Background / History
Tokiomi Tohsaka entrusts Rin and her younger sister, Sakura, to Mo Li's instruction in magecraft and martial arts. Mo Li initially teaches them Matou-family magecraft because of their young age and undeveloped bodies. 6
During the Fifth Holy Grail War, Rin learns from Shirou Emiya that Matou Shinji has become a Master and that Sakura has been drawn into the conflict. Though she initially presents Sakura as a stranger, she recognizes the danger facing her sister. 263
Rin accepts a truce with Shirou until they reach the Greater Grail: Shirou pursues the black shadow to prevent further victims, while Rin takes responsibility for tracing Matou Zouken and resolving the Tohsaka–Matou family's karmic conflict. 274
After Mo Li reveals that Kirei Kotomine murdered Tokiomi under Gilgamesh's influence, Rin seeks personal revenge. She refuses Shirou's offer to take her place, defeats Kirei through gem magecraft and reinforced close combat, and kills him herself. Mo Li restrains her only after Kirei is already dead. 319 333 334
After her world's Fifth Holy Grail War, Rin travels with Mo Li to another world and reunites with versions of her parents who are still alive. She confronts Tokiomi over Sakura's treatment by the Matou family and challenges his plans to preserve the Tohsaka bloodline through political marriage. 340 349 350
In the Sixth Singularity, Rin chooses to aid Ritsuka Fujimaru's Chaldea rather than remain aimless after the war. She becomes the Lion King's Jewel Knight and ultimately adopts saving the world as the purpose of her journey. 574 588 738
Appearance
Rin is described as naturally stunning and conspicuous, particularly when wearing clothing unlike the local era's fashion. 588
- Often wears a modern-style dress extending slightly below her knees. 588
- Later receives and wears a fiery red Mystic Code robe. 645
- Uses gems and the Jewel Sword as recognizable components of her magecraft. 327 520
Personality
Rin is independent, confrontational, and unwilling to accept orthodox magus values merely because they are tradition. She openly opposes Tokiomi's plan to merge the Tohsaka family with Mo Li's family, even after learning how much the alliance has strengthened the family. 350
Her concern for Sakura remains complicated. Rin acknowledges Sakura's suffering but deliberately refuses to offer sympathy during their confrontation, believing she must break Sakura's corrupted mindset so Shirou can reach her. She also keeps her promise not to pursue Shirou despite having feelings for him. 328 351
Rin can become frighteningly ruthless when acting on personal conviction. Her revenge against Kirei is driven by rage and grief, and she continues attacking his corpse until Mo Li intervenes. 334
Despite her pride, Rin is protective of her allies and attentive to their burdens. She worries when Heroic Spirit Cards draw on Mo Li's mana, insists on helping Ritsuka despite the danger, and seeks greater strength so she can contribute directly. 606 588 605
Abilities & Skills
Jewel Magic
Rin specializes in the Tohsaka family's Jewel Magic, storing and releasing magecraft through gems.
- Produces barriers strong enough to block incoming weapons and repel an attacking Hassan of the Hundred Faces. 265
- Releases large-scale fire and lightning magecraft through gems. 305
- Fires destructive magic bullets capable of destroying Kirei Kotomine's Black Key and severing his arm. 334
- Uses gems for emergency movement support, including cushioning a fall and floating safely to the ground. 569
- Her pre-blessing fighting style consumes gems extravagantly; she initially lacks Tokiomi's technique for restoring shattered jewels. 500
Shadow of Jewels
A divine blessing granted by the Lion King to address the consumable nature of Rin's Jewel Magic. 520
- Projects a jewel again after it has been used.
- Cannot project a jewel beyond the limit of its original version. 520
- Lets Rin repeatedly employ the Jewel Sword's concept after she learns to project it. 588
Jewel Sword and Parallel-World Magecraft
The Jewel Sword gives Rin immense magical output but places severe strain on her body. 317
- Erases Sakura's cages, derivatives, and self-destructing familiars with overwhelming magical energy. 327
- Fires a beam of light that kills Cú Chulainn. 327
- Can be thrown into hostile magecraft before Rin triggers “Phenomenon, collapse” to break through Sakura's defenses. 329
- Its projection helps Rin understand parallel worlds and qualify as a reserve Second Magus. 588 716
Reinforcement Magecraft and Hand-to-Hand Combat
Rin reinforces her body with magecraft and supplements her spellcasting with close-quarters combat.
- Possesses notable physical ability even before Greater Grail enhancement. 305
- Her reinforced punches can shatter basalt. 334
- Fights Kirei directly while maneuvering around his Black Keys and magical defenses. 333 334
- After the Greater Grail's enhancement, her baseline parameters reach C+, making her physical strength comparable to her former reinforced state even before casting reinforcement. 686
Heroic Spirit Card: Siegfried
Mo Li gives Rin Siegfried's Heroic Spirit Card to compensate for her weakness in close combat. 605
- Temporarily grants a Servant's base statistics and abilities using Mo Li's mana. 606
- Allows Rin to wield Balmung and gain combat experience close to Siegfried's. 657
- Siegfried's armor substantially reduces the effect of Tomoe Gozen's attacks. 657
Mastership
Rin is an experienced Holy Grail War Master and later manages Servant contracts alongside Chaldea.
- Summoned Archer because of their intertwined fate. 459
- Supplies Jeanne d'Arc's mana and coordinates her in battle. 640
- Maintains Jeanne d'Arc and Vlad the Impaler III, then transfers additional contracts to Chaldea, bringing her Servant count to five. 667
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Jewel Sword — Tohsaka family treasure with immense magical output; later projectable through Shadow of Jewels. 317 520

- Mo Li's amulet — Contains Mo Li's power and is accepted by Rin as aid during the conflict with Sakura. 318
- Golden defensive barrier — A gift from Mo Li that can withstand even a Servant's attack and protects Rin from the explosion of her own gem attack. 327 328 334

- Tohsaka Aoi — Mother. Aoi encourages Rin to consider her own happiness and presses her about her feelings after the Fifth Holy Grail War. 351
- Kirei Kotomine — Tokiomi's betraying disciple and Rin's father's murderer. Rin kills him to complete her revenge. 319 333 334
- Ritsuka Fujimaru — Chaldea ally. Rin chooses to join and support Ritsuka's world-saving mission despite its danger. 588 738
- Archer — Rin's Servant, summoned because their fates are intertwined. Rin can pressure him with knowledge of his identity. 379 459
- Gilgamesh — A Servant under Rin's contract in the Holy Grail War competition. Rin remains prejudiced against him because Gilgamesh influenced Kirei's betrayal of Tokiomi in her world. 385
- Ishtar — A goddess possessing another world's Rin. The two recognize each other as counterparts and discuss Rin's feelings for Mo Li. 735 738
- Jeanne d'Arc and Vlad the Impaler III — Servants whose mana burden Rin can sustain with her Mystic Code. 640 667
