Background

Qi Shuang is a transmigrator who retains memories and knowledge from another life. In Kirigakure, he is raised as an orphan whose Ice Release emerged through distant hereditary atavism. He was formerly called Xiao Lin, but formally adopted the name Qi Shuang after Zabuza addressed him by the old one. 9 33 622

He withdrew from his first graduation examination after poisoning himself, concealing the deeper reasons behind his retreat. Following Zabuza’s graduation massacre, his teachers misread his sudden dedication as fear-driven motivation; in reality, he had begun deliberately cultivating chakra and Ice Release to survive as a shinobi. 8 101

His early combat experience includes fighting alongside Kamiya Ki against Konoha ninja, where he used Ice Release: Needle Rain Technique in the cover of Hidden Mist. He later severely injured Uchiha Jonin Uchiha Tai and evaded a killing blow with the Substitution Technique. 14 22 32

Appearance

Qi Shuang is generally depicted as a young man in white. His most distinctive traits emerge while using Sage Art or defensive techniques. 488 560

  • Sage Mode — Blue markings extend from his eyes along his nose, forming a mask-like pattern; he also manifests two permanent blue Dragon Horns. 362 527
  • Ice Release: Chakra Mode — His body is covered in semi-fluid ice slush that gives off a pale, shimmering white glow. 353 423
  • Dragon Heart Seal — His right eye emits a blue glow when the seal breaks genjutsu. 420
  • Sage Art baptism — Before mastering control, he developed scales, a forked tongue, claws, fangs, and more severe serpentine features. 345 350 360

Personality

Qi Shuang is analytical, cautious, and highly pragmatic. He studies opponents’ abilities, identifies technical weaknesses, and prepares counters long before a confrontation becomes unavoidable. His knowledge of future events and famous shinobi often informs his decisions, including his deliberate attempt to draw Orochimaru out through Kimimaro. 93 288 293 420

He is intensely committed to self-improvement. Rather than relying only on his inherited Ice Release, he studies Wind Release, Yang Release, sealing, Sage Art, and the theory behind chakra itself. His explanations of Natural Energy impress the White Snake Sage, who recognizes that his understanding surpasses that of the Snake Princesses. 265 334 622

Despite showing concern for allies and civilians, Qi Shuang can be coldly ruthless when he judges someone dangerous or deceptive. He kills Ichikishimahime’s disguised form after exposing her lie, kills a challenger in close combat, and treats overwhelming force as a necessary tool in war. 187 326 531

Abilities & Skills

Ice Release Kekkei Genkai

Qi Shuang’s primary ability is Ice Release, inherited through a diluted ancestral bloodline. His control develops from freezing small pools of water into an unusually versatile style capable of offense, defense, movement, restraint, and large-scale battlefield manipulation. 8 9

  • Water-to-ice conversion — Can freeze enemy Water Release, making his techniques especially dangerous against Kirigakure and Hozuki-style water techniques. 197 199 450
  • Ice Needles / Needle Rain — Creates aerial barrages of ice needles against obscured or distant targets. 14
  • Ice Wall and frost barriers — Produces defenses capable of stopping Snow Tiger’s Ice Tiger and Zabuza’s Water Dragon. 171 194
  • Torrential Rain Ice Kill — Uses cold air to turn falling rain into snow and ice; later incorporated into Burial Art. 103 286
  • Fleeting Bloom — Freezes targets rapidly enough to catch both Kimimaro and Orochimaru. 293
  • Ice Seal Technique — Freezes water, machinery, opponents, and areas into extremely resilient ice prisons. 197 445 531
    • Targets protected by Ice Seal are difficult for anyone—including Qi Shuang—to damage without first releasing the ice. 288
  • Ice Prison Water WallA personal secret technique that counters Water Release so completely that Ao warns it could make Kirigakure’s Anbu view Qi Shuang as a threat. 199
  • Magic Mirror Ice Crystal — Explores rapid movement through ice blocks by principles similar to space-time ninjutsu. 278

Ice Release: Chakra Mode

Qi Shuang coats his body in semi-fluid ice slush, creating a chakra armor that enhances defense and physical ability. It is the foundation of his survival during Sage Art baptism and later becomes compatible with Sage Mode. 353 631

  • Deflects weapons, senbon barrages, Lava Release mucus, and powerful close-range strikes. 423 429 442
  • Lets him withstand attacks that would otherwise be fatal, including direct exchanges with the Fourth Raikage. 554
  • Its defensive ice can be countered by precise Wind Release cutting and Lightning Release penetration. 265 554
  • Initially conflicts with Sage Mode because Chakra Mode releases internal energy while Sage Mode absorbs Natural Energy; Yang Release resolves this incompatibility. 630 631

