Zhang Wanzhi lived at Eastern Geng District, Number One, as one of Li Xiuchang’s senior brothers and neighbors. Though widely regarded as approachable and popular, he and Gui Wuyan initially viewed Li as an outsider whose presence could interfere with their plans; Zhang proposed eventually persuading Li to leave. He also tried to pressure Gui into revealing a lifespan-costly divination through a deliberately dangerous Flying Sword. 5 8

He soon became interested in Li after the junior disciple turned fifty Spirit Stones into seed money for a business and reached the Second Layer of Qi Condensation. Zhang considered Li’s unusual Charcoal Attribute Mana and rapid progress evidence that Gui’s prediction had been correct. 29

As Li’s cultivation developed, Zhang acted as a frequent mentor and collaborator. He advised Li to focus on Spirit Planting, taught him Grain-Aversion Pill refinement, helped conceal his true cultivation through the Dantian Shadow Creation Technique arrangement, and worked with Chen Changsheng and others to create the tailored follow-up Fire Starting Skill. Li eventually uncovered Zhang’s connection to the Artifact Refining Zhang Family.
