Background / History
Recruitment and betrayal
Dom encounters Oboro on Sabaody Archipelago while recruiting for the Flame Dragon Pirates. He initially tries to intimidate him but becomes timid after seeing his scarred face. Oboro accepts a low-ranking shipwright position to leave the archipelago and learn how the seas operate 346.
During the Marine crackdown, Dom and his companions increasingly rely on Oboro's advice. The others are captured and reveal the pair's hiding place. Dom survives by following Oboro's escape plan, including posing as a Marine soldier 348 349.
Oboro then explains that their association has made Dom a target of the World Government. Dom admits that he exaggerated his standing within the Flame Dragon Pirates and realizes his captain cannot protect him. Unable to return safely to his former crew, he becomes dependent on Oboro 349.
Transformation and escape from Sabaody
While they hide in a searched building, Oboro tests whether resources from the Demon Slayer world function in the pirate world by using an Upper Rank demon Bloodline Card on Dom. Dom survives the painful transformation and receives a short Nichirin Sword 350.
His changed appearance initially makes him unrecognizable even to former acquaintances. He begins addressing Oboro as “Boss” and accompanies him to Doflamingo's auction house. After the Devil Fruit theft, he continues following Oboro despite his fear of the consequences 351 358.
Their escape eventually takes them through a dangerous underwater route. Dom later regains consciousness inside a Sea King and is astonished to learn how Oboro evaded pursuit 366 368.
From follower to founding officer
Victories over pursuing pirates give Dom confidence in his new strength. On Bona Island, however, Zidal the Decapitator disarms and wounds him, and Maipeng the Meat Grinder joins the attack. Oboro intervenes. The pirates recognize Dom as the Cunning Fox who escaped alongside the Godslayer, exposing both men's identities 359 370 371.
After their bounties rise, Dom travels with Oboro into the East Blue. He obeys an order to kill the Dorans Pirates while sparing their captain for navigation. The group reaches Loguetown under false identities, where Dom reflects on his younger self's dreams at Roger's execution platform. He later helps Oboro infiltrate the Marine base and attacks its guards 377 379 380 383.
In the North Blue, Dom receives further training and becomes a founding officer of the newly established Hell Pirates. His title, Night Wanderer, is intended to establish a new reputation before his original identity is exposed 390 392 413.
North Blue campaigns
Dom and Dorans overwhelm Fish Head Island's military forces as the Hell Pirates seize resources and announce themselves to Doflamingo. During a later battle, Dom rescues Dorans from the swordsman Yurivich, then uses repeated, carefully placed attacks to wear the man down until Oboro intervenes 393 398 399.
After Yurivich joins the crew, Dom participates in the destruction of Ice Island. Yurivich's subsequent bloodline enhancement leaves Dom shaken: he had previously believed he could defeat the swordsman, but now considers his chances nonexistent 400 401.
Following further sparring with Oboro, Dom defeats a deliberately restrained Rob Lucci without using Haki or his special ability. He understands Oboro's unspoken instruction to keep Lucci alive, allowing the captain to recruit him 427 430 431.
Later crew operations
Dom photographs the Hell Pirates' attack on the Celestial Dragons, producing evidence intended to expose the World Government's corruption. Oboro then formally welcomes the group as crew members following their final assessment 444 447.
During the battle involving Shiki's forces, Dom kills the ship's doctor Indigo by appearing behind him and cutting his throat. He also prepares to use his ability when Dorans is endangered by falling debris, although Yurivich reaches him first 454 455.
Oboro later plans for Dom and other officers to lead fleets or squads of their own. Dom's position as his first follower already gives him exceptional standing and temporary authority over the other crew members 468 473.
Appearance
- Build: Thin and slender; his original fighting style compensates for a lack of brute strength 350 390.
- Demon Tribe features: Altered skin tone and two horn-like bumps on his forehead, while retaining a broadly human appearance 350.
- Early disguise: Wears a hat to conceal the forehead protrusions and avoid attracting traffickers interested in an unfamiliar race 351.
- Night Wanderer attire: Wraps his body in black bandages, leaving his facial features exposed. He chooses the outfit for unrestricted movement and concealment 390.
- Weapon placement: Keeps his short Nichirin Sword at the small of his back 429.
