Background
A native of Sunyshore City, Volkner grew up alongside Denji as his closest friend and rival. While Denji remained in Sunyshore to develop the city and lead its Gym, Volkner left to travel, seek stronger opponents, and build his strength through repeated battles. His setbacks only intensified his desire to fight. 362
Before fighting Jing He, Volkner had challenged Cynthia 108 times without a single victory. Rather than discouraging him, those losses established his defining persistence: he continues to challenge opponents who overwhelm him. 337
Volkner eventually became Sinnoh’s Fire-type Elite Four member. During Palkia’s rampage, he called out his full team and fought to delay the Legendary Pokémon, declaring that Palkia would have to face him until he stopped breathing. 674 739
Appearance
Volkner is conspicuous for his large, fiery-red afro, which is repeatedly compared to flames when his fighting spirit rises. He commonly stands with both hands in his pockets and projects a delinquent-like swagger. 555 666 674
- Fiery-red explosive afro.
- Often wears a hands-in-pockets pose.
- Described as having a “pure delinquent” aura when entering tournament arenas. 555
- His hair and flushed appearance become even more dramatic when excited, exhausted, or affected by spicy food. 674 778
Personality
Volkner is passionate, impulsive, and intensely battle-hungry. He seeks out strong Trainers wherever he travels, often ignoring obvious danger, inconvenient circumstances, or type disadvantages once a battle begins. 306 555 685
His confidence regularly becomes boastfulness, especially after a victory or promotion, but he does not resent defeat. He treats losses as reasons to fight again, whether against Cynthia, Jing He, Denji, Leon, or other powerful opponents. 337 778 788
Despite his recklessness, Volkner is loyal and dependable when a crisis demands action. He fought Palkia to buy time for others and later remained behind to guard Colress and Ghetsis while Jing He and Cynthia departed for Giant Chasm. 674 597
Abilities & Skills
Emotion-Driven Battling
Volkner is a classic emotion-driven Trainer whose commands and fighting spirit directly raise his team’s momentum. His style prioritizes explosive pressure, decisive clashes, and pushing Pokémon past apparent limits. 74 547
- Becomes more dangerous as his enthusiasm rises during a battle.
- Prefers direct exchanges over cautious positioning or preservation tactics.
- Can influence otherwise measured opponents into adopting a fiercer battle rhythm. 555
- Struggles with facilities requiring rented Pokémon, team construction, and slower tactical adaptation, such as the Battle Factory. 337
Fire-Type Specialization
Volkner specializes in Fire-type Pokémon and fields a team built around overwhelming offensive pressure. 74 739
- Infernape — His signature Pokémon and primary ace; its Blaze-fueled attacks are capable of threatening multiple Champion-level Pokémon in succession. 74 338 788
- Magmortar — Used against Jing He’s Charcadet and Klara’s Whiscash. 337 555
- Typhlosion — Uses high-output attacks such as Eruption and Overheat. 338
- Flareon — Partnered with Denji’s Electivire in the “Fire Thunder Duo” doubles strategy. 371
- Arcanine — Uses Intimidate, harsh sunlight, and Solar Beam in battle. 555
- Rapidash — Used during his match against Klara. 555
- Ninetales — Used to establish sunny weather against Leon. 788
Infernape and Blaze
Infernape is treated as a separate category from the rest of Volkner’s team because of its exceptional power and connection with Volkner’s emotions. 338
- Its Blaze activation can turn a losing battle into an extended offensive surge.
- Repeatedly uses Flare Blitz despite escalating recoil damage. 339
- Clashed head-on with Jing He’s Dragonite while Dragonite was using Outrage. 338
- Defeated Leon’s Rillaboom, Cinderace, and Rhyperior consecutively under sunny weather. 788
- Recognized that the ancient king possessing Volkner was not its Trainer, then attacked the possessor to reclaim Volkner’s body. 540
Sunny Day Tactics
Although primarily a straightforward battler, Volkner gradually adopts elements of Sunny Day team strategy. 360 784
- Uses sunlight to support Fire-type offense.
