"Hmm?!"

Stopping his frog-jump training, Ronglin was quite surprised. The great genius Kakashi had actually invited him to spar. If their classmates found out, their jaws would probably hit the floor.

Getting to his feet and stretching his limbs, Ronglin grinned. "It'll interrupt my training and waste some time, but this seems like a pretty good suggestion."

Like he had said before, just because he would not deliberately fight for something did not mean Ronglin did not care about it.

"Then let's begin." Kakashi tightened his grip on the kunai in his hand. He did not underestimate Ronglin in the slightest, assuming a serious fighting stance.

Today seemed to be getting more and more interesting. Ronglin smiled and nodded. "All right, let's begin."

A kunai appeared in Ronglin's hand as well. What made Kakashi unhappy, however, was that Ronglin seemed to be looking at him with a trace of mockery in his eyes. Yes, mockery—Kakashi was certain he had not seen wrong.

How could Kakashi, who was praised and admired everywhere he went, possibly stand for that? Thus, the moment their two kunai came down, the battle erupted.

Clang!!

Able to graduate with the title of genius, Kakashi was far stronger than others his age. Yet Ronglin was even more monstrous. The two small figures collided, and their kunai struck each other with a crisp ring.

Ronglin did not use the Sharingan or the Byakugan.

Tremendous force traveled through the kunai into both their arms. Kakashi's usually narrowed eyes widened in shock. He could not believe that Ronglin's speed and strength were both greater than his.

He had launched the attack first, yet Ronglin had moved after him and still arrived first, even covering a greater distance than he had. That alone was enough to prove that Ronglin was faster than him!!

And aside from speed, the force transmitted through the kunai had nearly knocked the weapon from Kakashi's hand.

"It's not good to lose focus in battle."

Seeing the shock in Kakashi's eyes, Ronglin smiled and teased him. The kunai in his right hand flashed into his left hand like lightning, then slashed forward in one smooth motion.

Kakashi was instantly alarmed. He realized that he had been careless—he had actually lost focus in the middle of a fight. Borrowing the remaining recoil, he rapidly retreated. A glint flashed past, and Ronglin stood where he was with his kunai, not pressing his advantage.

Kakashi's expression was ugly. If his reaction had been any slower just now, he would have been in serious trouble. Even so, his clothes had been sliced cleanly open from shoulder to waist by the kunai.

Fast, ruthless, precise!

In just an instant, Kakashi had witnessed Ronglin's terrifying strength.

"If—just if—my kunai had gone two centimeters farther forward, what do you think would have happened?"

The kunai in Ronglin's hand spun rapidly, tracing several gleaming arcs.

"..." Kakashi kept a dark expression and said nothing. The answer was obvious. If it had gone another two centimeters forward, a fatal wound would have appeared on his body.

With a single exchange, the difference between them was clear. To Ronglin, Kakashi was still too inexperienced. Even with a powerful Old Man teaching him, he still had far too many weaknesses.

Every major ninja village produced many geniuses each year, but how many of them actually grew to the end while carrying that title?

"Two interesting kids." Inside the Hokage's Office in the Hokage's Office Building, the Third Hokage looked at the crystal ball before him, a smile flashing in his eyes.

Ronglin had long been mentally prepared for the possibility that the Third Hokage might spy through the crystal ball. As long as he did not discover certain secrets, it was fine. In fact, Ronglin almost wished the Third Hokage would watch him more, so that he could receive more resources. Without a clan to rely on, Ronglin could only fight for them himself.

Other than what a clan could provide, what better choice was there than gaining the Hokage's attention?
