Background
Hermione knew Charles Smith from primary school, where the two spent six years in academic rivalry before discovering they would attend Hogwarts together. She was delighted to learn that Charles was also magical and expected to be his classmate again 5 17.
At Hogwarts, Hermione quickly became one of Gryffindor’s most accomplished students. Her rapid answers and visible pride initially drew resentment from classmates, but Charles recognized that her confidence partly concealed the caution of an eleven-year-old entering an unfamiliar world 13 17. Her relationship with Ron improved after the troll incident, when both apologized for their earlier behavior toward one another 45.
Her confidence later contributed to a serious mistake: while brewing Polyjuice Potion, she failed to verify that a hair belonged to Millicent Bulstrode and temporarily transformed into a cat-human hybrid. She accepted responsibility for disregarding proper procedure and was treated in the Hospital Wing 186 187 194.
Appearance
Hermione is initially noted for her prominent front teeth, unkempt presentation, and preference for books over dressing up 156 161.
- Her front teeth were accidentally enlarged during a duel with Charles, then shrunk by Madam Pomfrey to a smaller, more flattering size 171.
- During her failed Polyjuice Potion attempt, she developed cat fur, paws, cat-like eyes and ears, and a tail before treatment reversed most of the effects 186 194.
- Her later appearance draws attention from classmates, including foreign students and Farbaton Castle staff 480 529.
Personality
Hermione is intensely curious, competitive, and academically driven. She instinctively raises her hand in class, researches historical mysteries through extensive reading, and takes on workloads that regularly leave her exhausted 13 154 272. She values competence but is capable of recognizing when overconfidence has led her astray, as after the Polyjuice accident 186.
She is also strongly safety-conscious and morally outspoken. Hermione objects to dangerous rule-breaking, illegal underground duels, Dark Magic, and the exploitation of house-elves, even when her stance causes arguments with friends 174 438 644 673. Her concern can become forceful: she repeatedly challenges Ron over the Octagon Cage Duels and confronts Charles when she believes his actions may harm students or compromise the tutoring workshop 644 651.
Despite her seriousness, Hermione is fond of desserts, reacts sharply to Charles’s teasing, and maintains close friendships with Harry, Ron, Ginny, and Charles 37 268 528.
Abilities & Skills
Academic Knowledge and Research
Hermione has exceptional recall, broad magical knowledge, and a habit of verifying information through books.
- Correctly explained the Gentle Breeze Charm’s function, incantation, and wand movement in her first Charms lesson 13.
- Perfectly transfigured a matchstick into a needle when her classmates struggled 17.
- Identified a Heliopath from a specimen and earned Gryffindor points for her explanation 151.
- Conducted research into magical history, pure-blood families, the Gaunts, the Chamber of Secrets, and ancient magical contracts 154 636.
- Identified the Gallery Bridge’s historical period and uncovered a possible route to a concealed stone doorway below it 688.
Spellcasting and Dueling
Hermione learns spells quickly and casts with notable speed, though she is not infallible under pressure.
- Cast the Shield Charm proficiently when asked which spell would best protect someone in the Forbidden Forest 219.
- In her duel with Charles, launched the fastest Knockback Jinx of the evening, though Charles still defeated her before her spell landed 171.
- Produced a two-meter-high wave with the Water-Making Spell while temporarily enhanced by unusual magic 130.
- Her early attempt to cast a fire spell failed during the greenhouse-clearing work, contrasting with Seamus’s uncontrolled but powerful success 26.
- Set fire to Snape’s robes from beneath the Quidditch stands to protect Harry when she believed Snape was sabotaging his broom 47.
Physical Strength and Boxing
Hermione has displayed extraordinary physical power in addition to spellcasting.
- After receiving magic from Charles at Christmas, she temporarily gained enhanced strength and spell power; hair-thin lightning appeared over her skin while using her full strength 130.
- Sent Peeves into a wall hard enough to leave him stuck there “like wallpaper” 332.
- Uprooted the Whomping Willow to protect Harry during a Dementor attack, an act witnessed by Sirius Black 335.
- Received an invitation from a UFC scout to develop her boxing ability in America; Mr. Granger declined because of family obligations 606.
Curse-Breaking
Hermione studies curse-breaking to support Harry and address dangerous magical objects.
- Began learning from Moss Jeff and worked through a curse-breaking text in Charles’s Farbaton Castle office 528.
- Developed a methodical plan to identify the spell on the Golden Egg before attempting to break it 529.
- Her Polyjuice failure demonstrates that theoretical knowledge alone does not compensate for skipped checks or unverified ingredients 186 187.
Teaching and Organization
Hermione turned her academic ability into a student-support project.
- Signed on to lead the Scholastic Progress & Enrichment Workshop, initially believing Charles was offering her an elfish-welfare organization 646.
- Recruited capable students from multiple Houses, including Cedric Diggory, Padma Patil, and Theodore Nott, after Umbridge’s Monthly Exam caused widespread failures 666.
- Oversees tutoring assignments but struggles with the scale of demand and the need to prevent tutor burnout 652 666.
Equipment
- Wand — used for academic spellwork, dueling, defensive magic, and research.
- Crookshanks — her large ginger cat; Hermione uses his fur as material for animal-transfiguration study 296 509.
- Time-Turner — enables her to attend an unusually heavy third-year course schedule and recover study time 294 296.
- Snapping Cabbage bracelet — a Christmas gift from Charles containing hollow gold beads for holding animal fur; intended to support temporary animal transformation 499.
Relationships
- Charles Smith — Primary-school academic rival and long-standing close friend. Charles frequently looks after Hermione’s sleep, safety, and studies, while his teasing and controlling behavior regularly provoke her anger 17 37 272 523.
- Harry Potter — Close friend and fellow investigator. Hermione provides Harry with rational advice, research support, and practical help during crises 177 718.
- Ron Weasley — Close friend whose early rivalry with Hermione developed into mutual trust after the troll incident. Their friendship later becomes strained by Ron’s use of Contract Magic and involvement in underground cage duels 45 642 644.
- Ginny Weasley — Dormmate and friend. Ginny helps supervise Hermione’s sleep schedule and later shares personal conversations with her 272 186.
- Minerva McGonagall — Professor, mentor, and employer. Hermione assists with McGonagall’s Transfiguration textbook and receives compassionate help during her Polyjuice transformation 187 210.
- Crookshanks — Her pet cat and frequent companion; his fur is used in her animal-transfiguration coursework 296 509.
- Viktor Krum — Knows Hermione by name and is later the subject of Ginny’s teasing about his interest in her 445 419.

Hermione establishes herself as Gryffindor’s most academically prepared first-year, competes with Charles in Transfiguration, and gradually forms a closer bond with Harry and Ron after the troll attack 13 17 45.
Chamber of Secrets Incident
She researches Hogwarts history and pure-blood families, investigates clues related to Slytherin’s study, and suffers a failed Polyjuice transformation while pursuing answers. Her recovery does not end her involvement in the Chamber investigation, as she continues working with Harry and Ron 154 177 186 187.
Triwizard Tournament

- Hermione’s fondness for desserts is strong enough that Farbaton Castle staff regularly give her large bags of sweets while she studies there 528 529.