- Had Arcanine establish harsh sunlight before using Solar Beam against Whiscash. 555
- Used Ninetales to support Infernape during his battle with Leon. 788
- Learns by observing Jing He’s battle methods, though he applies tactics through his own aggressive style. 784
Physical Endurance
Volkner possesses unusual physical toughness and continues moving through situations that incapacitate or endanger ordinary Trainers. 674 689
- Survived being carried through the sky by Galarian Moltres and falling afterward. 689
- Is regarded by Jing He as exceptionally durable, comparable only to figures such as Ash or Red among ordinary Trainers. 689
- Fought alongside his full team against Palkia despite the danger. 674

- Jing He — Teacher and frequent rescuer. Volkner repeatedly seeks Jing He’s guidance, challenges him to battles, and trusts him to handle crises beyond his own ability. 306 538 655
- Infernape — Signature Pokémon and closest battle partner. Infernape responds strongly to Volkner’s passion and fiercely protects him, including during his possession in the Ancient City. 338 540

- Cynthia — A repeatedly challenged opponent whom Volkner has faced 108 times without winning. Her strength serves as one of his major benchmarks. 337
- Watari — Friend and frequent observer of Volkner’s antics. Watari respects Volkner’s strength but regularly mocks his impulsiveness and boasting. 337 778
- Aaron — Fellow Sinnoh Elite Four member and companion. Aaron observes Volkner’s battles and travels alongside him during several tournaments. 337 543
- Calyrex — Temporarily possesses Volkner through the Wooden Crown to communicate with Jing He, describing the act as a minor punishment for Volkner’s disrespect. 686
Story Role / Major Arcs
Challenge to Jing He
After watching Jing He speedrun the Battle Frontier, Volkner becomes determined to challenge him and proposes a long-distance Battle Frontier race. He later receives the battle he wanted at Cynthia’s training grounds. 306 337
Volkner’s Magmortar is defeated by Charcadet, his Typhlosion falls to Dragonite, and Infernape endures a brutal clash with Dragonite’s Outrage. Jing He ultimately stops Infernape’s charge with Ice Ninetales, freezing both Pokémon and Trainer within an ice sculpture before preventing further freezing. 337 338 339
Sunyshore and the Seven-Star Restaurant
Volkner returns to Sunyshore out of concern for Denji’s growing disinterest in battling. He helps Jing He enter the Gym and later reunites with Denji for the Seven-Star Restaurant doubles tournament. 362 366
As the “Fire Thunder Duo,” Volkner and Denji advance to face Jing He. Their coordination and combination of Fire- and Electric-type tactics pressure Jing He, but Gengar and Ice Ninetales defeat Flareon and Electivire. 371
Unown and Ancient City Incidents
Volkner is caught among Unown and becomes a tool in their attempt to drag Jing He and Cynthia into an illusion. Jing He calms the Unown with Giratina’s aura, allowing them to deliver their warning of world destruction. 376 378
Later, Volkner becomes lost in Unova’s desert, discovers an Ancient City, and awakens its Ghost-type defenders after mistaking an ancient stone orb for food. The spirit of an ancient king possesses him and commands Golurk, Cofagrigus, and other Ghost-type Pokémon until Gengar steals and replaces the orb, forcing the spirit out. 538 539 540
Eindoak and the Dragon Vein
During the Eindoak crisis, Volkner expresses doubt about stopping the Dragon Vein disaster. Jing He answers that he believes Volkner can stop it, and Volkner’s words trigger the appearance of Reshiram, the Dragon of Truth. 593 594
Crown Tundra Expedition
Volkner accompanies Jing He to the Crown Tundra, where Calyrex briefly uses him as a vessel to communicate. He later encounters Galarian Moltres, a G-Max Copperajah, Regidrago, and the Split-Decision Ruins while repeatedly placing himself in danger through curiosity and impulsiveness. 685 686 689 690
Pokémon World Coronation Series
Volkner rises through the Pokémon World Coronation Series by pursuing strong opponents rather than carefully protecting his ranking. He defeats Denji to qualify for the Master Exchange Battle, then reaches the Masters Tournament’s Top Sixteen. 778 788
His battle against Leon becomes his defining tournament performance: Infernape defeats three of Leon’s Pokémon in a row before Leon’s Charizard finally secures victory. The match establishes Volkner as one of Sinnoh’s most prominent rising Elite Four members. 788
Trivia
- Jing He saves Volkner in his phone as “Afro Monkey +3,” with the number tracking entries in Jing He’s personal notebook about him. 376
- Volkner has been possessed twice: once by an ancient king’s spirit in Unova and once briefly by Calyrex in Galar. 540 686
- He once mistook an ancient stone sphere for a Berry because he and Infernape were hungry. 540
- Volkner was nicknamed “Playing-with-Fire Afro” because of his fearless, high-risk battling style. 555
- Although he has no Torkoal, Jing He once criticized him for lacking one—not for battle strategy, but because Torkoal would make a good picnic stove. 360
