Presence sensing

Observation Haki lets a user sense other people's presence, including their number and location beyond ordinary sight. It can also sharpen perception enough to detect a hidden animal or track a presence through an obstruction 66 165 603.

• Issho, despite being blind, uses it to judge Kuma's power 244.
• Marines use it to detect survivors beneath rubble 961.
• Detection is not infallible: Lafitte cannot sense Perona's ghosts, while CP0 agents struggle to pinpoint Maud even though they detect his aura 262 733.

Anticipating attacks

Observation Haki helps users read movement and predict an opponent's actions. Saul considers it essential for a sniper seeking true strength 19 66.

• Maud tracks bullets well enough to catch them and sees through deceptive saber afterimages 146 157.
• He follows Kuro's Silent Step, then uses Observation Haki to support his own use of the technique 167 180.
• Aokiji pairs it with elementalization to evade attacks, provided he can transform quickly enough 122.

Future sight

At an exceptionally high level, Observation Haki can reveal what will be seen and heard in the next few seconds. Katakuri uses this to anticipate attacks and counter Maud's movements 649.

• Seeing an outcome does not guarantee the user can change it. Maud's continuous shadow projectiles overwhelm Katakuri's ability to respond to the future he foresaw 652.

Combination with other abilities

• Gion's Aroma-Aroma Fruit: Its fragrance enhances her Observation Haki during training; a calming fragrance also helps her maintain the emotional stability needed to use it 116 311.
• Enel's Lightning-Lightning Fruit: Combined with Observation Haki, it produces Mantra, which detects presences across an island and hears people's thoughts 783.
• Violet's Glare-Glare Fruit: Her newly awakened Observation Haki combines with the fruit to locate a target from a mental image and provide a clear view without blind spots 783.

Training & Limitations

• Observation Haki depends heavily on aptitude. Saul brings out Maud's and Sunny's abilities through guided training with live lead shot; he expects further improvement to come through time and combat 87 90.
• Using it drains mental energy and can impair concentration. Even Katakuri cannot maintain high-level use continuously 90 642.
• Agitation, loss of composure or overwhelming pain can interrupt it. Maud exploits this weakness against Katakuri, while the Five Elders struggle to maintain theirs after a severe shock 311 649 942.
