Background / History

Tsunade arrives in the gambling district of Tanzaku Street with Shizune and Tonton. After briefly winning at a slot machine, she loses her winnings and seeks out Yamei, whose undefeated streak has earned him the name “God of Gamblers” 87 88. She agrees to teach him medical ninjutsu in exchange for gambling instruction. Yamei studies her medical books and acquires the Yin Seal and Creation Rebirth; he also uses genjutsu to treat her hemophobia 90 91 92 93.

Following Hiruzen Sarutobi’s death, Tsunade returns to Konoha to become the Fifth Hokage. She is critical of the former leadership and resolves to reform the village 106. On her return, she takes charge at the site of an explosion in the Shimura compound. When Sasuke emerges with Danzō’s body and declares his intention to leave Konoha, she moves to apprehend him 107 108. Yamei intervenes; Tsunade then offers him a position as Konoha’s junior elder, but he refuses to return 109.

Later, as the Small Nations Federation expands, Tsunade tells Yamei that the Land of Fire’s Daimyō has ordered Konoha to attack it. She opposes initiating the attack and discusses the possibility of a peaceful agreement with him 161. She subsequently agrees to cooperate with Shisui on unification matters 253.

Tsunade has blonde hair and wears a gray outfit beneath a long green coat marked with the character for “gambling” on its back 87.

Personality

Tsunade is a persistent gambler despite repeated losses and Shizune’s warnings. She approaches the celebrated “God of Gamblers” hoping to learn how to win, and remains eager to return to the casino even after her time with Yamei 88 93. Her exchanges with him are often teasing or argumentative 89 215.

As Hokage, she is direct with Konoha’s senior officials and determined to prevent further injustice in the village 106 109. She also values personal bonds: Shizune’s well-being matters to her, and she warmly embraces Kushina when Yamei brings her back 215 266.
