Background / History
The earliest known precursors of the Seal Imprint are nearly invisible carvings on the stones of the Small Courtyard. Chen An first mistakes them for random scratches, but later identifies three ancient symbols arranged in an irregular triangle. Their origin and meaning are never determined. 4 6
The phenomenon becomes more apparent as the courtyard’s ordinary materials begin producing Dao-marked patterns. Frost on radish leaves forms an Immortal seal, willow branches carry flowing Golden Patterns, water stains create a star-guiding formation, and clay surfaces display patterns associated with creation and Chaos. 89 99 102
Seal Imprints do not remain limited to written marks. They emerge through interactions among Chen An, the courtyard, its plants, its tools, and outside Dao resonance. A willow dewdrop enters a clay figurine alongside a Spiritual Platform seal, while Nuwa’s Creation and Soul-Bestowal seals complete the process of granting life. 101 102 106
As increasingly powerful beings investigate the courtyard, the Seal Imprint becomes a medium through which the courtyard resists deduction and external power. The Safe Zone, willow branches, well water, and radishes generate seals that obscure Heavenly Secrets, repel attacks, and alter the interpretation of events across the Primordial World. 129 138 149
The Heavenly Dao eventually recognizes the courtyard through the imprint Sage of the Small Courtyard. This recognition spreads across mountains, seas, Pure Lands, and the Northern Darkness, drawing the attention of the Primordial World’s supreme beings while Chen An remains unaware of the phenomenon’s larger significance. 157
Later manifestations translate Chen An’s seemingly ordinary words into large-scale conceptual changes. Productivity, fairness, and culture become seals and systems that reshape the Demon Race’s formations, hierarchy, resource allocation, and collective identity. 164 169
During the later Calamity, the Seal Imprint becomes associated with harmony, purification, and renewal. The Harmony seal defeats Kunpeng’s attack, while the Change seal in a new sprout survives the destruction of Buzhou Mountain and carries the possibility of future Calamities. 209 232 235 238
