Background / History

Kunpeng initially treated Ji Meng's recovery and newly obtained Chaos origin as evidence of deception. He doubted that a seemingly mundane courtyard and its master could possess such power, theorizing instead that the source was an illusion, a hidden Chaos Demon God remnant, or something beyond Heavenly Dao scrutiny. With Di Jun's approval, he dispatched Nine Infant to investigate from afar, privately intending to use the beast as a test of the courtyard's truth 48.

His surveillance failed repeatedly. Nine Infant was stopped by the courtyard barrier, while Kunpeng's own deductions could not penetrate it; observing Chen An's clay-kneading even revealed a natural rhythm resembling the Myriad Stars Array. Later, Kunpeng's Demonic Thought was destroyed when it probed the willow's transformation anomaly, injuring his true body 49 52 62.

During the Demon Court's appeal to the courtyard master, Kunpeng interpreted Chen An's sigh as advice to wait for Heaven's timing. Chen An's later words—“productivity,” “fairness,” and “culture”—overwhelmed Kunpeng's Northern Darkness Secret Deduction Art and forced a profound change in his outlook. At the Purple Heaven Palace, Kunpeng seized the sixth futon vacated by Hong Yun. When Hongjun revealed that the six futons represented Saint Position opportunities, Kunpeng realized that Hong Yun's act of yielding his seat had indirectly cost him this chance. His resentment erupted into an open confrontation with Hong Yun, Zhenyuanzi, Jieyin, and Zhunti; faced with the pressure of the future Sages, he withdrew while preserving his hatred 191 196.

The obsession later consumed him. Through a forbidden divination, Kunpeng discovered a faint thread repairing Hong Yun's foretold demise and traced it to the courtyard at Buzhou Mountain. He abandoned restraint, raced to the courtyard, and attacked its barrier, only to be wounded by its backlash and the purifying “Harmony” ice crystal 207 209.

After further defeats during the Witch-Demon confrontation, Kunpeng burned his soul and sacrificed his origin in an attempt to kill the newly ascended Saint Hong Yun. His vengeful remnant eventually forged a final Saint-Slaying Blood Spear, but Hong Yun's “a thread of life” seal purified both the weapon and Kunpeng's obsession, ending the Demon Master's existence as a dewdrop of Northern Darkness cold 216 226 232.
