Gordon composed himself and said with renewed resolve:
"The last bus has already left. I can only be grateful that my daughter left too..."
Batman's eyes beneath his mask were complicated, because he knew Barbara had not left.
Facing this old comrade-in-arms, he suddenly found it hard to suppress his guilt.
But he quickly reined in his emotions. "Do you have any information on Scarecrow?"
"There's one lead, though I don't know if it's reliable. Someone saw an unidentified military vehicle enter Chinatown."
"We tried tracking it... but we lost it. That's the only clue we have."
"Leave it to me."
After taking responsibility for the matter, Batman prepared to leave.
Gordon suddenly called out to him and asked with a complicated expression, "Do you think Scarecrow will really release lethal chemical gas throughout the city?"
He still harbored a sliver of hope. Other than gaining an empty city with no living people in it, what could Scarecrow possibly get from doing this?
He couldn't be a lunatic like Joker, could he? One madman like that was more than enough!
Batman did not answer directly. He only said, "James, I won't let that happen."
Gordon wanted to say more, but the radio at his waist crackled to life.
"All units, be advised. An emergency has been discovered in Sector 2."
"A patrol car is missing. Officers from Unit 2-47 are suspected to have come under gunfire!"
"Hey, Batman..."
By the time Gordon turned around, Batman had already vanished.
That feeling was really nostalgic. Gordon could not help cursing, "It's fucking like this every time..."
Meanwhile, Jason and Damian arrived in Gotham.
As for how they had gotten there so quickly, the answer was naturally Dane's teleportation magic.
Before Jason left, Dane had given him a Magic Bracelet that could teleport him directly to Dane's side when necessary.
This time, Jason was not alone. Damian had come as well.
"Magic? Cool."
Damian looked to be only eleven or twelve years old. He was short, probably around four feet seven inches tall.
He stared curiously at the Magic Bracelet on Jason's wrist, as though he were plotting something.
"So you're Damian?" Dane looked at the child with interest.
"Then you're that... magician guy?"
Damian spoke arrogantly. As the youngest Assassin Master in the history of the League of Assassins, he had every reason to be proud and feared no one.
Jason did not stop him. He knew Dane would show him exactly what it meant for there to always be someone stronger.
Sure enough, Dane was not angered by his words. He suddenly remembered how Doctor Strange had dealt with Loki in Thor 3.
He could borrow that trick.
Dane flicked his finger and snapped.
A circular ring instantly appeared beneath Damian's feet.
The boy was alert, though. He quickly spread his legs, trying to brace himself against the ring's edges with his feet.
But how could Dane let him succeed? He expanded the ring until it was just a little wider than Damian's spread legs, leaving him able to do nothing but watch himself fall through it.
"You—"
Once Damian had completely fallen in, Dane closed his hand, and the ring shrank away without a trace.
Well, he could fly around for half an hour.
The kid seemed fairly tough. Making him fly above Mount Everest for half an hour was not too much, right?
Dane stopped paying attention to the brat and turned back to Jason.
Hmm. Darker, sturdier, taller—and most importantly, there was more killing intent in his eyes.
His build and presence almost perfectly overlapped with the Arkham Knight from the game. All the effort Dane had put into creating that suit had not been wasted.
"You fully understand Gotham's situation now, right?"
Jason nodded.
"Good. I'll copy the intelligence from Barbara's computer for you now."
"If I'm right, Batman will act based on this information as well. What you do specifically is up to you."
"Thank you, Mr. Dane."
"No need to thank me. Just remember: whatever you do later, wipe out evil completely."
"Yes!" That was exactly to his liking.
Dane clapped his hands, and the scene shifted. They arrived at Umbrella Laboratory.
Inside the armory, there was no one else besides the two of them.
Dane walked up to a transparent Glass Case and pointed to the suit inside.
Its design was very similar to the Arkham Knight's suit, only much more futuristic.
Dane had also used nanomaterials in this suit, meaning Jason could assemble any weapon he wanted according to his needs.
Any weapon! As long as he had enough material, even assembling an RPG would not be a problem.
That meant as long as Jason still had enough nanomaterials on him, his ammunition would be inexhaustible. The only thing limiting his firepower would be energy.
Dane had also installed something similar to a Web-Shooter on the suit's wrists.
It could fire black, high-strength nano-filaments no more than three millimeters in diameter. They were practically invisible in the dark, yet incredibly strong—lifting a crane with them would not be a problem at all.
