Background / History

Dian Wei was a wanted man living in the wilderness with his trained tiger, Hu Zi. To support his enormous appetite, he and the tiger intimidated travelers and feigned danger in exchange for food or money. Though hot-tempered and deceptive in this limited scheme, Dian Wei valued his reputation, kept his word, and would not use violence without cause. 600

He encountered Wang Xuan while attempting to obtain Wang's roasted deer. Wang Xuan refused to yield despite Dian Wei's intimidating presence, earning Dian Wei's respect. Their standoff ended in a shared meal, after which Dian Wei accepted Wang Xuan as a brother—initially because of his cooking. 601 602

After revealing that he was wanted by the Imperial Court, Dian Wei accepted Wang Xuan's promise to address the matter once they reached a city. He subsequently joined Wang Xuan's party, served as its foremost martial force, and received the courtesy name Elai. 602 618

Appearance

Dian Wei is an exceptionally large, heavily muscled man, described as nearly two meters tall. His appearance is repeatedly compared to that of a savage beast or demon due to his intimidating build and ferocious features. 600 604

  • Long black hair falling down his back. 600
  • Broad forehead, large nose, pale-purple mouth, and a mouth described as nearly reaching his ears. 600
  • Rough facial flesh and a thick, bristle-like beard. 600
  • Bell-like eyes and shovel-sized hands. 600 604
  • Frequently wears armor and carries twin Iron Halberds in battle. 630 983

Personality

Dian Wei is straightforward, simple-minded, and guided by direct personal values: good food, sound sleep, and worthwhile fights. He is intensely fond of eating, particularly Wang Xuan's cooking, and is willing to go to unusual lengths to obtain food. 600 603 606

Despite his brutal fighting style, Dian Wei is highly chivalrous. He values promises, friendship, and the reputation of a warrior; after Wang Xuan trusted him without demanding an explanation for his wanted status, Dian Wei was deeply moved and answered honestly. 600 602

He is battle-hungry and often enjoys fighting powerful opponents, but he is not incapable of thought. In combat, he can identify openings, recognize an opponent's importance, and employ stratagems when brute force alone is insufficient. 604 639 1041 1042

Abilities & Skills

Monstrous Physical Strength

Dian Wei's defining trait is overwhelming raw strength, even among high-level martial warriors.

  • His footsteps can leave pits in the ground. 600
  • He can kill armored bandits with bare-handed blows and crush through formations while relying only on physical force. 604 605
  • His clash with Zhang Fei created a shockwave that killed soldiers within a twenty-meter radius. 639
  • He severely injured Lu Bu with a single halberd strike and forced him from his horse. 682
  • He shattered reinforced gate bars and pulled open a gate that normally required ten men to move. 946
  • He can breach city walls with a massive iron hammer. 984

Internalized Gang Qi

After studying Zhang Fei's explosive technique, Dian Wei cultivated Gang Qi within his body instead of manifesting it externally.

  • His method was formed through his own experimentation, Zhang Fei's advice, and Wang Xuan's body-refining ideas. 656 683
  • It grants extreme physical defense; ordinary spears cannot scratch him, while arrows penetrate only shallowly before being forced out as the wounds heal. 683 688
  • His recovery and stamina surpass ordinary Gang Qi users, making him difficult to exhaust. 684
  • The method is considered exceptionally dangerous; Lu Bu states that prior practitioners exploded and died, with King Xiang being the sole historical exception. 683

Halberd Combat

Dian Wei primarily fights with twin Iron Halberds, favoring relentless offense and direct clashes.

  • Can wield both halberds one-handed, giving him speed and flexibility against heavier two-handed weapons. 639
  • Uses Ordinary Yet Extraordinary Mountain Splitting Chop, including a dual-halberd version that instantly overwhelmed Ma Chao. 962
  • Throws hand halberds and short spears with enough force to break the sound barrier. 684 947
  • His thrown weapons are less effective against airborne Externalized Qi experts. 684

Battlefield Command and Breakthrough Warfare

Dian Wei specializes in leading heavy infantry through enemy positions and fortifications.

  • Led a thousand heavy infantry trained exclusively in wedge formation; their cloud qi could form a fierce tiger. 747
  • Led charges that overwhelmed Cao Army generals Xiahou Yuan, Cao Ren, and Xu Chu. 833 834
  • Captured checkpoints during the Hanzhong advance with small elite detachments. 945 946
  • Jumped onto a defended city wall and defeated the Externalized Qi warrior Yang Ren in six strikes. 948

Combat Instinct and Tactical Insight

Though impatient with complicated plans, Dian Wei possesses strong instincts for battlefield tactics.

  • Recognized that he could not simultaneously suppress Sun Ce, Han Dang, and Zhu Ran alone, then targeted Sun Ce to force the others to abandon their objective. 1041
  • Exploited Zhu Ran's aerial approach by launching himself from the parapet and killing him in a single decisive attack. 1042
  • Is said to possess an innate ability to see weaknesses in combat. 1041

Limitations

  • Cannot fly after internalizing his Gang Qi, allowing airborne opponents to evade him. 684 1001
  • Cannot use externalized Gang Qi after his conversion; his attacks are primarily physical. 684
  • Can be constrained by agile airborne opponents, as Sun Ce, Han Dang, and Zhu Ran initially exploited this weakness. 1042
  • Heavy full-body armor restricts his movement enough that he may forcibly break out of it in battle. 834
  • External Gang Qi can be suppressed by the cloud qi of disciplined armies; before his conversion, this left him vulnerable to being overwhelmed by elite troops. 619

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Twin Iron Halberds — Dian Wei's primary weapons; stained by prior bloodshed and used for nearly all major duels and battlefield charges. 601 639
  • Hand Halberds — Carried for thrown attacks; can be launched at supersonic speed. 684
  • Short Spears — Used to create climbing points in city walls by embedding them into stone. 947
  • Heavy armor and helmet — Worn when commanding heavy infantry, though Dian Wei dislikes the restriction it imposes. 747 834
  • Iron hammer — Used to smash an opening through a city wall. 984

Relationships

  • Wang Xuan — Benefactor, sworn brother, and commander. Wang Xuan earned Dian Wei's loyalty through courage, hospitality, and trust, later granting him the courtesy name Elai. 601 602 618
  • Hu Zi — Dian Wei's trained tiger and long-time companion. Hu Zi assists in his food scams and later undergoes harsh training to become a war mount. 600 675
  • Zhang Fei — Rival and fellow powerhouse. Their duel was evenly matched until Zhang Fei used his ultimate move; afterward, Dian Wei sought advice from Zhang Fei while developing his own technique. 639 640 656
  • Guan Yu — Fellow high-level warrior who, along with Zhang Fei, provided Dian Wei with insight into developing an ultimate technique. 656
  • Zhou Cang — Captured by Dian Wei on Wang Xuan's orders and used as a sparring partner for Dian Wei's training. 617 618
  • Lu Bu — Major martial rival. Dian Wei injured Lu Bu in direct combat, but Lu Bu exploited Dian Wei's inability to fly to avoid further exchanges. 682 684
  • Sun Ce — Repeated opponent whom Dian Wei defeated multiple times during the defense of a city, eventually forcing Eastern Wu's withdrawal. 1039 1041
  • Zhu Ran — Eastern Wu general killed by Dian Wei after Dian Wei exploited an opening during the city-wall battle. 1042
