History

War and Hanzo’s leadership

The Land of Rain lies between the Lands of Fire, Earth, and Wind. During the Ninja World War, their invasions turned it into a battlefield; Amegakure’s shinobi resisted the invading forces 2. Led by Hanzo of the Salamander, the village survived repeated attempts by larger villages to conquer it. Konoha, Sunagakure, and Iwagakure also competed with one another for control of its territory 10.

Akatsuki’s rise divided the Land of Rain’s armed political power. Its members wore Amegakure headbands but did not obey Hanzo, while recruiting young people who might otherwise join the village 8 14. Asuka, Hanzo’s granddaughter, sought to recruit Amakawa Mingren as a source of support for Amegakure’s younger generation 12 36.

Occupation and recovery

Hanzo declared war on Konoha, Sunagakure, and Iwagakure 73. A subsequent joint attack left him severely injured, depleted Amegakure’s elite forces, and led to Asuka’s capture 75. Konoha and Sunagakure then occupied the village and sought to turn it into a dependent ally. Hanzo was secretly evacuated, while Asuka remained under guard 84 104.

Asuka called Amegakure’s shinobi to resist the occupation. With Pakura’s support, they defeated, captured, or drove out the remaining occupiers and reclaimed the village’s sovereignty 110 115. Asuka became acting village leader during reconstruction, supported by Mingren 116 117. Konoha and Sunagakure later pressured the Land of Rain’s daimyo to cut off Amegakure’s funding and supplies 120 121.

Expansion under Mingren

Mingren consolidated control of Amegakure and incorporated Hidden Sky Village’s willing remaining forces, fleet, and Aerial Fortress Ankbandian 182 183. The village subsequently expanded its buildings and defenses. Asuka directed major sealing and barrier projects, including a village-wide Spherical Sensory Barrier powered by Ankbandian 226 254.

After the Konoha-hosted Chunin Exam ended with the deaths of the Hokage and Kazekage, Mingren announced his intention to become Emperor of a Land of Rain–led pan-alliance 371. Amegakure later served as the center of that expanding alliance, which included a vassal agreement with Rougakure 406 418. Following the allied forces’ victory over Konoha, Amegakure’s administration took over the Land of Fire and began building a new city on Konoha’s ruins 532 537.

City and Infrastructure

• Setting — A steel city built upon the water in the perpetually rainy Land of Rain 2 49.
• Original cityscape — Densely packed buildings, crowded streets, and extensive ditches, sewers, and waterways 49.
• Later redevelopment — High-rises, light-colored exteriors, extensive glasswork, skybridges, neon lighting, and large public screens transformed it into a modern metropolis 292 447 566.
• Central Tower — A longstanding village landmark, later rebuilt as a structure dozens of stories high 49 315.
• Black Tower — A heavily guarded, windowless building associated with Amegakure’s ANBU and Mingren’s work 402 413 447.

Defenses and Resources

• Spherical Sensory Barrier — Envelops the village above and below ground, detecting intruders throughout its range. Asuka cast it using Ankbandian’s chakra supply 254 315.
• Aerial Fortress Ankbandian — Acquired with Hidden Sky Village’s forces; it hovers above Amegakure and supplies power for village projects 182 194 254 303.
• Chakra Armor — Mingren approved a prototype intended for mass production for Amegakure’s ninja 225 226.
• Teleportation Matrix — Ajisai’s team developed a Flying Thunder God–based transport system powered by Ankbandian. Its first planned route connected Amegakure with New Konoha, and an initial test teleported a kunai successfully 563 566 567.
• ANBU — Amegakure maintains its own ANBU, including personnel assigned to surveillance and security 312 406.
• Trade income — An international shipping business established from the former Gato Corporation brought substantial funds to Amegakure and the Land of Rain 330.

Leadership and Notable Members

• Hanzo of the Salamander — Amegakure’s longtime leader, known as the Demigod. After years in a coma, he recovered and returned to the transformed village 10 314 315.
• Amakawa Mingren — Took control of Amegakure, directed its expansion, and later declared himself Emperor of the Land of Rain–led alliance 258 335 371.
• Asuka — Hanzo’s granddaughter; led the resistance to occupation, served as acting village leader, and later held authority as the village’s second leader 110 116 481.
• Pakura — Helped retake Amegakure and later served in its leadership and defense 115 290 527.
• Ying — Mingren’s disciple and an Amegakure ninja; became a prominent public performer and defeated Pakura in a duel 297 314 418.

Relations with Other Villages

• Akatsuki — Originated in the Land of Rain and initially rivaled Hanzo’s authority. Negotiations considered coexistence or Akatsuki’s absorption into Amegakure, but the two remained separate powers 8 14 74 183.
• Konoha and Sunagakure — Sought influence over Amegakure, jointly occupied it, and later remained major opponents of Mingren’s village 10 84 115 187.
• Iwagakure — Historically competed for Amegakure’s territory and was later approached by Konoha about a joint operation against it 10 183 187.
• Kirigakure — Signed a truce with Amegakure, but did not immediately follow it with an alliance 287 306.
• Rougakure — Joined the Amegakure Alliance through a vassal-state agreement after requesting aid 406 418.
