History
Hogwarts was established by the Four Founders. Its Book of Admittance and Quill of Acceptance have governed admission since the school’s founding 3. After Slytherin left, Hogwarts ceased openly teaching Dark Magic, while maintaining a tradition of instruction against Dark wizards 283.
School discipline was once far harsher. Records from Dumbledore’s student years describe punishments involving whips, ropes, and clubs; older rules were still being phased out after he became headmaster 369.
Admission and Sorting
- Admission — The Quill of Acceptance checks children in the British wizarding world until they turn twelve. The Book of Admittance permits a name to be recorded only after the child shows sufficient magical talent; Hogwarts does not admit children absent from the book 3.
- Acceptance letters — Eligible children ordinarily receive a letter. A professor visits children from Muggle families to guide them 3.
- Sorting Ceremony — The Sorting Hat assigns incoming students to houses. McGonagall explains that the ceremony’s fear, uncertainty, Hat, and audience form an ancient ritual that turns some of a student’s unstable excess magic into lasting protection 327 497.
Castle and Grounds
- Protective magic — Generations of headmasters have added spells to Hogwarts’s defenses. Much of that magic is tied to the office of headmaster; Dumbledore describes the castle as “almost half alive,” without establishing that it is sentient 590 640.
- Library — The library supports student research and later gains Muggle-style electric lighting, allowing an additional hour of evening reading 24 242.
- Black Lake and Forbidden Forest — Both lie on the school’s grounds. Repairs to pits in the forest bring students into a disputed boundary area claimed by centaurs 45 254.
- Greenhouses — A new Herbology greenhouse is built through a project involving professors, Hagrid, and student administrators. Its plans also incorporate defensive protections 130 134.
- Hogsmeade access — Students use Hogsmeade for breaks and school travel; older students have a route back to Hogwarts from the village 129 475.
Administration and School Life
Dumbledore is headmaster, while McGonagall handles substantial day-to-day administration. During busy periods, Andrew Taylor and other students assist with paperwork, repairs, examinations, and visiting examiners 74 110 112.
The school’s safeguards do not always prevent misconduct: Fred and George Weasley enter Dumbledore’s office and take the Sorting Hat after it agrees to accompany them. The Hat returns, and the twins receive detention 203 204 206.
Moon Branch
Following a successful lunar expedition, Dumbledore announces plans for a new Hogwarts campus. The planners agree that its Quidditch pitch will be on the lunar surface, while other facilities depend on available heating and magical support 696 697. The Board of Governors later appoints Andrew Taylor vice principal of the Hogwarts Moon Branch and allocates, with the Ministry of Magic, three million Galleons toward residential and campus construction 705.
