Personality

Zhunti is intensely ambitious for the Western Teachings and regards Human Race Destiny, Merit, disciples, and spiritual roots as resources needed to reverse the West's decline. He repeatedly seeks the Human Emperor and Sage Teacher positions, first through direct negotiation and later through proxies, military intervention, and political schemes. 7 24 34 35

He is opportunistic and manipulative. Zhunti attempts to exploit Primordial Lord's former hostility toward the Intercepting Sect, conspires with Haotian to avoid direct responsibility for targeting Shennong's daughter, and amplifies Di Xin's improper thoughts toward Nuwa in an effort to divide Nuwa from the Three Pure Ones. 7 25 66

Although he frequently speaks and acts boldly, his confidence is tempered by repeated defeats. After being pursued and slain by Primordial Lord, Zhunti becomes acutely aware of the gulf between them and often retreats rather than risk another direct confrontation. 57 58 78 80

Zhunti is a Heavenly Dao Saint whose Saintly laws and pressure can overwhelm non-Saints.

Story Role / Major Arcs

• Human Race Sage Teacher dispute: Zhunti proposes allocating three of the eight Sage Teacher positions to the West and tries to encourage Primordial Lord's prejudice against the Intercepting Sect. Primordial Lord instead supports Tongtian, and the Western Teachings receive no share of the positions. 7 9 11 12

• Fuxi and the first clash with the Three Pure Ones: Zhunti and Jieyin deliver Hongjun's order for Fuxi to enter Fire Cloud Cave. Their confrontation with Primordial Lord escalates into a Saint battle, ending in Zhunti's physical body being destroyed and the Two Sages surrendering spiritual roots as compensation. 15 18 20 21

• Schemes for the Human Emperor: After losing access to Human Race Merit, Zhunti allies with Haotian to act against Shennong's lineage and later sends Maitreya and Buddhist Venerables to aid the Jiu Li Tribe against Xuanyuan. 24 25 34 35

• Decline of the Western Teachings: Maitreya's death, Ksitigarbha's loss, and Dingguang Xian's exposure and death repeatedly reduce the Western Teachings' Destiny. Zhunti responds by seeking to sow discord among the Three Pure Ones and reporting their growing unity to Hongjun. 40 42 47 54

• War against the Western Teachings: When the Three Pure Ones attack the West, Primordial Lord personally hunts Zhunti into Chaos and slays him. Hongjun later restores Zhunti, allowing him to reach the Sixth Heaven of Sainthood. 56 57 60

• Buzhou Mountain and the Investiture of the Gods: Zhunti is beaten back while trying to claim the Buzhou Mountain treasure, and the Three Pure Ones' disciples raid the Western Teachings in his absence. He later receives the Investiture of the Gods List and God-Beating Whip from Hongjun, but loses them to the Three Pure Ones. 63 65

• Di Xin scheme and second death: Zhunti engineers Di Xin's blasphemy against Nuwa to fracture Nuwa's alliance with the Three Pure Ones. Primordial Lord retaliates by destroying Zhunti's Primordial Spirit; Zhunti is later revived alongside Jieyin by Hongjun. 66 67 68 70

• Investiture of the Gods Tribulation: Zhunti supports Shang, forms an alliance with Haotian, and backs Western Teachings forces in attacks on Xi Qi. The campaign fails as Primordial Lord and the Three Teachings send numerous Western disciples onto the Investiture of the Gods List. 78 79 80 84 85

• Mystic Gate–Daoist Gate conflict: After the Three Pure Ones leave the Mystic Gate, Zhunti remains with the Mystic Gate and joins its Saints against the newly founded Daoist Gate. He later seeks Primordial Lord's death during the Heavenly Dao's assault on the Daoist Gate. 85 86 90

• Journey to the West era: Zhunti is identified as the figure who suppresses Sun Wukong beneath Five Finger Mountain, binding the monkey's fate to the West. 95
