Night had fallen, and a restaurant in Saint-Étienne was packed with customers. Waiters constantly weaved between the tables.

Almost every table had the day's spoils beside it, ranging from palm-sized boxes to full-sized flying brooms.

By the bright candlelight, Charles sampled Saint-Étienne's local rose sausage. The sausage had an even ratio of fat to lean meat, and when sliced into rounds, its red-and-white pattern looked just like a rose.