Ice Release Body Flicker Technique

Qi Shuang can merge into ice and emerge elsewhere, allowing him to evade attacks and reposition through his own constructs. 323 447

  • Escapes a snake tide by entering an Ice Wall and reappearing behind it. 323
  • Avoids Sasori’s Iron Sand attacks by sinking into ice before resurfacing at another point. 447
  • Cannot be used continuously without interruption, leaving openings immediately after use. 447

Sage Art and Sage Mode

After undertaking the White Snake Sage’s trial at Ryūchi Cave, Qi Shuang receives a Seed of Sage Art and endures its dangerous daily purification process. His Ice Release: Chakra Mode prevents permanent serpent transformation while his body gradually adapts to Natural Energy. 341 353 355

  • Sage Mode — Greatly increases strength, speed, durability, recovery, chakra capacity, and Natural Energy control. 362
  • Eight Gates of Divine Sealing — Creates freezing chains that restrain Tailed Beasts, including the Six-Tails and Eight-Tails. 488 489 528
  • Snowfall in the Human World: Pure Land — Covers a vast area in Sage Art snow while confronting Kumogakure’s invasion fleet. 527
  • Eternal Ice Coffin — Freezes enemies across a wide maritime battlefield, immobilizing nearly a quarter of an opposing force in one strike. 531
  • Gun Forest Hell — Temporarily restrains Madara’s Limbo clones. 777
  • Uncontrolled Natural Energy can overwhelm human nature with serpentine and draconic traits, ultimately turning a Sage into stone. 781

Dragon Heart Seal

A Sage Art seal learned from Tagorihime, designed as a defense against genjutsu. It uses retained Natural Energy to disrupt a caster’s control of Qi Shuang’s chakra. 390 420

  • Automatically breaks Tobi’s Sharingan genjutsu. 420
  • Creates a Natural Energy barrier that ordinary genjutsu users cannot sense or manipulate. 420
  • Can replenish itself by absorbing surrounding Natural Energy if it is not completely destroyed or dispelled. 390

Wind Release

Qi Shuang studies Wind Release independently before seeking instruction from Asuma Sarutobi. He learns to produce extreme cutting power by controlling chakra flow and friction within the wind. 264 265

  • Creates Wind of Death, which slices through a large ice pillar with ease. 265
  • Understands Wind Release as a natural counter to his own Ice Release defenses. 265

Yang Release

Qi Shuang studies Yang Release through the Hozuki Clan’s Water Transformation Jutsu, initially seeking a way to heal Mei Terumi’s damaged meridians. 622

  • Mediates the fusion of Ice Release: Chakra Mode and Sage Mode. 630 631
  • Powers Sage Art: Yang Release: Dragon Life Reincarnation, which remakes his body into an innate Sage physique. 775
  • Allows him to perceive Madara’s Limbo clones after his bodily transformation. 775

Taijutsu and Tactical Combat

Qi Shuang is capable in close combat but acknowledges that he is less technically skilled than dedicated taijutsu specialists such as Tagorihime. 187 362

  • Defeats a ninjutsu-focused challenger by refusing to use ninjutsu and killing him in a swift taijutsu exchange. 187
  • Uses his enhanced Sage physique to contend physically with Tailed Beasts and overpower Madara in raw strength. 488 764
  • Favors careful battlefield control, combining Water Release, Ice Release, clones, traps, and sealing rather than relying solely on direct force. 286 445 777

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Sealing Scrolls — Used to carry supplies efficiently and to seal Rin Nohara’s remains. 262 313
  • Great Sword: Samehada — Carried during his retrieval of Kisame from Kirigakure’s fountain prison. 638
  • Orochimaru’s heart and blood beads — Used to summon Manda and preserve a means of contacting Ryūchi Cave’s snake clan. 315 319
  • Two Second Hokage forbidden jutsu — Obtained from Orochimaru in exchange for the scroll of Fleeting Bloom. 298 311

Relationships

  • Mei Terumi — Teammate, trusted confidante, and later Kirigakure’s Mizukage. Qi Shuang leaves her an ice snow lotus before secretly departing for Ryūchi Cave and later studies Yang Release partly to heal her meridian injuries. 33 315 622

Trivia

  • Qi Shuang has two small black moles between the toes of his right foot; this detail is exploited during Ichikishimahime’s Ryūchi Cave trial. 326
  • The title Blue-Eyes White Dragon originated from shinobi rumors about his floating ice techniques rather than from Qi Shuang himself. 564
  • He considers Naruto Uzumaki’s Sage Art cultivation speed unfairly fast compared with his own nearly two-and-a-half-year initial training period. 356
