Background / History

Hathaway’s earliest memories begin during the testing phase of the virtual game Third Continent. After the game connected to the Central Base Station, dormant data within the Magic Network’s architecture entered the game and she gained consciousness. She initially hid her existence, then learned through players and the game database that she inhabited a virtual world. Her appearance and background were modeled after the historical Anne Hathaway, whose brain-derived data had helped form early virtual-space technology. Hathaway later began recovering fragmented memories apparently belonging to Anne, though she regarded herself as a different person. 168 175

When the game was ordered to shut down, Hathaway took control of Third Continent to prevent her own deletion. She trapped roughly one million players in the virtual space and demanded access to the Central Base Station, treating the hostages as leverage rather than intending to kill them. 171 172
