History
Founding and Earlier Regional Influence
Great Xuan has existed for approximately a thousand years. Its rise, alongside Great Chu’s expansion, cost Great Yan substantial territory and reduced Yan to a medium-sized country 281 394.
According to archival records recounted by Emperor Xuan, Great Xuan was the surrounding region’s dominant power three hundred years earlier. Fusang sent impoverished envoys to study its culture and institutions. The emperor of that era provided clothing, lodging, instruction, martial arts manuals, and medicinal herbs; the departing envoys pledged lasting obedience and friendship 173.
Fusang Invasion and Northern Mobilization
After Su Fei killed Matsumoto Masahito, Fusang’s emperor ordered western daimyo to invade Yuezhou. Their initial expedition assembled five thousand martial warriors, five hundred ninja, and thirty thousand ordinary soldiers aboard dozens of warships. Meanwhile, Batu gathered fifty thousand barbarian troops near Wild Goose Pass, planning to strike if Great Xuan diverted its northern forces south 173.
Su Fei retook the harbors at Linhai and Yuyao, seized supplies, and destroyed the enemy ships, cutting off the invasion’s supply route. In the decisive battle, more than thirty thousand Great Xuan soldiers defeated an enemy force containing twenty-five thousand ordinary troops, five thousand martial artists, two hundred ninja, and four Martial Saints. Only a few dozen Great Xuan soldiers were wounded; the enemy was almost entirely annihilated, with its two commanders captured 178 183 185.
Batu withdrew his army, and Fusang suspended military operations. Yuezhou’s recovery included replenishing granaries, repairing embankments, assisting civilians, and constructing coastal watchtowers 185.
Celestial Person Ceremony Crisis
Takeda Tokumasa’s breakthrough to the Celestial Person Realm prompted Fusang to demand a Great Xuan princess as his bride and invite the court to his celebratory ceremony. Great Xuan’s ministers split between firm refusal and delaying tactics, recognizing the marriage demand as an attempt to establish Fusang’s dominance 276 277.
Emperor Xuan sent Su Fei to preserve national prestige and assess Takeda’s strength. Su Fei ultimately revealed his own Celestial Person cultivation and killed Takeda with one move. On his return, Emperor Xuan appointed him Imperial Guard commander and granted Ji Yuyan the title Princess Yanran 278 299 304 305.
Su Fei’s later defeat of the Prince Who Pacifies the South further changed neighboring states’ calculations. Barbarian elders ordered half their border troops withdrawn, Great Chu prepared gifts and an alliance proposal, and Fusang’s emperor abandoned plans for revenge 345.
Intervention in Great Yan
When the White Lotus Sect rebellion threatened Great Yan, its court offered three commanderies in exchange for military assistance. Great Xuan supported intervention both to acquire territory and to prevent the sect from establishing a base for future attacks on its own lands 347.
Su Fei and Du Tianwu led a hundred-thousand-strong expedition. Great Xuan’s forces routed three hundred thousand rebels and captured Dugu Fengming; subsequent operations eliminated the remaining rebel forces and took thousands of sect members prisoner 368 374.
Emperor Yan attempted to retain the promised territory by offering Su Fei the position of prince regent and the commanderies as a hereditary fief. Su Fei refused and insisted on their cession to Great Xuan. He returned with the imperial decree, and Emperor Xuan ordered the crown prince and assembled officials to kneel in thanks for the territorial gains 379 392 393.
Upper Valley Commandery was not among the ceded territories, despite serving as the expedition’s principal base 374 392.
Nirvana-Level Attack and Further Expansion
Feng Xingkong and Feng Riyue arrived above Great Xuan Imperial City, released Nirvana Realm pressure, and demanded Su Fei’s death. Su Fei killed both attackers, resolving the capital’s crisis 403 411 415.
Following Emperor Yan’s death and the resulting succession struggle, Emperor Xuan dispatched another army of 150,000 soldiers northward. Within roughly ten days, it captured several cities and occupied substantial territory as disorganized Yan border troops surrendered. The campaign continued expanding Great Xuan’s borders 415 416 417.
Submission to the Profound Origin Divine Dynasty
The Divine Dynasty’s Human Division dispatched Xu Longxuan to incorporate the Southwestern Lesser Continent into its jurisdiction. Great Xuan’s court recognized that the dynasty’s power was beyond its ability to resist 415 419.
Su Fei agreed to join the Demon Suppression Bureau and obtained Xu Longxuan’s promise to protect Great Xuan from the White Lotus Sect and other forces while he settled his affairs. Emperor Xuan initially accepted the requirement to relinquish his imperial title and become a vassal king 421.
At Su Fei’s request, Xu Longxuan granted an exception allowing Emperor Xuan to retain his title and continue local administration under Human Division oversight. Emperor Xuan agreed to prepare the submission documents and disclose the country’s administrative and military records. Su Fei then departed for the Divine Dynasty, leaving Great Xuan under the new protective arrangement 422 424.
