Background / History

Konoha is depicted as a busy, peaceful-looking shinobi village in its 51st year, with returning mission teams, shops, izakayas, and the Hokage Rock overlooking the settlement. The faces of its first four Hokage are carved into the monument; Hiruzen Sarutobi had resumed office after the Fourth Hokage's death during the Nine-Tails attack. 1

The village's post-Nine-Tails politics are marked by distrust. Konoha's leadership relocates the Uchiha clan to the outskirts and places it under strict surveillance because Obito Uchiha had controlled the Nine-Tails. The resulting humiliation intensifies internal Uchiha radicalism and contributes to a planned coup. 5

Konoha also fails Naruto Uzumaki socially during his childhood. Cloud Village diplomatic crisis

Konoha becomes embroiled in a crisis after a Kumogakure delegation attempts to abduct Hinata Hyuga and is stopped by Hiashi Hyuga. Kumogakure demands compensation and threatens war, while Konoha's leadership considers sacrificing Hizashi Hyuga to protect the Byakugan's secrets. 9 22

The situation worsens after the masked “Menma” attacks Kumogakure forces and abducts Hizashi. Kumogakure accuses Konoha of secretly supporting the attacker, prompting the Fourth Raikage to enter the Land of Fire with an elite force and confront Konoha's leadership. 26 27

Uchiha clan crisis

Konoha's long-standing surveillance and exclusion of the Uchiha clan contribute to growing resentment and coup preparations. Hiruzen attempts to use Naruto and Satsuki's friendship as an opportunity for the clan to rebuild trust with the village, while Danzō opposes any Uchiha connection to the Nine-Tails jinchūriki. 15 55

The Uchiha are later nearly annihilated. Danzō's involvement in human experimentation, theft of Hashirama's cells, attacks on Uchiha comrades, and collaboration with Orochimaru becomes public knowledge, shifting much public outrage toward his crimes. 107 116

Otogakure and Sunagakure launch a coordinated assault during the Chunin Exams. Sound and Sand shinobi attack throughout Konoha, Orochimaru confronts Hiruzen on the arena roof, and Shukaku emerges in the village itself. 268 270 273

Naruto helps prevent Konoha's destruction by redirecting Shukaku's Tailed Beast Ball with Flying Thunder God: Guiding Thunder, then seeks to draw Shukaku away from the village to avoid devastating collateral damage. 273 274

Restoration and leadership transition

Following the invasion, Hiruzen survives but recognizes the need for a successor. Jiraiya is inaugurated as the Fifth Hokage, while Naruto is promoted directly to jōnin and becomes Jiraiya's disciple. 370

Jiraiya later publicly confirms Naruto's parentage, and Naruto moves into Minato and Kushina's former home. Konoha's public reception of Naruto changes dramatically, with crowds celebrating him as the Fourth Hokage's son and a village hero. 374
