Background / History

Richard Knight acquired the neglected Morro Bay Town near the Southern California–Northern Baja border to realize his vision of a clean, safe city free from crime, poverty, and disorder. Through Knight International, he attracted corporate investors with tax incentives and established the foundation for a future corporate population. 270

Though geographically located on the mainland of New America, Night City broke away from California and New America’s legal control. It functions as an independent metropolis, but corporations—not a national government—hold its real power. 15

New America later attempted to conquer the city. Mayor Ryan’s resistance, supported by an Arasaka aircraft carrier, repelled the invasion and preserved Night City’s independence. 24 Arasaka was subsequently allowed back into the city because of political changes, despite having previously been driven out. 206

Districts and Landmarks

Corporate Rule and Inequality

Night City’s wealthy can replace damaged organs with new ones, while poorer residents often lack access to reliable healthcare, education, and opportunities to escape poverty. 15 18

Workers can be forced into cybernetic debt merely to retain employment. Zeta Tech required workers to finance replacement mechanical limbs through loans deducted from their wages; when New America Auto later went bankrupt, many were left unemployed but still indebted. 102

• Mayor Ryan’s administration was accused of accepting corporate money and had lost public support before New America helped sustain his position. 23

Cyberware

Cybernetic augmentation is widespread enough that living without neural slots or a cyberbrain is considered highly inconvenient for most residents. 306

• Cheap, counterfeit, second-hand, or scavenged implants can cause rejection, tissue damage, psychological changes, neural complications, and cyberpsychosis. 64

Cyberpsychosis

Cyberpsychosis is not presented solely as a consequence of having many implants. It is linked to dehumanization, alienation, loss of empathy, and the psychological effects of modern life, with cyberware acting as a catalyst. 104

The condition disproportionately affects lower-tier mercenaries, guards, and heavily indebted workers who lack quality cyberware and medical support. Once a victim becomes fully psychotic, there is no known cure. 64 104

The Old Net and Rogue AIs

The Old Net—also called the Deep Web—is a dangerous cyberspace wasteland populated by rogue AIs. NetWatch erected the Black Wall to contain them. 38 225

A breach of the Black Wall could devastate Night City because its residents, homes, infrastructure, and cyberbrains are deeply connected to digital systems. 210 The Voodoo Boys’ attempts to capture rogue AIs and cross the Black Wall consequently became a major threat to the city. 350 356
