Vol. 3The Dark Bird’s Expansion

Gawain expanded the Dark Bird Group’s influence through Alabasta, Drum Island, and the Grand Line, gathering allies and preparing the Sea Train project. The volume ended with him entering the East Blue, defeating a pirate fleet, and beginning to organize the region.

Arc 9The Dark Bird’s New Allies

Gawain brought the Shandia back to Jaya, reached an understanding with Shanks, and began preparing to help Alabasta. When Ace arrived in Alabasta, Rayleigh revealed that Ace was Roger’s son and Gawain’s crew took him in for training.

  • Gawain offered the Shandia a home and a chance to return Jaya to its original location, then left them a week to decide whether to board his ship.
  • Shanks and Rayleigh fought at Golden Town until Akainu attacked, and Gawain arrived with God's Island to restore Jaya and stop the battle.
  • Gawain and Shanks agreed to remain allies, with Shanks restraining pirates while Gawain checked the Marines, and Shanks asked Gawain to spare Monkey D. Luffy.
  • Gawain allowed Akainu to pursue Shanks, defended Rayleigh’s place aboard his ship, and considered Akainu’s proposals for a Marine purge and World Military Draft.

Arc 10The Dark Bird Expands

Gawain brought Alabasta under the Dark Bird Group’s protection, recruited Crocodile, Robin, Vivi, and others, and began building a railway while arranging for Zephyr to train his crew. After leaving Alabasta, the group set course for Drum Island to obtain Zephyr’s medical care and mechanical hand.

  • Gawain recruited Ace into the Iron Eagle Group, then brought aid to Katorea and organized its residents as the Dark Bird Group distributed food and water.
  • Gawain forced Crocodile to join him, recruited Robin to publish accurate history, and put Crocodile’s Baroque Works officers to work as agents.
  • Gawain and his crew restored rain to Alabasta, raised the Dark Bird Flag, and began building a railway as a relief project, and Vivi joined the ship with Cobra’s approval.
  • Chopper continued treating injured animals under Dr. Kureha’s guidance, while Shanks met Whitebeard and learned that he and Whitebeard had both partnered with Gawain.

Arc 11The Winter Island and Little Garden Arc

Gawain deposed Wapol, helped Drum Kingdom recover, and brought Kureha and Chopper aboard while the crew honored Hiriluk’s dream with pink snowfall. They then recruited Dorry and Brogy to help secure Little Garden, took control of Whiskey Peak, and prepared to enter Laboon in search of Crocus.

  • Gawain rescued a sick girl in Drum Kingdom, captured Wapol with Issho and Kuma, and appointed Dalton as the new king.
  • Kureha treated Gawain’s dangerous exhaustion, joined the crew with Chopper, and began treating Zephyr’s failing health and injured arm.
  • Gawain helped Drum Kingdom restore its medical care and celebrated Hiriluk’s dream as Franky’s cannon spread pink snow across the island.
  • Gawain fought Dorry on Little Garden, won his respect, and recruited Dorry and Brogy to guard a future station and protect travelers.
  • Franky completed Zephyr’s new mechanical arm, and the crew endured a hurricane before reaching Whiskey Peak.

Arc 12Reverse Mountain Alliance

Gawain brought Laboon into his crew, met Dragon at Reverse Mountain, and secured the Revolutionary Army’s cooperation with his plans. After crossing into the East Blue, he defeated a pirate fleet and began organizing the region for the Sea Train project.

  • Gawain promised Laboon he would take him to find Brook, and Laboon joined the voyage while Crocus agreed to help the crew as a doctor.
  • Rayleigh persuaded Crocus that Gawain’s reforms offered a better path than piracy, while Gawain explained why he planned to begin in the East Blue.
  • Kuma met Dragon and Sabo at Reverse Mountain, declared his faith in Gawain’s cause, and warned Gawain that the Revolutionary Army had gathered nearby.
  • Gawain and Dragon fought while their crews clashed, and Gawain’s officers captured Dragon before Ace and Sabo ended the confrontation.
  • Gawain freed Dragon and proposed making Sabo a liaison, then negotiated Revolutionary Army withdrawals and support for his planned pirate blockade.
  • Seventeen days later, Gawain had Laboon lifted over the Red Line and headed for the East Blue as Smoker battled more than one hundred pirate ships near Reverse Mountain.
