Background / History

Chen Changsheng was once known as Chen Changshou, a legendary rogue cultivator called the Turtle Immortal. His recorded life followed the harsh path of a low-status cultivator: poor aptitude, little sect support, self-exploration through health-preserving methods, and earning resources through Talisman Path work. His cautious, “turtle-like” conduct became central to his reputation. 234

During an earlier ascension, Chen was attacked by evil cultivators and had his soul shattered. He survived by preserving his core consciousness and reassembling his soul. The recovery mutated his soul: its largest fragment became his main soul, while other fragments developed into independent clone-souls. 483

Chen initially helped cultivate Li Xiuchang because of a divination shared among the senior brothers and sisters. Over time, however, he came to regard Li as a genuine member of their group rather than merely someone connected to that prediction. 336

When Li’s Charcoal Attribute Mana diverged from the ordinary Fire Starting Skill, Chen collaborated with Zhang Wanzhi to create a tailored continuation technique rather than risk damaging Li’s unusual cultivation path with a generic method. 80 83

Personality

Chen is methodical, restrained, and intensely risk-averse. He prefers preparation, concealment, defensive formations, and leaving reserves rather than openly displaying his full strength. He deliberately limits what he reveals while traveling and warns Li Xiuchang against speaking or acting too absolutely. 174

His teaching style reflects the same temperament: slow, systematic, and focused on ensuring understanding before proceeding. He teaches fewer points than Mo Tu or Zhang Wanzhi in the same time, but Li retains the material more securely. 152

Despite his gentleness, Chen can be decisive and ruthless when Li or his allies are threatened. He wiped out the Heavenly Yin Sect after its members refused to provide information and attempted to kill him while he was searching for Li. 224

His rare emotional weakness is Wenwen, his troublesome turtle spirit beast. Wenwen’s escape provokes one of the few occasions on which Chen visibly loses his temper. 173 179
