Background
Dragonite was born as a Dratini in Blackthorn City’s Dragon Sanctuary, where its father served as the sanctuary’s guardian. It idolized its father as an invincible protector and developed an intense desire to become strong enough to challenge him. Even as a Dratini, it was strong-willed enough to face the rampaging Red Gyarados without fear. 150
After observing Jing He and his team, Dratini chose to challenge Ice Vulpix and was successfully captured by Jing He. Jing He planned to train it as a dual attacker, taking advantage of its broad movepool rather than limiting it to physical attacks. 152 153
Dratini evolved into Dragonair on a beach after becoming troubled by the idea that it was Jing He’s weakest and least useful partner. Its evolution was unusually brilliant due to its accumulated power and deep bond with Jing He; as Dragonair, it could fly and perform Dragon Dance in the air. 206
Upon returning to the Dragon Sanctuary, Dragonair underwent the sanctuary’s traditional progress test against its father. Refusing to accept defeat, it evolved into Dragonite and fought beside Jing He. The guardian ultimately recognized its growth, gifted it a Dragon Fang, and encouraged it to leave the sanctuary to continue its journey. 330 331
Appearance
Dragonite is a large, upright Dragon/Flying-type Pokémon with orange-yellow scales, a rounded belly, short arms, and small back wings. It grew notably larger after evolving, eventually standing close to three meters tall. 330 507
- Broad, sturdy build with a notably round belly.
- Orange-yellow scales that are described as shiny in battle. 570
- Small wings that nevertheless support highly agile, high-speed flight.
- Usually wears protective flying gear when carrying Jing He or passengers. 385 507
Mega Dragonite
Mega Dragonite retains Dragonite’s general body shape but takes on features resembling Dragonair. 794
- Develops a pair of enormous white wings on its head.
- Gains a slimmer tail ending in a crystal orb.
- Its tail orb is associated with controlling weather and airflow.
- Its enlarged head wings greatly improve its aerial speed and maneuverability. 794 795
Personality
Dragonite has been determined to become strong since its Dratini days. It is particularly competitive against other Dragon-type Pokémon and is reluctant to lose to them regardless of type disadvantages or the opponent’s status. 150 427 505
Although battle-driven, it trusts Jing He completely. This trust allows it to respond to commands while using Outrage—normally a state that restricts a Pokémon’s actions—and to fight through confusion or loss of control with Jing He’s Aura support. 330 427 505
It also loves flying and needs to make regular flights to feel satisfied. Its appetite became exceptionally large after evolving, and it has expressed concern about gaining weight. 331 790
Abilities & Skills
Multiscale
Dragonite’s Multiscale greatly reduces damage while it is at full health, allowing it to withstand attacks that would otherwise be devastating. 331 505
- Blocked much of Shauntal’s Haxorus’s Dragon Claw while at full health. 505
- Is lost once Dragonite takes damage; Sableye’s Fake Out broke the effect at the start of their battle. 716
- Enables Dragonite to safely establish Dragon Dance or absorb an opening attack before retaliating.
Outrage Control
Dragonite can use Outrage without fully surrendering its mind to berserk rage when supported by Jing He’s Aura and their mutual trust. 330
- Combined Outrage with Extreme Speed against the sanctuary guardian Dragonite. 330
- Used Extreme Speed during Outrage to defeat Tobias’s Latios in a clash against Draco Meteor. 427
- Used Air Cutter and Dragon Rush while in an Outrage state against Shauntal’s Haxorus. 505
- Double Outrage is substantially harder to control and nearly caused it to go berserk. 442
- Outrage places a significant physical burden on Dragonite and cannot be used carelessly. 331
Aerial Mobility
Dragonite specializes in explosive aerial movement, combining Dragon Dance, Agility, and Extreme Speed to overwhelm opponents or evade attacks. 330
- Used Dragon Dance to raise its speed and power before striking with Extreme Speed.
- Its speed-focused Extreme Speed can trade speed for greater impact force. 330
- Won the Fortree Flying Race with Jing He aboard, earning the Feather Badge and a TM for Roost. 387
- Received flight training from Rayquaza, improving its speed and eventually laying the foundation for Dragon Ascent. 466 663
Dragon Ascent
Dragonite learned an abridged form of Rayquaza’s Dragon Ascent through Rayquaza’s teachings, a Dragon Ascent scroll, and the power it gained from Rayquaza-related items. 663 683
- Used Dragon Ascent repeatedly against Regidrago inside the collapsing Split-Decision Ruins. 690
- Its Dragon Ascent dramatically increases its offensive ceiling even without activating Outrage. 712
- Requires dangerous close-range diving attacks and was developed from Rayquaza’s far more advanced technique.
Move Coverage
Jing He trained Dragonite as a dual attacker with both physical and special techniques. 153
- Dragon-type: Dragon Rush, Dragon Pulse, Dragon Cheer, Outrage, and Dragon Ascent. 331 690 793
- Speed and physical: Extreme Speed, Aqua Tail, Ice Punch, and Dragon Dance. 330 369 800
- Special and elemental: Water Cannon, Thunderbolt, Icy Wind, Air Cutter, Hurricane, Blizzard, Thunder, and Aura Sphere. 150 279 793 794
- Its broad coverage lets it threaten targets that would normally resist Dragonite’s standard Dragon- and Flying-type attacks. 794
Mega Evolution
Dragonite can Mega Evolve despite no Mega Stone being known for its species. Its transformation was made possible by its connection to Rayquaza, including a fragment of Rayquaza’s grass-green orb and its acquired Dragon Ascent traits. 790 794
- Mega Evolution is activated through Jing He’s Key Stone and Aura connection. 790 794
- The form was powerful enough for observers to identify it as Legendary-level. 794
- Mega Dragonite defeated Geeta’s Terastallized Bisharp and helped secure Jing He’s 6–1 victory. 795
Equipment / Items
- Luxury Ball — Dragonite’s regular Poké Ball. 570
- Dragon Fang — Given by its father after Dragonite’s evolution and sanctuary trial. 331
- Protective flying gear — Purchased for the Flying Race and modified by Tinkaton and Charcadet for safer, easier installation. 385
- Dragon Ascent scroll — A Rayquaza-related inheritance that supported its development of Dragon Ascent. 663 683
- Fragment of Rayquaza’s grass-green orb — Swallowed by Dragonite; strengthened its connection to Mega Evolution. 790
Relationships
- Jing He — Trainer and closest partner. Jing He’s Aura, confidence, and commands allow Dragonite to maintain clarity during Outrage and fight beyond normal limits. 330 427 505
- Sanctuary Dragonite — Father and former guardian of the Dragon Sanctuary. Tested Dragonite’s growth, taught it aspects of Outrage control, gave it a Dragon Fang, and sent it out to explore the world. 150 330 331
- Rayquaza — Flight mentor and source of Dragonite’s Dragon Ascent and Mega Evolution potential. Rayquaza provided guidance, an orb fragment, and confirmation that Dragonite could Mega Evolve. 466 790
- Tinkaton — Teammate and “Dragon Knight” partner. Tinkaton modified Dragonite’s flying gear, and the two are considered a particularly dangerous combination against Dragon-types. 385 442
- Latios — Respected Dragon-type opponent. Dragonite fought Latios without fear and defeated it by combining Outrage with Extreme Speed. 427
- Gengar — Teammate that encouraged Dragonite’s evolution and frequently supports Jing He’s plans alongside it. 330 331
