Background / History

Black Stone City Calamity

The original tree appears during the outbreak in Black Stone City, growing from mangled flesh, bones, and skulls. Its roots pierce nearby transformed people, while mist thickens around its expanding canopy. The resulting Demon Domain prevents inhabitants from leaving the city 20 21 22.

According to Mu Canglong’s investigations, it initially descends upon the Prefectural Office, killing the prefect and the city’s senior officials. Survivors gather near the city gates to remain beyond its growing canopy and falling Qi Roots. Its emergence also drives other Yao Beasts out of the surrounding area 22 42.

Fang Xi’s First Cultivated Tree

By Chapter 66, Fang Xi possesses three viable seeds and chooses the strongest for the Longevity Technique. He repeatedly cleanses it before planting, hoping to overcome his low-grade Spiritual Root aptitude. The seed becomes his Destiny Spiritual Plant, but immediately reveals a hunger for sibling seeds and flesh 66 103.

The tree’s benefits come with a hidden danger. A surviving trace of its original instinct gradually influences Fang Xi, encouraging cruelty and an unwillingness to leave his cultivation site. Once he reaches True Gang Manifestation, he recognizes the manipulation, attacks the tree, and completely refines it. This removes the threat to his will but destroys the tree’s vitality 126 133 134.

Renewed Planting

Zhou Tong later locates the original Ancestor Yao Mo Tree at Sanchuan City. Fang Xi leads the Martial God Sect into its Demon Domain to obtain seeds rather than attempt its destruction. The expedition yields four seeds and a large branch, but the participating Martial Gods suffer severe Qi and Blood depletion 195 203 205.

Using improved purification methods, Fang Xi plants another tree on Dragon Fish Island. This tree supports both the Longevity Technique and the island’s defensive array; the renewed cultivation eventually enables him to achieve the Yi Wood Dharma Body without the false progress caused by the first tree’s instincts 206 208 223 227.

Ancestor Form and Earth Immortal Cultivation

Fang Xi later plants a retained seed inside the Mountain Sea Pearl, discovering that his connection remains intact even outside the portable space. He subsequently moves this cultivated tree onto Emerald Island, where its roots absorb the Netherworld Earth Vein and seal its fissure 308 399.

To improve its potential, he has the cultivated tree swallow an Ancestor seed. The resulting transformation preserves the Longevity Technique connection and gives the trunk a face resembling Fang Xi’s own. Through this encounter, he learns that the birth of Great Liang’s Mo was influenced by a trace of Dao Fruit power 432 433.

The ancestor-form tree reaches Fourth-grade on Emerald Island and Fifth-grade after relocation to the Earth Immortal Realm. It later reaches Eighth-grade and becomes increasingly integrated with Fang Xi’s Earth Immortal cultivation, including his attempts to refine Heaven and Earth Origin 449 611 892 918 955 990.

Appearance

  • Original form: A pitch-black tree supported by roots extending from white bones and skulls, with vein-like bark patterns and faces flickering within its canopy 20.
  • Young cultivated form: Resembles a black banyan tree; develops a verdant crown, black aerial roots, and hanging vines 103 105.
  • Demon wood: Has dark, scale-patterned bark. Its interior contains blood-red streaks rather than growth rings 206.
  • Ancestor-form trunk: Bears dragon-scale-like patterns and faint bloodstains. After transformation, its patterns form Fang Xi’s face, which he conceals beneath shifting bark 433.
  • Post-tribulation leaves: Emerald-green leaves carry intricate gold-and-silver patterns; later, jade-like leaves emit faint golden and silver halos 456 832.
  • Eighth-grade condition: Remains lush but also develops an aura of decay associated with Fang Xi’s Great Ascension and the fusion of part of the spiritual root into his Earth Immortal path 918.

Personality

The unpurified tree displays hunger, cruelty, and resistance to exploitation. Fang Xi’s first sapling conveys grievance when denied food, while the mature tree becomes increasingly angry as he drains its life essence. Its surviving instincts eventually attempt to turn their shared connection into a means of influencing its master 103 126 133.

Its responses are not limited to aggression. It expresses joy at germination and excitement when fed nourishing flesh. Fang Xi initially considers gentler names such as “Everlasting Green Tree” and “Longevity Tree,” but retains “Yao Mo Tree” after witnessing its cannibalistic appetite 103 222.

The original Ancestor possesses awareness beyond these basic emotions: it detects intruders and communicates through corpses hanging from its branches 203.

Abilities & Skills

Demon Domain and Curse Power

  • Produces a black-mist enclosure that blocks passage between its territory and the outside world 21 22.
  • Its later domain spans a hundred li; both entry and escape become difficult as it approaches the power of a third-grade Forbidden Great Array 203.
  • Can rapidly expand its domain to engulf airborne and ground-based enemies. Fang Xi combines this with formation-based teleportation to isolate targets 531.
  • Wields Curse Power, which Mu Canglong describes as more dangerous than Blood Qi Power, True Force, or True Energy. His affliction causes black-blood vomiting and collapse 22.

Parasitism and Wood Puppets

  • Parasitizes human and animal bodies, using roots and seeds to establish control 22 105.
  • Fang Xi controls the tree, which controls its seeds, creating an indirect command chain for his Wood Puppet Technique 105.
  • Puppet seeds are one major grade below their mother tree 105.
  • A fully refined offspring can fight and devour competing parasitic roots, extracting hostile seeds from infected bodies 204.
  • After the ancestor-form transformation, roots and vines can dismantle and modify Fourth-grade Yao bodies with exceptional precision 433 456.
  • Limit: Even at Fifth-grade, its flesh-and-blood puppets cannot reproduce a Spirit Transmutation cultivator’s ability to manipulate Heaven and Earth Spiritual Energy. It likewise cannot create a true Void Returning-level Wood Puppet 615 639 665.

