Dumbledore's Trap

The boisterous students dispersed. News of the Moon and the Moon Branch instantly eclipsed everything else as the hottest topic of the moment. The students did not even have time to discuss something as outrageous as Taylor's temporary appointment as Vice Principal.

Moon Voyage, Moon Astronomy Course, Moon Settlement—these ordinary words became extraordinary the moment they were connected to the Moon.

After the crowded throng had dispersed, Professor McGonagall came over to Dumbledore. She hesitated, then finally asked in a low voice.

"Albus, why is it like this?"

"Like this? Ah, I have always felt that Taylor had matured enough to take on some necessary responsibilities."

Dumbledore answered with a smile, as though everything was well in hand.

"I am not referring to the position. I mean the arrangement."

Professor McGonagall shook her head slightly, her gaze sharp. "Although it was somewhat abrupt, there is no doubt that he can handle it, and that he can bear this responsibility. But I do not understand why he is going himself while you are not over there overseeing the construction and exploration. You have been interested in that place from the very beginning."

Dumbledore looked back at Professor McGonagall. His excellent partner of so many years no longer wore her former unconcerned attitude. Her expression was resolute, as if she would not rest until she had an answer.

After a brief silence, Dumbledore shook his head slightly. "That place may be harsher, but it is safer. I am staying here because there are things I must do."

"Things you must do?"

"That is all I can tell you, Minerva. Taylor is absolutely safe on the Moon. Even if something happens here, it will not involve him."

Dumbledore shook his head and fell silent, unwilling to reveal any more.
