Background

Maud transmigrated into the body of a frail, black-haired teenage boy whose merchant family had been massacred by pirates. The boy had been sold onto a slaver ship after the attack, while Maud inherited both the body and its traumatic residual memories. His own Hunter's Notebook ability survived the transmigration, though its accumulated records had reset completely. 1

He introduced himself as Bagard Maud after being taken in by Saul and Sunny at their weapons shop in Mad Hatter Town. Sunny advised him to discard identifying evidence and adopt an alias, while Saul was impressed by Maud's composure under pressure. 2 3

Maud quickly adapted the Hunter's Notebook to the new world's power system. Rather than pursue his former Nen-related requirements, he began recording targets for physique, swordsmanship, Haki, and Devil Fruit experience. His first hunt, Evan Watt, confirmed that the notebook could once again convert prepared intelligence and completed hunts into physical growth. 1 4

Appearance

Maud initially appeared as a pale, wounded boy of about fifteen or sixteen, with bloodstained bandages around his forehead and a body weakened by captivity. His later growth through the Hunter's Notebook transformed him into a tall, imposing man; he can normally return his body to a roughly three-meter-tall form and alter his proportions further through shadow manipulation. 1 569

  • Neat, short black hair. 558
  • Angular facial features and a sharp, heroic bearing. 558
  • Commonly wears black clothing and carries a long saber in a black scabbard with red patterns. 558
  • Often travels with Belly, a white weasel, perched on his shoulder. 558
  • Can enlarge, shrink, lengthen, or otherwise adjust his body after reaching nine-star Physique. 569

Personality

Maud is pragmatic, calm, and relentlessly focused on survival and self-improvement. He treats hunting as a calculated process: gathering intelligence, identifying useful targets, extracting information, and converting the resulting rewards into strength. He is willing to kill surrendered enemies, buy captive pirate captains solely to harvest experience, and exploit a lawless environment when it serves his goals. 82 199 303

Despite this ruthlessness, Maud draws a clear distinction between oppressors and victims. He repeatedly frees slaves, kills human traffickers, aids Fish-Man Island, and supports Sunny's goal of ending slave trading. His compassion is usually expressed through direct action rather than sentimentality. 161 555 566 920

He is also observant and adaptable. He recognizes enemies' weaknesses in battle, develops new uses for his abilities through experimentation, and prefers efficient solutions over prideful confrontations. 42 221 569

Abilities & Skills

Hunter's Notebook

A growth-type ability Maud developed before transmigrating. It turns intelligence and completed hunts into improvements in selected requirements. Its original records were erased after his arrival in the pirate world. 1

  • Requires five stages: setting requirements, locating a target, preparing for the hunt, completing the action, and harvesting results. 1
  • Can use universal requirements such as Physique, Saber Arts, Haki, and Devil Fruit experience. 1
  • Rewards are represented through stars and Star Frames; high-quality targets provide substantial increases. 159
  • After all four primary requirements reach nine stars, it gains the ability to display a target's highest ability rating. 603
  • Maud can hide the displayed ratings at will. 603

Haki

Maud possesses Observation, Armament, and Conqueror's Haki.

  • Observation Haki / Heartbeat Listening — A precognitive perception method that lets him read movements through heartbeats; it enables evasive reactions even before he formally studies Haki. 19 42
  • Armament Haki — Maud unexpectedly demonstrates usable Armament Haki early in his development and later employs it in lethal close combat. 92 221
  • Conqueror's Haki — He can incapacitate large groups with his aura, including thousands of bounty hunters, and clash with high-level opponents through black-and-red lightning. 281 602 944

Gunmanship and Marksmanship

Initially trained under Saul, Maud uses firearms alongside his swordsmanship and develops into a long-range combatant.

