Background / History

During the Second Shinobi World War, Jiraiya fought Hanzo alongside the other Sannin. He subsequently stayed in the Land of Rain to teach the war orphans Yahiko, Nagato, and Konan, giving them ninjutsu for survival and encouraging their hopes for peace 266 269.

Jiraiya also served as a commander during the Third Shinobi World War. Shisui Uchiha and Hizashi Hyuga served under him, with Hizashi acting as his deputy. His wartime record made him a valuable target in the underground bounty market 549 556.

In Konoha’s fifty-first year, after the Third Shinobi World War, Jiraiya and Tsunade left the village to travel and train. During the later conflict with Kumogakure, he stayed near the Land of Fire–Land of Hot Water border so he could respond quickly if Hiruzen needed him 32.

Alongside his shinobi career, Jiraiya wrote fiction. Minato chose the name Naruto from the protagonist of one of his novels for his unborn son 345.

Appearance

Jiraiya is a tall man with long, spiky white hair, commonly tied into a ponytail 345 437.

  • Clothing: Red outer robe or haori and wooden clogs 345.
  • Forehead protector: Marked with the character for “oil” 428.
  • Eyes: Described as having golden pupils 264.
  • Sage Mode features: Red markings around the eyes, toad-like pupils, and a broadened nose; Fukasaku and Shima perch on his shoulders when assisting him 272 552.

Personality

Jiraiya is boisterous, irreverent, and openly lecherous. He drinks with geishas, looks for “inspiration” around bathhouses, and becomes distracted by casino hostesses even during a serious visit. He also enjoys teasing acquaintances and startling them with theatrical entrances 12 345 370 428.

His frivolity disappears when people he cares about are endangered. Reading the records of Orochimaru’s human experiments makes his hands tremble before he immediately sets out to confront him. He similarly abandons his meal and rushes to Mount Myoboku when warned of an invasion 32 549.

As a teacher, Jiraiya combines affection with a strong sense of responsibility. He refuses to regret saving the Rain orphans, but feels guilt over their suffering and believes he must stop Nagato’s destructive course. His attachment to Konoha also sustains his faith in Minato and Kushina despite revelations that challenge his understanding of their fate 268 269 461.

His travels gradually undermine his reliance on prophecy and inherited assumptions. The Land of Stars’ prosperity does not resemble the darkness foretold by the Great Toad Sage, while conversations with its young soldiers expose suffering and oppression he had not adequately understood 345 550 557.

Abilities & Skills

Sage Mode

Jiraiya absorbs natural energy and combines it with his chakra to produce senjutsu chakra. Sage Mode greatly increases his speed and strength, but his version is explicitly described as incomplete 274 550.

  • Preparation: Requires concentration and time; he relies on summoned allies to protect him while gathering natural energy 269 270.
  • Sage assistance: Fukasaku and Shima help him enter and maintain the transformation by supplying senjutsu chakra 550 555.
  • Environmental advantage: Mount Myoboku’s abundant natural energy lets him attempt the transformation without their initial assistance 550 551.
  • Maintenance limit: After Fukasaku is killed, Shima alone cannot sustain the necessary balance, and Jiraiya loses Sage Mode 555.
  • Chakra theft: Samehada can consume his senjutsu chakra, further exhausting his remaining supply 552 555.

Toad Summoning

His contract with Mount Myoboku provides combat partners, specialized summons, and transportation 12 268 269 370.

  • Gamaken: Shields him while he prepares Sage Mode and assists against Pain’s summoned beasts 269 270.
  • Gamabunta: Supports confrontations with powerful enemies and the defense of Mount Myoboku 370 549 550.
  • Toad of the Shop: Captures Rain shinobi inside its body; its mucus weakens their resistance and induces hallucinations during interrogation 268.
  • Reverse Summoning Technique: Allows Jiraiya to travel to Mount Myoboku 12 549.

Hair Manipulation

Jiraiya can lengthen, harden, and precisely control his white hair for restraint, attack, and defense 269 274 555.

  • Wild Lion’s Mane Jutsu: Binds opponents and summoned creatures; he uses it against Konan, Pain’s giant crab, and Asura Path Pain 269 274.
  • Needle Jizo: Forms a hardened protective cocoon and can extend into piercing spikes 274 555.
  • Senjutsu enhancement: His sage-chakra-infused hair becomes a ranged barrage capable of attacking several targets 274.
  • Defensive limit: Pain’s coordinated pincer attack still wounds his arm through his defensive response 274.

Fire Release and Rasengan

Technique Applications and limits
Fire Style: Great Flame Bullet Launches a large fireball against Konan and helps destroy Pain’s summoned beasts 269 270.
Sage Art: Fire Style: Great Flame Bomb Senjutsu-enhanced fire attack used during the battle with Pain 274.
Rasengan Jiraiya knows Minato’s technique and later supervises Naruto’s mastery of its one-handed form 317 370 476.
Sage Art: Ultra-Big Ball Rasengan Creates a greatly enlarged senjutsu sphere that destroys Animal Path Pain; Jiraiya is struck by Deva Path immediately afterward 274.
Sage Art: Goemon Used jointly with the toad sages at Mount Myoboku; countered by Kisame’s Water Style: Exploding Water Colliding Wave 553.

Coordinated Toad Sage Techniques

These techniques belong to Fukasaku and Shima’s support repertoire rather than Jiraiya acting alone 274.

  • Sage Art: Frog Call: Sound waves disrupt the enemy’s auditory nerves and balance, creating openings for Jiraiya 274.
  • Sage Art: Toad Song: An auditory genjutsu that can trap enemies within hearing range once completed. It requires preparation, and the Pains resist its effects 274.
  • Water Style: Water Severing Wave: Fukasaku’s compressed water attack works alongside Shima’s tongue restraints to pressure a target from multiple directions 274.

