Yu Xiaogang was the youngest son of Yu Yuanzhen, leader of the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan. His mutated martial soul, Luo San Pao, and poor cultivation talent left him unable to advance beyond Level 29 for decades; he turned to Spirit Theory in pursuit of recognition and a way to restore Luo San Pao to a dragon-type martial soul 9 25 183.

At Nuoding Academy, Yu Xiaogang sought Blue Silver Grass data from Ye Yu, who possessed Innate Level 1 Soul Power. He demanded extensive personal and martial-soul information, refused Ye Yu access to his books and notes, and later pressed him to disclose the reason for his unusually rapid cultivation 5 7. He cited his Ten Core Competencies of Martial Soul and Spirit Ring Absorption Limit Theory while urging Ye Yu to share his method for the benefit of commoner Soul Masters 8.

After learning that Tang San possessed Blue Silver Grass and Innate Full Soul Power, Yu Xiaogang intervened during Tang San's enrollment at Nuoding Academy and took him as a disciple 11. He later accompanied Tang San to the Soul Hunting Forest and became Tang San's principal teacher.

Yu Xiaogang arrived at Shrek Academy after Tang San's encounter with the Titan Giant Ape and Man Faced Demon Spider. He identified Tang San's newly acquired Eight Spider Lances as an External Soul Bone and introduced a demanding group-training regimen for the Shrek students 101 102. His credibility was publicly challenged when Ye Yu revealed their earlier history at Nuoding Academy and questioned the basis of Yu Xiaogang's teachings 104.

After Ye Yu's martial soul evolution was confirmed, Yu Xiaogang repeatedly attempted to acquire its secret. He offered his research notes, the friendship of the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan, and appeals to the welfare of commoner Soul Masters, but Ye Yu rejected him and physically humiliated him on multiple occasions 106 112 113.

Yu Xiaogang was later abducted by the Perverted Trio at Ye Yu's direction. Tang San escaped to seek help, while Yu Xiaogang was held for nearly a month and returned to Shrek Academy severely weakened 119 128. Ye Yu subsequently used the incident to coerce Yu Xiaogang into repeatedly summoning Luo San Pao for devouring 173.

When Yu Xiaogang tried to travel to Spirit City, Ye Yu intercepted and abducted him. Ye Yu implanted Demon Willow Fluff into his body, using its restorative effects to make Luo San Pao available for devouring up to several times daily 182 183 184. After Yu Xiaogang's cooperation enabled the Blue Silver Spirit Jade Tree to materialize and develop intelligence, Ye Yu released him and honored his promise to evolve Luo San Pao 263 264.

Immediately after the partial evolution, Ye Yu drained Yu Xiaogang's strength, revealed that he had destroyed the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan, and used the parasitic Demon Willow Fluff to consume Yu Xiaogang's flesh and blood. Yu Xiaogang died and his remains were burned 265.

Yu Xiaogang was a middle-aged man with a stiff expression, close-cropped black hair, and heavy stubble covering his cheeks and chin. He commonly wore a black scholar's robe and carried himself with a detached, formal bearing 5 7.

Personality

Yu Xiaogang was deeply insecure about his failed cultivation and Luo San Pao's mutation, but projected confidence through his identity as the “Great Master” of Spirit Theory. He took pride in his theories and was sensitive when others questioned their validity or compared him unfavorably to Ye Yu 8 104 108.

He was persistent in pursuing martial soul evolution, often framing requests for Ye Yu's knowledge as service to commoner Soul Masters while seeking personal benefit. Once Ye Yu's achievements became undeniable, Yu Xiaogang's resentment shifted into envy and an obsessive desire to obtain Ye Yu's methods 112 113 136 167.

Despite this, Yu Xiaogang cared strongly for Tang San and took genuine pride in his disciple's progress. Tang San likewise regarded him as a teacher and father figure 101 119.

Conflict with Ye Yu

Yu Xiaogang cannot accept Ye Yu's Blue Silver Grass evolution and later attempts to gain its method through flattery, offers, and moral appeals. His failures culminate in public humiliation and repeated beatings by Ye Yu 104 106 112 113.

Captivity and Exploitation

Evolution and Death
