Background / History
Hisoka is found severely injured and covered in blood on a road, then taken in by Moritonio's circus despite the troupe's hostility toward him. He recovers from an apparently near-fatal condition within days and immediately begins observing the troupe's performances and techniques. 1 2
He is an unusually capable magician even before learning Nen. His first stage performance is so polished that it earns stronger applause than the performer he replaces, worsening the troupe's resentment toward him. 3
Moritonio discovers that Hisoka can naturally perceive aura and accepts him as a Nen student. Hisoka rapidly surpasses normal learning expectations, mastering Ren in a week and independently grasping advanced principles through observation and combat. 5 6 7
After recognizing Moritonio as the serial killer John Doe, Hisoka provokes him into a fight. He defeats and kills Moritonio, then adapts the dead man's facial-transformation technique into Texture Surprise before leaving the circus with Oboro. 8 9 10
Appearance
Hisoka is a red-haired man with sharp, angular features and an alluring but unsettling expression. His narrow, slit-like eyes and habitual smile give him an openly predatory presence. 1
- Wears clown-style makeup, including a teardrop and a star beneath his eyes. 81
- Fights with playing cards, often manipulating them between his fingers. 3 9
- Has a lean but highly conditioned physique; his agility, reactions, and physical constitution stand out even before formal Nen training. 3
- Uses Texture Surprise and false skin to alter or conceal his appearance, including disguising a severe neck injury. 9 151 169
Personality
Hisoka is intensely curious about unusual people, strength, and combat. From his first days in the circus, he studies others as though appraising or collecting them, memorizing techniques that catch his interest. 1 2
He treats danger as entertainment. He enjoys provoking people into revealing themselves, openly taunts Moritonio after exposing him, and considers powerful opponents more valuable than ordinary slaughter. 8 9 151
Hisoka is also calculating beneath his erratic manner. He recognizes when a fight is premature, leaves Oboro his contact information rather than forcing an immediate battle, and maintains a convincing false role within the Phantom Troupe until it serves his purpose to betray them. 10 143 151
Despite his violence, he can be strikingly childish about perceived rejection. After realizing the Phantom Troupe used him as bait, he demands an apology from Chrollo rather than immediately retaliating. 143
