky 151 155.
• Can aid mental recovery, but this primarily physical recovery method consumes additional stored chakra 204.

Combat and fusion

• Its barbs can slash an opponent and absorb chakra on contact; it also serves as a defensive weapon against ninjutsu 151 301.
• Can fuse with Sasuke, increasing his combat strength and healing him after serious injury 166 354.
• In its later beast form, drains Yagura’s two-tailed chakra cloak in seconds, causing him to collapse 407.

Limits and vulnerabilities

• Its absorption capacity is finite: it can swallow a small Tailed Beast Ball, but Sasuke judges a large one beyond it 192.
• Powerful energy can injure it. Fuguki finds that it cannot absorb all the energy of Sasuke’s Vacuum Great Ball, while Dragon Vein energy causes severe internal distress 152 392.
• Chakra devouring has little effect on Ido, which is composed of negative mental energy rather than ordinary chakra 336.

Relationships

• Umino Sasuke — Chosen wielder and partner. Sasuke feeds it, communicates with it through chakra, and relies on it for combat and chakra recovery 155 156 297.
• Suikazan Fuguki — Former wielder. Samehada heals him in battle but ultimately leaves him for Sasuke 151 154.
• Isobu — Former symbiotic host. Samehada originally extracted chakra from food residue to nourish the Three-Tails; it later drains Isobu’s chakra through Yagura 155 407.
• Big White — Sasuke’s other summoning companion. Big White initially reacts with jealousy, and Sasuke presents Samehada as its “younger brother” 156.
