Background / History

Hirata's aversion to bullying stems from middle school. When a longtime friend became a target, he initially followed the surrounding atmosphere and looked away; the friend later attempted suicide. Furious that the perpetrators felt no guilt and found new victims, Hirata retaliated by violently attacking both the bullies and the person being bullied, believing everyone involved bore responsibility. The incident destabilized the grade and prompted stricter school management; Hirata was disciplined, though it was not entered into his record. 40 41

He came to Advanced Nurturing High School intending to start over. Having concluded that bullying grows from a collective atmosphere that tolerates harm, he resolved to build a class defined by harmony, mutual aid, and graduation together. 41

From the first day, Hirata organized Class D's social structure: he planned self-introductions, a class gathering, and delegated a girls' gathering to Kushida. When Bai Lan alienated the class, Hirata approached Ayanokoji for help understanding him and later led meetings that reframed Bai's conduct as self-sacrificing warnings for the class. 11 12 15

Bai Lan's criticism of Hirata's idealism eventually pushed him into losing control. Hirata threw a punch at Bai, but Bai countered and threw him into a lake.
