Background
Gelo is the second of five sons of the previous King of the Emerald Kingdom. He was sixteen when he first met Richard. His eldest brother, the Crown Prince, succeeded their father as King; Gelo feared the new King viewed him and the other unlanded princes as threats. He initially left the royal capital on a hunting trip to escape that danger temporarily. 57
Believing that only the strength of a Wizard could secure his survival, Gelo sought instruction from Richard. Richard could not teach him spells, but agreed to provide Ether in return for 10,000 pounds of high-quality iron. 58 Gelo later used his royal status to help Richard acquire materials, including a large ruby and access to the kingdom-controlled glass factory. 116 121 122
His Wizard talent was assessed by White Stone Tower as low-grade and “not much different from having no talent at all.” 133 Nevertheless, he continued pursuing Wizardry. He obtained an Exemption Certificate for White Stone Tower’s ship, but it was stolen and replaced with a gold coin before he could board; Gelo suspected the Pombo Family’s involvement. 148 149 151 He subsequently studied at White Stone Tower Academy, where persistent effort allowed him to become a qualified First Level Apprentice. 235 339
Personality
Gelo is ambitious but frequently uncertain about the costs of ambition. His initial pursuit of Wizardry is driven by fear of royal intrigue and death rather than confidence in his own potential. Even after being told that his talent is poor, he refuses to stop trying. 57 111 133
He is impressionable and sometimes naïve, particularly around Richard’s claims and plans. Richard successfully passes off deionized water as a meditation potion, and Gelo immediately agrees to provide assistance in exchange for it. 116 However, Gelo can be observant: he notices when he and Richard are followed and recognizes people involved in earlier disturbances. 240 339
Gelo is cautious in dangerous situations and readily intimidated by stronger personalities, especially Nancy. His reluctance to take further risks contrasts sharply with Nancy’s desire to travel to the Main Continent and improve herself. 594 695

Story Role / Major Arcs
Black Forest Hunting Party
Gelo meets Richard after Richard and Pandora frighten away a Wild Boar that had charged him. Seeing Richard’s magic changes Gelo’s attitude from nervous suspicion to respectful interest. 56
At a forest banquet, he explains his fear of his eldest brother and asks Richard to teach him magic. Richard instead advises him that returning to the royal capital may be safer than remaining away from it. 57
Gelo is later stabbed in his tent during an apparent assassination attempt. His chainmail reduces the wound to a nonfatal abdominal injury, though blood loss and fear leave him unconscious. 59
Pursuit of Wizardry in Emerald Gold City
Gelo continues meditating despite poor results. Richard secretly assists his first successful out-of-body experience, which leads Gelo to mistakenly believe his talent has awakened. 111 115
Richard uses Gelo’s eagerness by offering “Dihydrogen Monoxide,” actually deionized water, while planning to help Gelo’s astral meditation in return for the prince’s assistance gathering materials. 116
White Stone Tower
Gelo informs Richard of White Stone Tower’s arrival in Emerald Gold City and helps arrange the talent test. The Tower rejects Gelo because of his extremely low talent. 129 133
Despite Richard’s reservations, Gelo chooses the path of Wizardry over governing a dangerous border territory. His certificate is stolen before he can use it to board White Stone Tower’s ship. 148 149 151
At the academy, he studies diligently despite difficulty understanding advanced material and financial strain. Richard offers to help fund his elective studies. 235 239 His persistence eventually brings him to First Level Apprentice status. 339
Later Expeditions and Battles
Gelo joins Richard and Nancy in field work, though he struggles with prolonged magical excavation and is often overshadowed by Nancy’s greater endurance. 596
During the chaotic battle at the Exchange Conference ruins, Gelo is injured by a Black-Robed Man and rescued by Richard using a White Jade Shard. 613
Later, he serves primarily as a support caster against strange creatures, enhancing Annie and Nancy or repelling attackers rather than fighting on the front line. 1257
Trivia
- Gelo was sixteen years old when he described his family situation to Richard. 57
- He originally wore ornate princely clothing, but changed into a simple black noble hunting outfit when attempting to leave for White Stone Tower. 149
- Richard’s early assessment that Gelo’s astral perception was unusually poor was later revised: most Wizard Apprentices and Wizards meditate in a similarly externally unaware state. 173
- Old Malun’s claim that Gelo stole the Crystal Skull is an accusation, not independently confirmed in the provided account. 202