Personality
Dom begins as a boastful but anxious pirate. He exaggerates his position in the Flame Dragon Pirates, then panics when he learns that association with Oboro could bring a Marine admiral after him. He is nevertheless capable of gratitude, initially promising to regard Oboro as his benefactor if they escape Sabaody 349.
Repeated victories turn his fear into confidence and enthusiasm for battle. He laughs while killing weaker opponents and becomes intoxicated by the strength Oboro has given him. His defeat against Zidal exposes the limits of that confidence, while Yurivich's later transformation forces him to confront differences in talent and power 359 370 371 401.
His loyalty to Oboro becomes unusually firm: Lucci regards him as the one officer whose devotion to the Godslayer is absolute. Dom also shows concern for individuals, suggesting a tattoo to cover Oboro's slave brand and risking himself to rescue Dorans. These attachments coexist with his willingness to carry out massacres 351 379 399 432.
Abilities & Skills
Demon Tribe Physiology
- Gains substantially greater bodily power and enhanced sight, hearing, and smell after Oboro's Bloodline Card transformation 350.
- Can tolerate sunlight; unlike demons in the Demon Slayer world, he does not need to consume human flesh or blood 350.
- Still requires ordinary food and cannot grow stronger by devouring others. These restrictions result from the foreign bloodline adapting to the pirate world's rules 350.
- Physical enhancement alone does not overcome superior technique: Zidal wounds him despite having no clear advantage in overall speed or reactions 371.
Spatial Movement
- Travels through space to approach targets and attack from unexpected positions 370.
- Can relocate a companion during an escape or rescue, demonstrated when he removes Dorans from beneath Yurivich's greatsword 399.
- Uses the ability underwater. When Dorans questions this, Dom explicitly denies being a Devil Fruit user 387.
- Avoids revealing it unnecessarily in the North Blue because witnesses could recognize his identity 399.
- Oboro's narration associates his power with an assimilated Blood Demon Art, although its specific name and full mechanics are not given 410.
Short-Blade Combat and Movement Techniques
- Fights as an agile assassin, using rapid approaches, evasive movement, and precise cuts rather than direct contests of strength 390 399.
- Reads bodily movement and likely landing positions to find effective angles of attack. Lucci believes even Shave would have difficulty breaking his attacking rhythm quickly 432.
- Against durable opponents, adds wounds gradually instead of risking a premature finishing strike 399.
- Defeats Indigo by using spatial movement to reach his back and slit his throat, though the doctor's explosive attacks leave Dom with minor burns 454.
Haki
- Possesses Haki by the time of his fight with Lucci; no specific type is identified 431.
- Does not use it in their restrained duel. Oboro considers it a decisive advantage because Lucci has not yet awakened Haki 431.
Infiltration and Practical Skills
- Successfully impersonates a Marine soldier during the Sabaody search, answering a corporal without drawing suspicion 349.
- Helps maintain a false crew identity while entering Loguetown 380.
- Can take the helm when Dorans is unavailable 401.
- Prepares food aboard ship, although his cooking is described as merely sufficient to fill their stomachs 390.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Short Nichirin Sword — Given to him by Oboro after his transformation. Shaped like a short dagger and sturdier than ordinary blades; it replaces his inferior previous weapon 350.
- Black bandages — His characteristic combat outfit, selected for mobility and concealment 390.
- Photographic evidence — Takes photographs of the crew attacking Celestial Dragons for Oboro's campaign against the World Government 447.
Relationships
- Oboro — Captain, benefactor, and trainer. Their alliance begins as a desperate escape partnership and develops into absolute loyalty; Dom's early service earns him exceptional authority aboard the ship 349 350 399 432 473.
- Flame Dragon Pirates — Former crew. Dom's companions betray his location after capture, and his association with Oboro prevents him from safely returning 349 351.
- Dorans — Subordinate and crewmate. Dorans addresses the younger Dom as “Big Brother”; Dom encourages him to earn the captain's favor and later rescues him from Yurivich 387 399.
- Yurivich — Initially an opponent, later a fellow officer and sparring participant. His enhancement makes Dom painfully aware of the gap in their talent and strength 399 401 427.
- Rob Lucci — Former opponent and later crewmate. Dom keeps him alive on Oboro's implicit orders; Lucci subsequently recognizes both his elusive fighting style and unwavering loyalty 430 431 432.