This nanomaterial was biodegradable and would snap off directly after use.
Whatever remained would automatically disappear once the waiting time was up, making it extremely convenient.
The Bat-Family's grappling guns were not only troublesome but hard to use. Batman had gotten them stuck several times while using them.
And the hook had to latch onto something before it could pull someone up, right?
If there was no conveniently placed gap, the hook itself had to punch a hole first before it could catch. Wasn't that just damaging the building?
What exactly were you protecting?!
After hearing Dane's introduction to the equipment, Jason's eyes lit up. They became especially fervent when he heard that the bullets could be used almost without limit.
"Alright, I've explained the basics. Discover the rest of its functions in actual combat."
"This suit comes with a subordinate AI of Cortana to help you understand its functions. You can put it on now."
The moment he finished speaking, the Glass Case opened automatically. The suit suddenly collapsed like fine sand, then flowed across the floor like water toward Jason.
Jason relaxed and naturally spread his body. The suit assembled itself over him as though it were alive.
The Arkham Knight was officially born!
Two blue Electronic Eyes lit up on the mask.
Jason clenched his fists and flexed his joints. He felt no restraints whatsoever; it moved so smoothly that it was almost like wearing nothing at all. He was even more satisfied.
He could not help thanking Dane again. "Thank you so much, Mr. Dane."
Dane waved his hand, and a door appeared beside him.
"Go on. Go announce your return to Gotham!"
What Does First-Person Shooter Even Mean?
After intercepting Barbara's voice message, Jason also headed toward Sector 2.
There, he saw Batman trying to rescue a police officer.
He did not approach. From the hijacked surveillance footage, he saw a private armed squad heading toward Chinatown, so he decided to pursue them.
With Dane's version of the "Web-Shooter," Jason's travel speed increased by more than a level. He reached the destination before the private soldiers in their armed transport vehicle.
Jason considered it, then controlled his suit to transform.
More than half the nanomaterials on his arm detached from his body. After shifting and reforming, they assembled into an RPG.
Jason aimed at the transport vehicle and pulled the trigger. The vehicle was blasted straight into the air, and it was somehow even more powerful than a real RPG!
After firing, the launcher automatically collapsed back into the armor on his arm. Jason fired out a black cord and swung down beside the overturned transport vehicle.
He yanked open the door and dragged out a private soldier who had been blown senseless.
"Tell me where Scarecrow is."
"Go to hell, you freak!"
"Looks like you don't understand my style."
Jason smiled at the insult. With a sweep of his hand at his waist, a large pistol resembling a Desert Eagle appeared in his grip.
He pressed the gun beneath the private soldier's chin.
"I'll ask you one more time. Where is Scarecrow?"
A trace of fear flashed through the private soldier's eyes. "Impossible. You won't kill me!"
"Do you fucking think I'm that idiot Batman?"
Jason cursed and decisively fired at the soldier's foot. Instantly, half of his foot vanished.
"Ahhh—! Fuck you!"
The private soldier was in so much pain he could barely breathe, throwing his head back in a miserable scream.
Jason coldly pressed the gun against his face again. "I'll ask you one last time. Where is Scarecrow?"
This time, the private soldier was truly terrified. He hurriedly said, "I only know he's on the top floor of an apartment building in Chinatown. I really don't know anything else."
Jason released him, and the private soldier fell directly to the ground. Clutching the half of his foot that remained, he continued screaming miserably.
Jason raised his gun and fired once, completely ending his suffering.
After taking care of the man, Jason began searching the body and soon found a syringe.
He removed the needle tube and placed it against his arm. The miniature computer on his arm automatically assembled into a chemical analyzer.
"Looks like this is Scarecrow's new toy. But how does he plan to spread this throughout the whole city?"
Having the private soldiers inject people one by one would be far too inefficient.
He continued toward the next location. With Cortana's help, he was not completely without leads.
When Batman finished handling matters over there and arrived, he found the area littered with the bodies of private soldiers, each bearing obvious gunshot wounds.
He immediately contacted Barbara.
"Barbara, pull the footage from all nearby surveillance cameras over the last half hour. I need to know who did this."
"Hold on..."
Oracle Barbara worked for a moment before delivering some bad news to Batman.
"No. I can't find it."
"What do you mean, 'can't find it'?"
"It means someone erased that segment of surveillance footage, or the cameras lost connection during that period and recorded nothing at all."
Batman's expression darkened. He keenly sensed that another force had become involved in this incident. Who was it?