Feeding and Growth

  • Consumes sibling seeds, flesh, blood, and Taisui meat to fuel growth 103.
  • Can hunt fish through underground water veins; Fang Xi raises Taisui’s grade to improve the quality of its regular nourishment 114.
  • Absorbs energy from the Netherworld Earth Vein while its densely packed roots plug the fissure 399.
  • Large quantities of Yao Race and Mo Race flesh produce much stronger feedback than lower-grade Taisui meat 515 524 527.
  • Limit: Neither accumulated blood essence nor the flesh of the Fifth-grade Valley God Demon Venerable is sufficient to break its Fifth-grade bottleneck in the mortal realm 607.

Longevity Symbiosis

  • Becomes an extension of Fang Xi through the Longevity Technique, allowing him to issue commands by thought 103.
  • Transfers plant essence and pure blood energy through its Qi Roots, restoring vitality and extending or replenishing lifespan 103 308 524.
  • Supports Fang Xi’s acquisition of the Qing Mu Spirit Body and Yi Wood Dharma Body 110 227.
  • Its exceptional growth and lifespan feedback make it far more effective for this technique than ordinary spiritual roots 308 433.
  • Early restriction: Fang Xi must remain within the plant’s effective range; around five or six miles, the connection begins to weaken 66 103.
  • Later workaround: Keeping the tree inside the Mountain Sea Pearl preserves the Great Heavenly Cycle circulation while allowing Fang Xi to travel 308 456.

Root Manipulation and Mobility

  • Uses aerial roots and vines to seize living creatures, suspend corpses and puppets, and transfer nourishment 20 103 223.
  • Can uproot itself and move, though its normal speed is much slower than a cultivator’s flight 277 399.
  • Compresses its canopy into a ball of branches and vines when emerging from the Mountain Sea Pearl 399.
  • Gains “Size as Desired” after reaching Fourth-grade, allowing it to shrink for transport without acquiring a human form 449 456.

Tribulation Resistance

  • Gold-and-silver-patterned leaves diminish the power of its Fourth-grade tribulation lightning as they are consumed 449.
  • Because Fang Xi and the tree are treated as one entity, it can shed leaves and expend vital energy to dissipate residual tribulation power affecting him 573.
  • Survives its Fifth-grade Heavenly Tribulation and shows rapid recovery afterward 611.

Earth Immortal Integration

  • Fang Xi’s Earth Immortal Primordial Spirit carries a central Yao Mo Tree imprint 990.
  • With Myriad Wood Mother Qi, a sprout rapidly absorbs Heaven and Earth Origin Energy; its roots probe toward the world’s origin and Heart of Heaven Mark 955.
  • Its roots form a vast net that pierces the seven-colored crystal associated with Heaven and Earth Origin, provoking backlash and thunderclouds 990.
  • During Fang Xi’s Dao Lord phenomena, the Tree of the Great Dao takes the Yao Mo Tree’s form, with branches entering a river of time and absorbing the Power of Time 1046.

Associated Items

  • Yao Mo Tree Seeds — Used to establish new Destiny Spiritual Plants and create parasitic puppets. Fang Xi initially possesses three seeds, assessed as comparable to at least Tier Three spirit plants 66 105.
  • Ancestor branches — Can nourish new saplings and serve as artifact materials 206.
  • Life and Death Seal — Crafted primarily from Ancestor branches; later placed inside a cultivated tree through the Treasure Planting Art to strengthen it while conserving Fang Xi’s Golden Core origin 277 308.
  • Mountain Sea Pearl — Portable space that lets Fang Xi carry the living tree without severing the Longevity Technique connection, although inferior spiritual energy can slow cultivation 308 456.
  • Nine Nether Profound Wood Great Array — Uses the living tree as its core. Removing the Fourth-grade tree from Emerald Island reduces the array to a peak Third-grade Mysterious Wood Great Array 208 456.

Relationships

  • Fang Xi — Cultivator, master, and symbiotic partner. He suppresses the first offspring’s rebellion, improves seed purification, and later integrates the ancestor-form tree into his Earth Immortal path 103 133 206 918.
  • Ancestor Yao Mo Tree — Source of the cultivated offspring. Its seed eventually dominates and transforms Fang Xi’s later tree without breaking his control connection 66 432 433.
  • Taisui — Renewable source of nourishing flesh. By Third-grade, it is no longer afraid of the tree and appears comfortable beneath its protection 114 401.
  • Mu Canglong — Victim of the Black Stone City calamity who explains the tree’s parasitism and Curse Power to Fang Xi 22.
  • Zhou Tong — Discovers the Ancestor’s Demon Domain at Sanchuan City, enabling Fang Xi’s expedition for new seeds 195.
  • Green Horn Fish Dragon — Fears being fed to the tree; Fang Xi uses that threat to pressure it into advancing to Third-grade 308.

Trivia

  • Despite its name, the tree is specifically classified as a Mo, not merely an unusually powerful Yao 22.
  • Fang Xi finds the Black Stone City tree recorded in Mo archives but discovers no other tree-shaped Mo that could replace it 69.
  • The original Ancestor does not remain permanently rooted in one city. It periodically devours populations and relocates; a later report confirms that it abandons a lifeless city for another settlement 195 196.
  • Zhang Mingding witnesses the original Ancestor disappear after apparently reaching its growth limit, matching the reported tendency of “World Ending”-level Mo to vanish 280 283.
  • Its limit-breaking lifespan properties are attributed to the Dao Fruit influence behind its creation, rather than ordinary spiritual-plant cultivation alone 433 918.