  • Uses precise sniper fire to support allies from afar, including Vivi during the Alabasta conflict. 390
  • Combines gunfire with mobility techniques such as Geppo. 293
  • Inherits Saul's Ghost Gun epithet as his adopted son. 138

Saber Arts

Maud's swordsmanship originates from extensive training before his arrival in this world and develops rapidly through targeted hunts. 19 75

  • Uses a firearm in one hand and a saber in the other when fighting large groups. 216
  • Developed the Hidden Blade Style: Pinwheel by Chapter 159. 159
  • Learns and refines Hagoku, eventually controlling its range and power consumption well enough to break Doruy's sword. 345
  • Can unleash large-scale sword energy attacks capable of clearing dozens of foes. 306
  • Uses Black Dragon Manifestation as an all-or-nothing finishing technique against Imu. 951 952

Shadow-Shadow Fruit

Maud uses the Shadow-Shadow Fruit as a flexible combat, movement, enhancement, and support ability rather than merely building a zombie army. 264 361

  • Shadow Stream Bullets — Fires shadow-based projectiles while fighting at range. 293
  • Shadow Style / Shadow Condensation — Alters his shadow's form and synchronizes its changes with his body, increasing size and strength at the cost of temporarily sealing certain shadow techniques. 414
  • Shadow Surgery — Manipulates a target through their shadow, including controlling extracted heart-shadows. 548
  • Shadow Kingdom — Controls a wide area of shadows and redirects massive debris against enemy forces. 668
  • Shadow Grant — Divides portions of his power among allies, dramatically enhancing their combat ability. 906 907
  • Awakened repair — Restores wounds by repairing a person's shadow, but consumes the recipient's lifespan. 489
  • Super regeneration — Can rapidly heal otherwise fatal injuries by using shadow-based restoration. 482 944

Acquired Devil Fruit Powers

Maud accumulates and employs several Devil Fruit abilities in addition to the Shadow-Shadow Fruit.

  • Tremor-Tremor Fruit — Obtained after Whitebeard's death; Maud eventually reaches mastery comparable to Whitebeard in his prime. 482 874
  • Sound-Sound Fruit — Considered for constructing sound bombs with an Empty Shell. 548
  • Azure Dragon Fruit — Grants lightning-based attacks used to cover allies escaping the Holy Land. 839

Physical Transformation

At nine-star Physique, Maud gains fine control over his own dimensions and physical structure. 567 569

  • Can change height, muscle mass, limb length, and body thickness. 569
  • Can use sudden changes in size to evade attacks or strike around an opponent's weapon. 569
  • His ten-star Physique exceeds the physical strength of several world-class fighters. 874

Geppo

Maud learned Geppo through sustained cliff-jumping practice under Saul's training, with Lafitte repeatedly returning him to the starting point. 135 137

  • Practices mid-air direction changes and movement from a standstill. 137
  • Masters the technique after five months of training. 139

Equipment

  • Hunter's Notebook — Maud's materialized growth ability and intelligence record. 1
  • Dark Raven — A long saber purchased from Tatam for 400,000 Belly. 51
  • Chidori — A saber used throughout Maud's early pirate career. 132 156
  • Shusui — A black blade used in high-level combat, including clashes against Kaido and the defeat of the White Whale Pirates' leaders. 626 293
  • Belly — A white-weasel companion capable of transforming into a sword and returning to Maud's hand. 264
  • Pure Gold — Maud uses Pure Gold to offset the lifespan costs associated with extreme ability use. 923

Relationships

  • Saul — Adoptive father, firearms mentor, and former holder of the Ghost Gun epithet; Maud inherits Saul's title with Saul's emotional approval. 19 138
  • Sunny — Maud's family and longtime companion from the weapons shop. He supports her decision to join the Revolutionary Army, then later asks her to leave it so he can help fulfill her dream himself. 138 920
  • Lafitte — Trusted core crewmate who trains with Maud, extracts intelligence through hypnosis, and assists in numerous hunts. 136 159 567
  • Trafalgar Law — Ally and crewmate whose Ope Ope Fruit complements Maud's operations. Law saves Maud at Marineford, later receives shadow-based healing from him, and assists with Devil Fruit extraction. 482 489 567
  • Belly — Maud's white-weasel companion and living weapon. Maud names Belly the “White Weasel.” 138 264
  • Jaya — Core crewmate who trains under Maud's direction and receives power through Shadow Grant. 554 907
  • Usopp — Student whom Maud personally trains in physical conditioning and the principles of Observation Haki. 168

  • Bagard Moyu — Maud's younger biological brother, believed dead until the World Government uses him as a hostage. 637 913
  • Boa Hancock — A close companion openly infatuated with Maud; she becomes jealous upon learning Sunny is “family” to him. 729
