Background / History

Charles was raised by Jack Smith, who found him as a child and later became his grandfather figure and magical mentor. Before entering the wizarding world, Charles was a top student at Dragon Primary School in Oxfordshire. He had also survived a kidnapping during a school trip, killing one kidnapper while escaping. 2 31

Albus Dumbledore visited the Smith home to reveal that Charles was a wizard and invite him to Hogwarts. Though initially wary of Dumbledore, Charles chose to attend. Jack immediately took him to a secluded seaside villa for defensive training, believing Hogwarts to be dangerous. 2

Before Hogwarts, Jack drilled Charles in combat-oriented spellwork, including Levitation, Stunning, Summoning, and projectile attacks. Charles practiced obsessively, developing carpal tunnel syndrome before Jack healed him, and achieved silent casting with a wand despite unconsciously moving his lips. 3 4

At Diagon Alley, Ollivander identified Charles’s wand as the longest made in more than a century: a yew wand with an unusual phoenix-feather core, suited to an owner capable of controlling life and death. 5

Charles was sorted into Gryffindor. His rapid spell acquisition, unusual magical consumption, frequent rule-breaking, and connections to Jack soon made him a subject of interest to Dumbledore, Voldemort, and other Hogwarts figures. 11 15 16

Appearance

Charles is usually identified by his glasses and his conspicuously long wand. He can alter his appearance through Polyjuice Potion, Transfiguration, invisibility magic, and Animagus transformation. 148 170 520

  • Wears glasses; his left hand can be used to compensate for limited vision in duels. 170
  • Carries a distinctive 460 mm wand. 170 698
  • Has transformed into a giant jellyfish Animagus, a giant panda, an owl, and Crookshanks’s form. 163 365 471
  • Can assume the identity of Steve Rogers when acting covertly. 456

Personality

Charles is curious, practical, and relentlessly interested in useful magic. He approaches spells, magical history, creature lore, business, and engineering with the same desire to understand how they work and how they can be improved. He is notably quick to experiment, whether with Portkeys, enchanted tools, automated systems, or spatial magic. 16 226 504

He often appears calm in dangerous or socially tense situations. He intimidated Draco Malfoy on the Hogwarts Express, treated Azkaban’s Dementors with curiosity rather than fear, and negotiated directly with Voldemort when his family’s safety was at stake. 9 206 574

Charles’s kindness is most apparent in how he treats vulnerable groups and friends. He aids the Centaurs against Acromantulas, supports working House-elves, helps Hermione study curse-breaking, and reacts violently when Hermione is harmed. His concern does not prevent him from using manipulation, secrecy, or intimidation when he believes they are necessary. 21 409 529 596
