Background / History

Founding Konoha and Growing Isolation

The Uchiha joined the Senju in establishing Konoha. Shisui later compares the clan’s early integration into that village with its new life in Uzushio, questioning how the original harmony deteriorated 91 94.

Madara defected during the First Hokage’s era. In a later confrontation, Tobirama attributes his decision to give the Uchiha the Military Police Force to Madara’s rebellion and Setsuna Uchiha’s attack on the Hokage Building 46 318.

After Nine-Tails Night, the clan compound was relocated to a corner of Konoha. Its area increased, but its distance from the bustling districts deepened the clansmen’s dissatisfaction. The district also came under Anbu surveillance 31 94.

The clan’s police duties isolated it from ordinary villagers, while the Hokage faction encouraged resentment toward the Uchiha. Funding cuts, discrimination, and the consequences of the Nine-Tails Incident contributed to the desire for a coup 94 220 251.

The Coup and Sharingan Theft

Fugaku regarded a coup as the clan’s final means of securing the standing and benefits he believed it deserved. The leadership wanted an Uchiha Hokage and was unwilling to relinquish control of the Military Police Force 36.

Shisui sought reconciliation, but Danzo ambushed him and stole one Mangekyō eye. Shisui escaped Root’s pursuit using Susanoo, only to conclude that returning injured would further inflame the clan. His subsequent disappearance temporarily undermined the coup and brought suspicion upon Itachi 40 42.

Naruto and Shisui later infiltrated Naka Shrine and overheard renewed coup preparations. The plan included seizing Naruto to exploit the Nine-Tails and using Sasuke to gain his favor. They stole the clan’s stored Sharingan, which Shisui intended to preserve for a future outside Konoha 53.

Fugaku suspected Itachi of the theft but concealed it to avoid damaging morale. As the final pre-coup meeting approached, the clan waited for Itachi’s Mangekyō power; Itachi instead disclosed the plan to Konoha High Command and offered to stop the rebellion himself 54 63.

Uchiha Night and Evacuation

Shisui returned, took control of the clan, and announced its withdrawal from Konoha. Obito attacked the Military Police Force while Itachi carried out the operation against the compound. Returning Uchiha ninja found murdered evacuation guards and other clansmen, including Izumi’s mother 65 68 69.

Shisui confronted Itachi and fought to buy time for the evacuation. More than half the clan escaped under his leadership, preventing the intended extermination 70 72 73.

Fugaku and Mikoto attempted suicide during Itachi’s confrontation with the family. Mikoto survived and was later saved by Naruto. Sasuke remained in Konoha, separated from the surviving clan 70 74 284.

Konoha’s public account presented Sasuke as the sole survivor and Itachi as the culprit. Knowledge of the refugees’ settlement in the Land of Whirlpools circulated through black-market intelligence instead 215.

Rebuilding in Uzushio Village

Shisui sought Naruto’s protection and advice after the escape. Naruto treated the wounded for a substantial fee and suggested the Land of Whirlpools as a new home 74.

The survivors helped rebuild Uzushio Village. Rather than living exclusively as police officers, they participated in production and construction alongside other residents. Shisui observed that this work helped them form friendly relationships and recover hope 88 94.

Their new position also allowed Uchiha to become high-ranking officials. Naruto’s strength protected the settlement from factions interested in the clan’s bloodline, while Shisui helped administer village affairs and advocated establishing a Ninja Academy and mission center 88 89 97 155.

Public Disclosure and Itachi’s Trial

Shisui later appeared before Konoha’s ninja and publicly acknowledged that the Uchiha had planned a coup. He also exposed Danzo’s ambush, Itachi’s orders to slaughter the clan, and the Third Hokage’s favoritism and inaction. Kakashi confirmed that Konoha’s higher-ups had approved and guided Uchiha Night 251 252.

Naruto subsequently demanded the return of the clan compound. Jiraiya agreed, acknowledging Konoha’s wrongdoing 254.

After Sasuke defeated Itachi, Naruto prevented Itachi from escaping responsibility through suicide and declared that his fate belonged to all the families he had harmed. The brothers returned to the Uchiha settlement, where Sasuke reunited with Mikoto after seven years 283 284.

At the clan meeting, Shisui chose Izanami as Itachi’s punishment, intending to force him to recognize and admit his mistakes. Itachi remained trapped in the genjutsu loop afterward 285 286.
