Background

Forest of Death and the Konoha invasion

Orochimaru enters the Chūnin Exams seeking to assassinate Hiruzen Sarutobi and secure an ideal vessel. He had already chosen Sasuke as his preferred body, but Naruto's abnormal performance draws his attention as well 40.

Disguised as a woman during his first encounter with Team Seven, Orochimaru confronts Sasuke and Sakura while Naruto is separated by a summoned giant python. Sasuke severs his arm during their opening exchange, but Orochimaru's ability to shed and replace his body makes the injury inconsequential 37.

He places Naruto under the same Curse Mark previously given to Anko, despite the mark carrying only a one-in-ten survival chance. Orochimaru considers Naruto promising, but still ranks Sasuke's Sharingan as the more desirable prize 40.

During Konoha's invasion, Orochimaru and Root ambush Hiruzen in the Hokage Building. Their battle leaves Orochimaru's hands severely damaged, creating his later need for Tsunade's medical assistance 90 131.

Tsunade and Naruto
