Background / History
Tianlan Sect was founded by Patriarch Zhiyang and Patriarch Qiongyue, Dao Companions who descended from the upper realm. They established their lineage in the Taichang Realm out of compassion for the difficulty lower-realm cultivators faced in pursuing cultivation. Though outsiders consider it a patchwork sect, it possesses a core inheritance of its own 35.
Its orthodox inheritance is the Yin-Yang Profound Clarity Path Derivation True Scripture, an upper-realm technique cultivated jointly by a fire-attribute and water-attribute Heavenly Spiritual Root disciple. When both practitioners reach late Nascent Soul, secret arts can give them a greater than fifty-percent chance of entering Deity Transformation; this system has allowed the sect to maintain multiple Deity Transformation True Lords through many eras 35.
The sect endured a coordinated internal and external crisis when much of its family lineage conspired with the Xuanyuan, Nanhua, and Five Elements Sects. The traitors helped enable an assault that damaged the sect protection formation, but the Tianlan Sect ultimately repelled the invasion, destroyed the Xuanyuan Sect, drove out the Five Elements Sect, and imposed terms on the Nanhua Sect 304 343 345 346.
After the Royal Court's departure reshaped the Taichang Realm, Tianlan Sect emerged as the center of one of its two remaining major alliances. Its possession of an Ascension Platform and Fang Xiao's rise greatly increased its influence and drew hostile Holy Land-level powers to its mountain gate 661 662.

Lineages
- Master-Disciple lineage — The faction loyal to the sect's central inheritance and leadership; it opposed the rebelling family lineage during the Battle of Tianlan 329 330.
- Family lineage — Influential sect families that lost power after disciples who endangered the sect were purged. Led in part by Nascent Soul families of the Du family, most joined a conspiracy with outside Holy Lands; the faction was subsequently suppressed and eliminated 304 329 345.
Locations and Infrastructure
- Taixuan Peak — The central peak of the sect and location of the True Spirit Hall 90.
- True Spirit Hall — The main hall and command center for sect affairs, defense coordination, and high-level meetings 90 330.
- Heavenly Outer Peak / Heavenly Outer Heaven — Fang Xiao's peak and a sect location used for cultivation and internal affairs 3 364.
- Thirty-Seven Peaks — Defensive gathering points where disciples assembled after the sect protection formation failed 343.
- Teleportation Hall — Controls sect teleportation arrays; its fall during the Battle of Tianlan enabled enemy formation masters to infiltrate the sect 342 343.
- Tianliang Island Outpost — A South Sea stronghold in Tianliang Immortal City, managed by sect disciple Lu Liang 294.
- Seven Kill Islands Outpost — Another documented South Sea station accessible through sect identity-token communications 294.
Defenses and Resources
- Sect protection formation — The primary barrier defending Tianlan Sect. The Nine Yuan Heart Extinguishing Array damaged its core during the Three Sects' invasion, though Grotto-heaven formation nodes preserved smaller protective formations around key sites 342 343.
- Grotto-heavens — Incorporated into formation nodes and used to protect important locations when the main protection formation collapsed 343.
- Identity tokens — Allow fellow disciples in the same realm to communicate and locate sect outposts; they were also used during the invasion to distinguish sect members from enemies 294 345.
- Command and entry-exit tokens — Permit authorized movement through the sect's Immortal City and teleportation network during periods of lockdown 341 345.
- Five Peaks True Form Diagram — A Spirit Treasure temporarily used above the sect as an emergency defensive measure after the protection formation was compromised 346.
- Ascension Platform — An artifact likely inherited through the Taibai Sword Sect and controlled by Tianlan Sect; its existence became a major source of pressure from rival powers 662.
Relationships
- Patriarch Zhiyang and Patriarch Qiongyue — Founding patriarchs and creators of the sect's core lineage 35.
- Ling Taichu — A leading Tianlan Sect True Monarch, Fang Xiao's master, and a central defender during the Battle of Tianlan 330 346.
- Yi Tianhe — Sect Master during the Battle of Tianlan; coordinated the sect's defense from the True Spirit Hall and later abdicated 330 343 647.
