Background / History
Chen Changsheng was once known as Chen Changshou, a legendary rogue cultivator called the Turtle Immortal. His recorded life followed the harsh path of a low-status cultivator: poor aptitude, little sect support, self-exploration through health-preserving methods, and earning resources through Talisman Path work. His cautious, “turtle-like” conduct became central to his reputation. 234
During an earlier ascension, Chen was attacked by evil cultivators and had his soul shattered. He survived by preserving his core consciousness and reassembling his soul. The recovery mutated his soul: its largest fragment became his main soul, while other fragments developed into independent clone-souls. 483
Chen initially helped cultivate Li Xiuchang because of a divination shared among the senior brothers and sisters. Over time, however, he came to regard Li as a genuine member of their group rather than merely someone connected to that prediction. 336
When Li’s Charcoal Attribute Mana diverged from the ordinary Fire Starting Skill, Chen collaborated with Zhang Wanzhi to create a tailored continuation technique rather than risk damaging Li’s unusual cultivation path with a generic method. 80 83
Appearance
Chen’s ordinary appearance is described as refined and easygoing. He frequently changes his appearance while traveling, including adopting the guise of a disheveled, bearded middle-aged man to avoid recognition. 44 172
- Calm expression and gentle demeanor in ordinary interactions. 152
- Highly practiced in facial transformation and cultivation-level suppression. 172
- Often operates through clones rather than exposing his main body. 173 205
Personality
Chen is methodical, restrained, and intensely risk-averse. He prefers preparation, concealment, defensive formations, and leaving reserves rather than openly displaying his full strength. He deliberately limits what he reveals while traveling and warns Li Xiuchang against speaking or acting too absolutely. 174
His teaching style reflects the same temperament: slow, systematic, and focused on ensuring understanding before proceeding. He teaches fewer points than Mo Tu or Zhang Wanzhi in the same time, but Li retains the material more securely. 152
Despite his gentleness, Chen can be decisive and ruthless when Li or his allies are threatened. He wiped out the Heavenly Yin Sect after its members refused to provide information and attempted to kill him while he was searching for Li. 224
His rare emotional weakness is Wenwen, his troublesome turtle spirit beast. Wenwen’s escape provokes one of the few occasions on which Chen visibly loses his temper. 173 179
Abilities & Skills
Clone Technique
Chen’s soul mutation allows him to create an exceptional number of independent clones.
- His clone-souls can act separately from the main body and cultivate different Great Daos. 483
- His main body cultivates the Wood Dao, while one clone cultivates the Earth Dao. 483
- Clones explore other worlds, establish teleportation routes, conduct research, and serve as expendable test subjects. 205 276
- He can deploy more than a dozen high-level clones at once in battle. 442 443
- His clones may be barred by world-level rules that require a true main body to enter. 382
Formation Arts
Chen is an elite Formation Master whose expertise is respected even by far older cultivators.
- He can dismantle difficult formations without blood sacrifice and create formations that trap multiple Late Foundation Establishment and Golden Core cultivators. 176
- He conceals sites with illusion arrays before layering defensive formations beneath them. 419
- His formation arts are considered legendary within specialist circles, with Immortal Dust Sect elders acknowledging that his mastery exceeds their own. 426
- He establishes and safeguards cross-realm teleportation arrays, including routes through the Pure Land Realm, the Demon Suppressing Realm, and the Upper Realm. 236 315 430
Concealment and Disguise
Chen specializes in reducing attention, obscuring identity, and escaping danger.
- He can suppress his displayed cultivation, lowering a revealed Golden Core-stage presence to Late Foundation Establishment. 172
- He teaches that disguises should be inconspicuous rather than intimidating, allowing travelers to sever consequences from their true identities. 172
- He uses Shrinking Ground into Inches for rapid movement. 181
- His concealment is effective enough that even cultivators stronger than him may fail to detect him. 254
Dantian Shadow Creation Technique
Chen gave Li Xiuchang the Dantian Shadow Creation Technique while concealing part of its true effect.
- He told Li that it could conceal cultivation across four major realms. 44
- He privately expected that, once Li grew stronger, even Chen and Zhang Wanzhi might be unable to perceive Li’s true cultivation. 44
- He supplied methods for two magical treasures to obscure the technique’s full capabilities and prevent Li from becoming suspicious of its origin. 44
Spellcraft and Instruction
Chen is the neighbor senior brother most skilled in spells and adapts techniques to suit Li Xiuchang’s Charcoal Attribute Mana. 152
- Black Bee Technique — A Charcoal Attribute adaptation of the Fire Bat Technique that produces controllable black tiger-headed bees capable of ignition, poisonous smoke, and concentrated explosions. 152
- Charcoal Array — A temporary defensive array that produces a black shield and adhesive mist which can filter poison, cling to enemy treasures, ignite, or transform into ambush bees. 152
- Send Enemy a Thousand Miles — A spatial escape spell Chen teaches Li in advance of Golden Core cultivation. Its later use can send Chen’s clones to other same-level worlds. 152 203 205
Great Dao and Combat Ability
Chen’s survival-focused approach does not diminish his combat power.
- His Wood Dao main body and Earth Dao clone can use their respective Great Daos simultaneously, making him substantially stronger than an ordinary Grand Luo Golden Immortal. 483
- He captures the escaping Blood Fiend Old Demon after the latter breaks free from the Demon Sealing Land. 183
- He defeats a Foundation Establishment Peak cultivator to secure access to Moonfall Oasis, while intentionally concealing greater strength. 174
- He can use formations, stealth, and clones to destroy strategic targets rather than engage in wasteful direct combat. 443
Relationships
- Li Xiuchang — Junior brother, student, traveling companion, and eventual trusted group member. Chen tailors cultivation methods for him, teaches him spells and survival habits, and repeatedly protects him during expeditions. 80 152 176 336
- Zhang Wanzhi — Fellow senior brother and frequent technical collaborator. The two jointly developed Li’s Charcoal Burning Skill continuation and coordinate plans to keep each other’s excesses under control. 80 83 313
- Mo Tu — Fellow senior brother and ally in cross-realm operations, including the Magic Dust Sect’s campaigns and investigations. 254 390
- Wenwen / Steady — Chen’s turtle spirit beast, whom he calls his “turtle son.” Chen repeatedly confines Wenwen because of its escape attempts and talent for causing trouble. 173 179 337
- Golden Horn — Li Xiuchang’s spirit pet. Golden Horn addresses Chen as “Uncle Chen” and fears him due to Wenwen’s exaggerated descriptions. 231
- Gui Wuyan — Fellow senior brother whose divinations assist Chen’s investigations and missions. 224 390