Infiltration, Sensing, and Tactical Analysis

Jiraiya gathers intelligence through disguises, interrogation, covert movement, and combat observation 267 268 270 307.

  • Ramen-shop cover: Poses as a shop owner in Amegakure and probes Menma’s identity through conversation 267 268.
  • Shadow Toad Technique: Flattens himself into a shinobi’s shadow and takes control of that person’s body 268.
  • Sensory barrier: Detects anything entering an invisible field around him, even while his hands remain occupied gathering natural energy 270.
  • Combat deductions: Recognizes that Pain’s summoned beasts—and potentially the bodies confronting him—are controlled puppets 270.
  • Risk assessment: Avoids provoking Asura while injured and lacking intelligence, recognizing that a fight could destroy his mission and trigger wider consequences 307.

Equipment / Items

  • Mount Myoboku toad oil: Applied to his face before attempting Sage Mode during the mountain’s invasion 550.
  • Large scroll: Carried on his back while accompanying Boruto and Sasuke toward the Land of Waves 377.

  • Boruto — Unfamiliar boy whom Jiraiya rescues after recognizing his Rasengan; Jiraiya then questions and watches over him 370 371.

Story Role / Major Arcs

The Child of Darkness Prophecy

Jiraiya receives the Great Toad Sage’s warning that a Child of Darkness will bring catastrophe to the shinobi world. He reports the prophecy to Hiruzen, but Orochimaru’s exposed human experiments temporarily displace it as his immediate concern 12 32.

As the Land of Stars expands, Jiraiya suspects its mysterious leader, Asura, may be the prophesied threat. Hiruzen orders him to infiltrate the country, but he first detours through the Land of Rain to investigate Akatsuki and his former students 264 265.

Amegakure Investigation and Battle with Pain

Undercover in Amegakure, Jiraiya encounters Menma and Ajisai. Interrogating Rain shinobi reveals that Hanzo collaborated with Konoha forces in the ambush that killed Yahiko; Jiraiya strongly suspects Danzo’s involvement 267 268.

His reunion with Konan and Nagato becomes a confrontation over Akatsuki’s abandoned ideals. He enters Sage Mode, destroys Animal Path Pain, and suffers grievous injuries from the other Pains’ coordinated attacks 269 272 274.

The battle between Menma and Jigen interrupts his impending execution. Jiraiya escapes with the toad sages’ support and ultimately leaves Amegakure with Ajisai’s help 274 277 438.

Traveling Through the Land of Stars

Traveling with Ajisai, Jiraiya helps a young Land of Stars squad fight bandits near Gunma Village. In Ageo City, Shisui challenges his accepted account of the Hyuga and Uchiha upheavals in Konoha 304 305.

Menma then confronts him with practical questions about peace: how a unified world would be governed and how its people would attain happiness. Jiraiya continues traveling through the country for two years, observing its cities, construction projects, agricultural development, refugee assistance, and civilian life 307 345.

Despite his changing outlook, he returns to Konoha because he still considers it home and wants to see Minato and Kushina’s son approaching graduation 345.

Boruto, Sasuke, and Naruto’s Protection

Jiraiya intervenes when Asura restrains two unfamiliar travelers, rescuing Boruto after seeing him use the Rasengan. He summons Gamabunta, then takes responsibility for questioning Boruto and the injured adult Sasuke once Hiruzen stabilizes the confrontation diplomatically 370 371.

Their warning about an enemy targeting the Nine-Tails draws his serious attention. He later accompanies them toward the Land of Waves, sharing responsibility for Naruto’s covert protection 372 377.

Chunin Exams and Hiruzen’s Death

Investigating Menma’s childhood, Jiraiya learns that his hair was originally blond and considers whether he could be Minato and Kushina’s other child. The invasion of Konoha interrupts his inquiry 428.

He reaches the rooftop where Orochimaru has trapped Hiruzen with the reincarnated First and Second Hokage. Hiruzen entrusts him with the Hokage position before dying, while Orochimaru reveals that Minato and Kushina survive in the Land of Stars 437 439.

The designation does not immediately make Jiraiya Hokage: a subsequent meeting pits his supporters against Danzo’s faction over the acting leadership, and Danzo is later identified as acting Hokage 464 548.

Afterward, Jiraiya tells Naruto about his parents and identifies Menma as his older twin brother and Asura. He continues Naruto’s training, but later receives the urgent report that Naruto has defected 461 476 479.

Defense of Mount Myoboku and Capture

Kosuke’s warning brings Jiraiya to a flooded, devastated Mount Myoboku. Land of Stars shinobi present an investigation warrant accusing the toads of supplying senjutsu chakra to Iwagakure’s rebels; Jiraiya rejects their authority to intervene in the sage regions 548 549.

Although the Land of Stars’ prosperity has made him doubt the prophecy, he chooses to defend his contracted allies. Gamabunta and Gamaken protect him while he prepares Sage Mode, and Fukasaku and Shima return to support him 550 551 552.

Hizashi kills Fukasaku with a long-range sniper shot, causing Jiraiya’s Sage Mode to collapse. Pressured by coordinated attacks, Jiraiya dives underwater, where Kisame’s Samehada Fusion Form overwhelms and incapacitates him 553 555.

Kisame prevents Kakuzu from finishing him off because Jiraiya is Minato’s teacher. Captured and evacuated by the Hoshinin, Jiraiya awakens in a field hospital, where conversations with young soldiers further challenge his worldview. He resolves to recover and seek answers from Minato 556 557.
