History
Founding and the Nine-Tails Incident
Senju Hashirama founded Konoha and established the ninja village system. His approach to peace included distributing the tailed beasts among the shinobi nations 210 294.
On October 10 of Konoha Year 51, Uchiha Obito attacked Kushina’s guarded delivery room, abducted her newborn son Menma, and unleashed the Nine-Tails on Konoha. Civilians fled to emergency shelters while the village’s ninja attempted to stop the beast 1.
Minato and Kushina sacrificed themselves to protect the village. They divided the Nine-Tails, sealing its yang half inside Naruto. Obito left Menma at the outskirts orphanage, where Yakushi Nonō took him in 1 499.
Hiruzen concealed Naruto’s parentage and treated the missing twin’s survival as practically impossible after Anbu searches recovered bloodstained swaddling cloth. Naruto consequently grew up without knowing either his parents’ identities or Menma’s relationship to him 428 499.
Early Encounters with Asura
During the attempted abduction of the Hyuga clan’s eldest daughter by Kumogakure envoys, the mysterious ninja Asura appeared in the Hyuga compound and killed the abductors. Konoha subsequently strengthened its barrier defenses 12 459.
Asura later attacked the Hyuga Main House again. His Nine Masked Beasts suppressed Konoha’s responding forces while he took Byakugan from Main House elders and Hizashi Hyuga. Hiruzen attempted to break through the battlefield barrier while limiting civilian casualties 115 116.
Unknown to the village, Asura was Menma. He maintained an ordinary childhood identity in Konoha while building the Land of Stars, often using a Shadow Clone to attend the Ninja Academy 177 459.
Uchiha Crisis and Clan Defections
The Sharingan visible in the Nine-Tails’ eyes fueled suspicion of Konoha’s Uchiha clan. Village authorities imposed surveillance, political exclusion, and residential relocation, steadily increasing the clan’s resentment 129 231.
Shisui’s disappearance intensified the conflict. The Uchiha decided to rebel, and Itachi reported their plans to Hiruzen. Danzō proposed using Itachi to disrupt the clan and eliminate its radical members; the leadership ultimately ordered Itachi to destroy the rebellious clan 235 339.
Menma’s forces intervened during the purge. Surviving Uchiha fought alongside the Hoshinin, while Hizashi, Neji, and other Hyuga Branch House ninja escaped toward the Land of Stars. The Uchiha clan and Hyuga Branch House subsequently joined Menma’s country, substantially increasing its experienced military personnel 249 255 293.
Most destruction occurred on Konoha’s outskirts. Losses remained below those of the Nine-Tails Incident, with casualties concentrated among Anbu, Root, and responding reinforcements 256.
Joint Chunin Exams and Konoha Crush
In Konoha Year 63, the village expanded its joint Chunin Exams invitations to include numerous villages, including Kumogakure and Orochimaru’s Otogakure. Asura attended as a formally invited diplomatic guest, though Konoha’s Anbu remained ready to intervene against him 359 373.
Orochimaru prepared sixty elite infiltrators in twenty squads, using a known flaw in Konoha’s barrier. Their supplies included Explosive Tags, poison gas bombs, and smoke bombs intended to destroy important facilities and spread confusion 399.
The invasion breached Konoha’s wall and struck the exam venue. Clan ninja organized counterattacks under Shikaku’s command, while Hiruzen fought Orochimaru and the reincarnated First and Second Hokage. Hiruzen died during the attack 428 429 436 449.
Menma exposed his authority over the Land of Stars and his identity as Naruto’s brother. His delegation withdrew after tying down Konoha forces and recovering Uchiha records and secret-technique scrolls that Konoha had retained as village property 435 457.
Leadership Crisis and Opposition to the Land of Stars
Hiruzen’s death left Konoha facing a succession dispute. Emergency procedures allowed the Jonin Council and advisory elders to nominate an acting Hokage pending the formal selection of the Fifth Hokage. Koharu and Homura supported Danzō’s camp, while Shikaku feared further division 460 464.
Danzō became acting Hokage. Naruto and Sasuke left for the Land of Stars, and other young Konoha ninja later visited that country before returning to face questioning from Konoha’s Interrogation Division 489 538 546.
Konoha participated in the Five Kage Summit in the Land of Iron, where Ōnoki proposed forming Shinobi Allied Forces to overthrow the Land of Stars 518 520.

- Hyuga emergency mobilization: More than sixty chunin and nearly twenty special jonin and jonin are immediately available during Konoha Crush, with a separate detachment assigned to protect the clan grounds 449.
- Anti-infiltration coordination: Hyuga ninja join nearby three-person squads to identify transformed enemies and guide attacks while prioritizing civilians and important facilities 449.
- Tactical vulnerabilities: Shikaku’s Shadow Possession repeatedly fails against ninja protected inside Susanoo, while Asura’s concealment defeats the Hyuga’s Byakugan during his compound attack 115 255.
Society and Education
Will of Fire
Konoha’s education promotes the Will of Fire. Hiruzen wants Naruto to receive instruction in it and build friendships with clan children at the academy. Menma rejects those teachings as hypocritical in light of the villagers’ treatment of Naruto 84 177.
Prejudice Against Naruto
Many adults identify Naruto with the Nine-Tails disaster, avoid him, and forbid their children from playing with him. Iruka initially shares that resentment because his parents died during the attack, but later recognizes Naruto’s need for acknowledgment 40 428.
Menma, Hinata, Teuchi, and Ayame provide exceptions to that rejection. Naruto’s academy friendships eventually broaden to include Choji, Kiba, Sasuke, and others 40 177 234.
Hyuga Reforms
Under Hinata’s leadership, the Hyuga abolish the Main House–Branch House division and Caged Bird system, integrate clan resources, and open formerly restricted Gentle Fist techniques to all members. These changes strengthen clan cohesion. After the Senju merge into Konoha and the Uchiha depart, the Hyuga become its leading noble clan 449 538.
