Background / History
Rin’s Rescue and Presumed Death
During the Third Shinobi World War, Obito argues with Kakashi over rescuing their captured teammate, Nohara Rin, and sets out alone. Iwagakure ninja ambush him, and Kakashi loses his left eye while intervening. Obito awakens his Two-Tomoe Sharingan, while Daiki independently frees Rin and kills Taiseki. Obito then rushes into the cave, which collapses 31.
Crushed beneath a boulder, Obito asks Rin to transplant his remaining Sharingan into Kakashi. His teammates leave believing he has died. Minato later treats his death as a consequence of splitting their team to improve mission efficiency 32 82.
Madara’s Successor
Madara secretly saves Obito and reconstructs his damaged body. Initially, Obito concentrates on recovering so that he can return to Konoha and surprise Kakashi and Rin. Madara, whose own health is failing, instead intends to make him a successor capable of continuing his plan and eventually reviving him 47 208.
Madara exploits Obito’s feelings for Rin and personally orchestrates the circumstances leading to her death. Kirigakure seals the Three-Tails inside Rin, intending to release it after she returns to Konoha. To prevent that attack, Rin deliberately dies by Kakashi’s Lightning Cutter. Witnessing her death destroys Obito’s desire to return home 48 98 165.
Before dying, Madara entrusts Obito with his secrets, name, leadership of Akatsuki, and the Moon Eye Plan. Obito accepts the Infinite Tsukuyomi as a means of creating a peaceful world where Rin exists, even though he understands that it would be an illusion rather than a change to reality 98 195.
Akatsuki Operations and Conflict with Daiki
Obito brings Konan and Deva Path Pain to Kirigakure to weaken the village and prepare for future tailed-beast captures. He also seeks revenge for Rin’s death. His plan is to control Fourth Mizukage Karatachi Yagura and use the Blood Mist Policy to persecute talented ninja and provoke internal conflict. Daiki breaks Yagura’s genjutsu and defeats Pain, forcing Obito to withdraw after an unsuccessful recruitment attempt 98 100 103.
Obito subsequently infiltrates Konoha and tries to turn the Three-Tails against the village. Daiki enters the shared Kamui Dimension, attacks his displaced body, and overwhelms him with Wood Style. Obito escapes and takes the Three-Tails after killing its Anbu guards; he later returns to Amegakure with it subdued 105 106 107 109 110 112.
Konoha identifies him when Kakashi displays a Mangekyō pattern identical to the recorded eye of the supposed Madara. Kakashi requests permission to confront his former teammate personally 131.
Nine-Tails Attack and Naruto’s Kidnapping
While Daiki is away, Obito attacks Kushina Uzumaki, extracts the Nine-Tails, and unleashes it on Konoha. Kushina dies, and Obito kidnaps her newborn son, Naruto. Shisui fails to catch him but subsequently breaks his control over the Nine-Tails 157 160.
Obito uses Naruto as leverage to recruit Minato and Kakashi, promising that his plan will restore both Rin and Kushina. Their discussion fails, and Minato rescues Naruto with the Flying Thunder God Technique. Obito then tries to reclaim the Sharingan he gave Kakashi. After escaping the confrontation, he hides in one of Madara’s former underground shelters rather than returning immediately to Akatsuki 164 165 167 168 170.
Abandoning the Moon Eye Plan
Obito later attacks Killer B during Akatsuki’s operation against Kumogakure. When Daiki confronts the organization and calls him by his real name, he denies the identification and threatens war on all fronts 189 194.
Daiki challenges the Moon Eye Plan and offers Obito a path back to Konoha. Obito accepts, but demands proof of Black Zetsu’s deception and an explanation for Daiki’s willingness to forgive him. He then restrains and interrogates Black Zetsu, entering his mental world alongside Daiki 195 198 201 202.
Black Zetsu’s memories reveal that he altered the Uchiha shrine’s stone tablet to mislead Madara and advance Kaguya’s resurrection. Obito abandons his fantasy of peace through Infinite Tsukuyomi and begins considering how to defend humanity alongside Daiki 204 205.
Return to Konoha and Rin’s Restoration
After witnessing Yahiko’s resurrection, Obito asks Daiki to revive Rin. He is willing to meet her even as a disembodied soul, but Daiki explains that she needs a physical vessel. This leads them to seek Orochimaru’s Impure World Reincarnation technique as a possible replacement for her decayed body 209 210.
Obito returns to Konoha under Daiki’s leadership. The revived Kushina initially attacks him, but he apologizes, admits that he was misled, and receives her forgiveness. Daiki then takes Obito and Kakashi to Rin’s grave. By his later confrontation with Madara, Obito confirms that Rin has returned to his side 215 216 249.
Defending Konoha
Obito participates in rebuilding efforts and volunteers to defend Konoha when Madara attacks. Fugaku explicitly accepts him as a companion, which reassures him after his earlier crimes. Drawing on his time with Madara, Obito recommends consulting Orochimaru about the enemy’s apparent resurrection 233 247.
He refuses Madara’s invitation to pursue immortality, declaring that the present world is already worth preserving. During the battle, he uses Kamui to evade attacks and supports Fugaku. Madara takes Obito’s transplanted left eye from Kakashi, enters the Kamui Dimension, and attacks the body hidden there. Obito is severely wounded and pinned down with Chakra Black Rods 249 250 251 252.
Still bandaged afterward, Obito suggests that the missing Daiki may be trapped in another dimension. Once contact is established, he asks whether space-time ninjutsu could bypass the seal. He later requests help restoring the jinchūriki killed by Madara and remains among Konoha’s assembled leaders when Aoshiki arrives 290 291 300 339.
Appearance
- Vortex mask — conceals his identity during Akatsuki operations 100 106.
- Black cloak with red clouds — worn when approaching the Three-Tails outside Konoha 106.
- Mangekyō pattern — described as an inverted sickle; identical to the pattern in the eye transplanted into Kakashi 111 131.
- False face — uses Transformation Jutsu to resemble a young Madara when removing his mask before Daiki 100.
- Recognizable adult features — Kushina recognizes him despite his increased height and older appearance 216.
- Post-battle bandages — remains visibly injured following Madara’s attack 290 291.
Personality
Obito initially places enormous importance on his teammates. He risks acting alone to save Rin, gives Kakashi his Sharingan when he believes he is dying, and eagerly anticipates returning to both friends during his recovery. His affection for Rin also makes him vulnerable to Madara’s manipulation 31 32 47 48.
After Rin’s death, his grief becomes hatred toward Kirigakure, Konoha, and the people responsible for war. He presents his actions as a pursuit of universal peace, but his central desire is to live with Rin again. This conviction drives him to threaten an infant and contemplate another war to obstruct Daiki 98 109 165 194.
Despite periods of overconfidence, he can recognize an unfavorable battle and retreat. Following Black Zetsu’s exposure, he becomes remorseful, accepts responsibility, and renews his concern for his companions. He also accepts that a restored Rin might choose Kakashi rather than him 100 168 205 213 216 251.

Trivia
- His matching Mangekyō pattern, rather than his face, provides Konoha with decisive evidence of his identity 131.
- The scene in which he acquires Nagato’s Rinnegan and becomes the Ten-Tails’ jinchūriki is something Daiki shows him—not a documented advancement of Obito in the supplied storyline 196.
- After returning to Konoha, he continues to regard the left Sharingan as Kakashi’s gift rather than reclaiming it 251.
