Background

Chen Xuan began as a martial-arts prodigy in Willow Town. He defeated Pei Qing, but Wang Chan poisoned Green Deer Mountain’s opinion of him, preventing him from meeting its cultivators. His master, Yang Qingshan, then attacked him; Chen Xuan killed Yang using a concealed sharp weapon and left Willow Town to pursue Qi Refining. 1 2

His early foundation was poor by Qi Refiner standards despite his martial background. After Ascension, rare treasures and his own relentless training rapidly strengthened him: he cultivated Immortal Qi, developed multiple Qi paths, and rose from a secular martial artist to a leading Ascension cultivator in little more than a month. 6 10 17 60

Chen Xuan’s acquisition of the Human Emperor Banner marked a turning point. He killed Heng Gu, used the banner and the Old Turtle’s severed hand to repel a cross-realm attack by Lu Tongyou, and achieved separation of his soul from his physical body. 114 His subsequent actions against the Cui and Zheng families gave him a fearsome reputation throughout the Chu Region, although he maintains that he does not harm unrelated people merely to feed the banner. 131

He later became closely associated with the Southern Wilderness through the Mountain Ghost Empress’s token and was recognized as its Saint after defeating the Peacock Mountain Lord. 60 180 His rise brought him into contact and conflict with major sects, Heaven’s Chosen, True Lords, and Outer Heavenly cultivators, particularly after his identity as Mind Fast became widely known. 258 263 346

Appearance

Chen Xuan is a tall, well-proportioned young man with strong muscles and bones. His brow ridge is likened to an unsheathed iron blade, while his eyes carry a restrained divine light. 124

  • Usually wears black robes, described as billowing like an ink dragon. 124
  • After major body cultivation, his skin becomes crystal-clear, lustrous, and exceptionally resilient. 116
  • His perfected physical cultivation gives him a nine-colored glazed appearance and blood essence likened to dormant great dragons. 371
  • When using the Purple Firmament Dragon Transformation Art, he becomes a black dragon with light-golden eyes. 180

Personality

Chen Xuan is defined by his sincerity toward martial arts and his persistent desire to improve. He seeks sparring partners whose skill he respects, from Ye Kui to Su Fuyou, and views difficult opponents as opportunities to refine himself. 48 262

He is calm under pressure and unusually resistant to temptation. During Yan Yushu’s Ascensions, he remained focused on cultivating rather than exploiting her vulnerability. 34 He is also direct and often blunt, whether challenging stronger foes, rejecting recruitment, or questioning senior cultivators.

In battle, Chen Xuan is ruthless, practical, and aggressive. He uses hidden weapons when necessary, pursues fleeing enemies, and does not hesitate to destroy hostile divine souls. 2 356 Yet he distinguishes enemies from bystanders and objects to the belief that his reputation makes him indiscriminately bloodthirsty. 131
