Konoha and Akatsuki became entangled in a widening war as Akatsuki seized control of several countries and Konoha prepared to fight Iwagakure. The volume ended with Ōnoki facing Fugaku as the two armies clashed.

Arc 17The Two-Tails Alliance

Mito died after Kushina and Minato became the Nine-Tails’ jinchuriki, while Kawafune’s group prepared for the coming war. Kumogakure gave the Two-Tails to Akatsuki in exchange for an alliance, and Nagato began confronting the beast after bringing it back to the Land of Rain.

  • Misaki discovered she was pregnant, and Mito asked Misaki and Kushina to choose whether either would host the Nine-Tails.
  • Kushina agreed to become the Nine-Tails’ jinchuriki, and Mito, Orochimaru, and Jiraiya developed the Spirit Division Seal so the beast’s Chakra could be split between Kushina and Minato.
  • Kawafune and Fugaku divided the Nine-Tails’ Chakra, and Tsunade and Orochimaru sealed the halves inside Kushina and Minato.
  • Mito said goodbye to her family and died, and Kawafune arranged her burial beside Hashirama.
  • Yahiko and Nagato negotiated with Fourth Raikage A, and Kumogakure agreed to give Akatsuki the Two-Tails in exchange for its support in war.
  • Nagato and Kakuzu collected the Two-Tails from Kumogakure and returned to the Land of Rain with it sealed in a black jar.

Arc 18War in the Land of Earth

Nagato’s Akatsuki Hidden Village joined Kumogakure in invading the Land of Earth, while Konoha debated whether to intervene and eventually sent reinforcements. Minato and the wounded Rōshi and Kitsuchi faced Nagato, leaving Minato alone to confront him.

  • Nagato subdued the Two-Tails, and Kumogakure later asked Akatsuki Hidden Village to join its attack on the Land of Earth.
  • Tsunade chose to keep Konoha out of the war, while Kawafune agreed that Kakashi and Ginji could follow Minato to the battlefield.
  • Nagato’s forces invaded the Land of Earth as Ōnoki sent Rōshi and Kitsuchi to oppose them, while Third Raikage A led Kumogakure’s fleet into the conflict.
  • Ōnoki and Third Raikage A fought as Fourth Raikage A and Killer B killed Han and the Five-Tails Kokuō, after which Ōnoki retreated and asked Konoha for aid.
  • Tsunade accepted Ōnoki’s request and sent Nawaki and Minato with reinforcements, while Nawaki’s group went to find Ōnoki and Minato stayed with Rōshi and Kitsuchi.

Arc 19Madara Falls, Akatsuki Rises

Kawafune killed Madara, rescued Obito, and brought Madara’s body and weapons back to Konoha for study while Akatsuki expanded its influence. Nagato and the Akatsuki defeated the Mist forces, killing Karatachi Yagura and Aoki Shin, and left the Land of Water as their likely next target.

  • Minato and Nagato staged a retreat after the battle, then Minato led the wounded Rōshi and Kitsuchi to a concealed camp while Nawaki joined Ōnoki’s forces against the Cloud Ninja.
  • Nawaki helped Ōnoki repel Third Raikage A and defeated Fourth Raikage A and Killer B before Ōnoki rescued them, then received a Golems Technique scroll.
  • Zetsu abducted the injured Obito, but Kawafune tracked them to Madara’s cave, learned about the Eye of the Moon Plan, and killed Madara in battle.
  • Kawafune returned Obito to Minato and brought Madara’s body, weapons, Sharingan, and White Zetsu to Konoha for Orochimaru and Tsunade to study.
  • Kawafune instructed Yahiko to expand Akatsuki’s control over nearby countries while sparing civilians, and Akatsuki seized the Land of Grass, the Land of Rivers, and the Land of Birds.
  • Yahiko, Konan, and Kakuzu wiped out Mist Ninja spies in the Land of Rice Fields, prompting Karatachi Yagura to lead the Mist forces into battle against Nagato’s Akatsuki.
  • Nagato defeated Isobu and drained Karatachi Yagura until his Tailed Beast form collapsed, then killed him, while Kakuzu killed Aoki Shin before the Six-Tails could go berserk.

Arc 20War in the Land of Earth

Yahiko secured the Land of Water for Akatsuki while Konoha prepared to confront Iwagakure. Fugaku killed the Four-Tails Jinchuriki, and the Konoha and Rock forces began their battle with Ōnoki facing Fugaku.

  • Yahiko accepted the Land of Hot Water Daimyo’s request to protect the country, then led Akatsuki into the Land of Water and secured Kirigakure and its capital after Genji agreed to surrender.
  • Minato and Nawaki withdrew Konoha’s forces from Ōnoki’s campaign, and Kawafune arranged for Fugaku and Might Duy to lead Konoha’s expedition against the Land of Earth.
  • Fugaku demanded Rōshi from Ōnoki, but Rōshi fled the Rock Ninja camp, prompting Fugaku and Ōnoki to pursue him into the Land of Waterfalls.
  • Fugaku defeated Rōshi after awakening his Mangekyo Sharingan and using Susanoo and Amaterasu, while Ōnoki arrived too late to stop him.
  • Ōnoki returned to Iwagakure without Rōshi and rallied the Rock Ninja for war, assigning himself to face Fugaku and Kitsuchi to face Might Duy.
  • Fugaku returned to the Konoha camp exhausted from using his Mangekyo Sharingan, then led the Konoha forces toward the Rock Ninja camp.
  • Konoha and the Rock Ninja exchanged opening attacks, and the Uchiha charged into the fighting as Ōnoki confronted Fugaku in the air.
