Background / History
Harry is the only wizard known to have survived the Killing Curse. His parents, Lily and James Potter, were killed by Voldemort while protecting him. He was subsequently raised at Number 4 Privet Drive by the Dursleys. 1 63
The Dursleys’ neighbors, Jack and Charles Smith, were a major presence in his childhood; Harry and Charles had known one another since they were young. Harry also developed boxing skills and unusually sharp reflexes through physical training. 1 11 175 402
At Hogwarts, Harry joins Gryffindor and quickly forms close friendships with Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, and Charles. His first encounters with Draco Malfoy establish a lasting rivalry: Harry rejects Malfoy’s offer of friendship and physically defeats Crabbe and Goyle when they threaten his friends. 8 9 11
Appearance
Harry wears glasses and bears a distinctive scar on his forehead. Remus Lupin notes that Harry strongly resembles James Potter, while his eyes resemble Lily Potter’s. 130 403
- Round glasses that are a recurring vulnerability in duels. 501 579
- Forehead scar associated with his survival of Voldemort’s attack. 63 403
- Resembles his father James, particularly apart from Lily’s eyes. 130
Personality
Harry is direct, courageous, and highly protective of the people around him. He refuses Malfoy’s pure-blood rhetoric, defends Ron, and is willing to fight rather than submit to intimidation. 9
He is also impulsive. When Voldemort reveals himself on Quirrell’s body, Harry attacks before Voldemort can finish speaking, rather than waiting for an explanation. 139
Despite his recklessness, Harry is curious and proactive when faced with mysteries. He investigates his ability to speak with snakes, searches for evidence concerning the Chamber of Secrets, and continues trying to understand his parents’ past. 160 188 201
