He knew that if those words got out, plenty of people would curse him. Ronglin did not care, but no one wanted to be cursed for no reason. Besides, this person had managed to approach him without making a sound, which greatly startled Ronglin.
"Uncle White Fang?"
Ronglin stared blankly at the man before him. The one who had just spoken was Kakashi's father—Hatake Sakumo.
Konoha's powerful White Fang.
Unfortunately, the White Fang no longer possessed the bearing of a strong man. He looked haggard, his face pale and utterly bloodless.
It was clear that he had not been doing well these past few days. The accusations from the villagers and his comrades had wounded him deeply and filled him with guilt.
Knowing that his son had endured immense pressure because of him, White Fang had come to the training ground. He had not expected to overhear the conversation between the two of them, and could not help but ask a question—only to receive a startling answer.
That was right. Was guilt of any use?
Rather than looking in the mirror and grieving, he should think about how to make up for the village's losses. As the head of the Hatake clan and Kakashi's father, if even he sank into despair, what would become of the Hatake clan? What would become of Kakashi?
Danzo had been secretly weakening the major clans within the village. White Fang knew very well what treatment the Hatake clan would receive if he were gone.
White Fang, who had entertained thoughts of ending his own life these past few days, broke out in a cold sweat. Ronglin's words were like a great hammer striking his heart viciously, yet they also scattered the clouds that had long shrouded his mind, revealing warm sunlight.
"I'm very glad that Kakashi has a friend like you."
White Fang forced out a smile, but paired with his haggard face and the bloodshot veins in his eyes, it looked terribly unpleasant.
White Fang was no stranger to Uchiha Ronglin. The once supremely confident Kakashi had suffered defeat at his hands, and the Third Hokage thought highly of him, even specially arranging for Tsunade to become his teacher.
Kakashi had also changed greatly because of him. He no longer stubbornly fixated on missions and had begun returning to the Academy to continue his studies.
And after this incident, while everyone else distanced themselves from Kakashi, Ronglin had not. On the contrary, he had come to comfort him, causing White Fang's favorable impression of Ronglin to grow without limit.
"Thank you for the compliment, Uncle White Fang."
Ronglin smiled and scratched his head. If it was White Fang, then there was nothing strange about him approaching silently. The gap in their strength was simply far too great.
"I was wrong. I made you suffer. Come home with me. The Hatake clan still needs me, Hatake Sakumo, and it also needs you, Hatake Kakashi."
Looking at his son's deeply embarrassed expression, White Fang wished he could slap himself several times. He had caused all of this himself. After something like this happened, not only had he failed to steady the faith of his clansmen and son, but he had even taken the lead in sighing and wallowing in self-blame. That was not what a man should do.
It seemed that he had unknowingly done something remarkable.
Watching Kakashi and White Fang's retreating backs, Ronglin habitually pinched his chin. After a long while, he could not help but laugh. He was also looking forward to it—if White Fang did not die by suicide as he had in the original story, things would become interesting.
The turmoil surrounding the White Fang incident continued, but White Fang's next actions astonished the entire village. He no longer sought forgiveness, nor did he pay attention to the accusations. As before, he did whatever he needed to do, constantly coming and going from the Hokage's Office Building.
"Do you think that's possible? Does Uchiha Ronglin really have such great charm?"
Inside the Hokage's Office, the Third Hokage wore a relieved smile. He was very happy that White Fang had managed to step out of this incident's shadow.
Missions were important, but powerful people were even more important, especially while Konoha was in a weakened state. However, the Third Hokage could not help but feel both amused and helpless about White Fang's request.
It was one thing to give up the position of ANBU Captain, but why lower yourself so much?
"I don't know. Things that make you feel unbelievable can happen around that kid at any time."
Tsunade was not as leisurely as the Third Hokage. White Fang's actions had put her in a difficult position.
Because White Fang hoped that Tsunade would take over the position of ANBU Captain. Although many people had their eyes on that position, the previous ANBU Captain had made the proposal, even though he had committed a grave mistake.
