Physical Nature and Geography
The Chaos Sea is a spherical world carried by the River of Time. Its surface contains an immense ocean and numerous continents, including the Nine Heavens Ten Earths; the world is protected from the outside by a barrier capable of resisting an Outer Void Realm entity’s initial intrusion attempts 841 826 937.
Its space is permeated by flowing Dao Principles, the foundational forces of the world. Cultivators perceive and wield these Principles through Dao-based cultivation, unlike the nearby Sea of Blood world, which possesses no Dao Principles at all 796.
Native creatures can possess special bloodlines that naturally grant Dao power as they mature, even without the intelligence or cultivation needed to comprehend Dao Principles themselves. An Enlightenment Realm strange fish is capable of matching an Enlightenment Realm cultivator in strength 544.
Notable Regions
| Location | Description |
|---|---|
| Nine Heavens Ten Earths | The major celestial and terrestrial regions of the Chaos Sea; skyships carry goods and living beings between them when teleportation is unsuitable 594. |
| Flame Sea Heaven | A blessed land consisting entirely of an endless ocean of flame. It is administered by an alliance of loose forces rather than a single great clan 670. |
| Flowing Wave Island | Formed from the corpse of a World-Ending Black Dragon defeated during an ancient war. It is rich in Dao Blood Stone, a black ore with blood-red internal patterns 612. |
| Rakshasa Islands | The source of a Great Dao fluctuation that drew Dao Integration Realm experts from across the Chaos Sea 788. |
| Heavenly Mystery Island | A hidden island invisible to spiritual sense and Dao Principle detection, though visible to the naked eye. It houses the Chaos Sea’s foremost divination force 818. |
Inhabitants and Civilization
- The Chaos Sea contains countless races, with individual continents potentially supporting billions of living beings 706.
- Territorial sovereignty is taken extremely seriously: entering another race’s territory without notice is commonly treated as an invasion or declaration of war 768.
- Before the Nine Heavens Ten Earths were discovered, the Human Race occupied most of the Chaos Sea and developed the original cultivation path. Some accounts hold that humans were outsiders, while spiritual races were the original inhabitants 721.
- The Divine Beast Clan has remained influential throughout recorded Chaos Sea history due to its long lifespans, powerful bodies, and widespread innate cultivation talent 538.
- The Chaos Sea’s economy includes Spirit Nurturing Pearls, which are valuable enough that entry to a pleasure pavilion can cost ten pearls; auction lots can sell for billions or more 546 564.
- Major powers have historically acquired anomalous artifacts and technologies from beyond the Chaos Sea, including the Myriad Treasures Pavilion, Wraith Clan, Golden Body Clan, and Dragon Clan 776.
World Will and Survival
The Chaos Sea’s World Will initially functions largely through survival instinct. A world can escape the River of Time only if it gains an Inner Void Realm cultivator capable of moving it, or if its World Will develops sentience, reincarnates, and reaches the Inner Void Realm itself 841.
Prime Minister Zhang was ultimately confirmed as that reincarnated World Will. Eight hundred years after Shen Lin’s departure, he merged with every Great Dao in the Chaos Sea and became its Dao Lord 842 929.
A future vision showed the Chaos Sea escaping the Epochal End by moving against the flow of the River of Time. The same vision warned that another world, led by the Void Insectoid Race, would invade the Chaos Sea 841.
Major Crises
The End
Heavenly Mystery Island’s calculations revealed the approach of “The End,” prompting Dao Integration Realm experts throughout the Chaos Sea to converge on the Rakshasa Islands 788.
A later vision showed the Nine Heavens Ten Earths in ruin, with only two continents remaining and the world seemingly stripped of life and Great Dao power 840.
Collector Invasion
The Collector, an Outer Void Realm entity, reached the Chaos Sea and attempted to force passages through its world barrier with dozens of tentacles. The barrier destroyed many tentacles, leaving only five viable openings 826.
The Collector sent Saint Realm puppets through the passages to stabilize them from within. Two passages immediately lost contact after their servants entered the world 826.
Its long-term method was to establish an internal foothold, drain a world’s fortune power through ritual, and harvest the world completely 826.
Ant King and Wugui
The Collector deployed the Ant King, an Insectoid Race creation missing one Great Dao Power and kept under the Collector’s control to prevent it from reaching the Outer Void Realm. The Ant King’s awakening spread primal fear and destructive phenomena throughout the Chaos Sea 868.
The arrival of Wugui, the Collector’s Grand Commander, caused the entire Chaos Sea to tremble. Wugui carried World-Destroying Malevolence gained by killing a mature World Will 856.
Shen Lin used himself as bait to lure the Ant King through a wormhole and out of the Chaos Sea, forcing the Collector to pursue rather than immediately consume the world 871.
Void Insectoid Invasion
A thousand years after Shen Lin’s departure, the Void Insectoid Race invaded with two Inner Void Realm beings. The race can devour worlds and Great Dao power, storing the resources in a Mother Nest to create powerful soldiers 930.
Prime Minister Zhang held back the invading Inner Void Realm entities while the Chaos Sea’s races fought on the main battlefield 930.
Shen Lin returned during the crisis and instantly destroyed one Inner Void Realm Insect Mother, restoring hope to the defending races 930 931.
Relocation
After defeating the invading forces, Shen Lin used Cosmic Realm power to lift the Chaos Sea world upward within the River of Time. Unlike ordinary Inner Void Realm or Cosmic Realm beings, he could cross the world barrier without tearing the world apart 937.
Shen Lin later assigned one of his time clones to move the Chaos Sea toward the Myriad Realms Association alongside the Qiankun World 946.