- Fang Xiao — Disciple whose actions exposed plots, protected True Inheritors, killed the Xuanyuan sleeper agent Xu Jinzhong, and secured Yan Tiandong's aid during the Battle of Tianlan 345.
- Yan Tiandong — Guest elder whose Deity Transformation strength helped reverse the Three Sects' invasion; his son Yuan Chen joined Tianlan Sect 319 341 345.
- Five Elements Sect — Longtime ally supported by Tianlan Sect when it lacked Deity Transformation cultivators; later joined the invasion but was driven out and subsequently became subordinate to Tianlan Sect's side 295 345 661.

- Beimíng Sword Sect — Close ally; its relationship with the Beast Taming Sect also links it to Tianlan Sect's alliance network 382 661.
- Xuanyuan Sect — Enemy responsible for inciting the family-lineage betrayal, planting Xu Jinzhong, and supplying the Nine Yuan Heart Extinguishing Array; Tianlan Sect resolved to annihilate it 342 346.
- Nanhua Sect — Invading enemy during the Battle of Tianlan; its attacking force was annihilated by Yan Tiandong 345.
- Lietian Sword Sect — Initially a cautious contact and potential rival over the Taibai Sword Sect, later an ally 381 382 661.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Recruitment and early sect life
Tianlan Sect recruits new disciples through aptitude testing. Fang Xiao entered after revealing an Earth-Metal Mutually Generating Spiritual Root and began cultivation as part of the sect's disciple body 1 3.
Fang Xiao formally became an inner disciple after paying respects to the statues of Patriarch Zhiyang and Patriarch Qiongyue 35.
Taibai Ruins and South Sea operations
The sect entrusted Fang Xiao with a Taibai Token and a mission connected to the Taibai Sword Sect's destruction, its surviving inheritance, and the Nine Heavens Divine Fiend Sword Light 37.
Its South Sea outposts provided Fang Xiao with intelligence about changes in the Eastern Domain and the Five Elements Sect's renewed Deity Transformation support 294 295.
Battle of Tianlan
The sect uncovered a plot by its family lineage and outside Holy Lands to destroy it during the True Inheritance Grand Competition 304 316.
The conflict escalated into open rebellion, infiltration of the Teleportation Hall, and the collapse of the main sect protection formation. Yi Tianhe ordered all available disciples to assemble at the Thirty-Seven Peaks and resist the invaders 329 342 343.
Fang Xiao and Yan Tiandong returned through the void, retook the Teleportation Hall, killed Xu Jinzhong, and restored the sect's ability to counterattack. Yan Tiandong annihilated the Nanhua Sect's invading force, while Tianlan Sect forces drove out the Five Elements Sect and encircled the Xuanyuan Sect 344 345.
Postwar consolidation
Following the battle, Tianlan Sect used the Five Peaks True Form Diagram to cover the loss of its damaged protection formation while rebuilding its defenses 346.
It expanded its political position through alliances and control of major inheritances, including the Taibai Sword Sect's formation core and the Ascension Platform 389 662.
Later expansion
Tianlan Sect supported Fang Xiao's establishment of the Nine Heavens Demon Purge Sect, providing resources and permitting the use of the Heart Questioning Mirror for its entrance assessment. Ling Taichu regarded the new sect as important to Tianlan Sect and the Beimíng Sword Sect 793.
By the time Fang Xiao prepared to depart, Tianlan Sect and Beimíng Sword Sect had rapidly produced Deity Transformation cultivators, though this progress severely strained their resources and lower-level disciples 828.
Trivia
- The sect's Holy Son and Holy Maiden are selected by spiritual-root attribute rather than combat strength: one fire-attribute and one water-attribute Heavenly Spiritual Root disciple 35.
- The True Spirit Hall originally had thirty-three seats; during the Battle of Tianlan, this increased to thirty-seven, though more than thirty percent were vacant after losses and purges 340.
- Fang Xiao continued to identify himself as a Tianlan Sect member even after ascending from the lower realm and being invited to join the Xuanling Sect in the Spirit Realm 864.
