Background / History

Attempt to prevent the Uchiha coup

Shisui initially believed completely in the Will of Fire and sought peaceful coexistence between Konoha and the Uchiha. As a Konoha Anbu and Itachi Uchiha's close friend, he intended to secretly reshape Fugaku Uchiha's will with Kotoamatsukami, believing that controlling the clan head would stop the planned coup without bloodshed. 38 39 251

Danzō rejected Shisui's plan and ambushed him through Root, taking his right Mangekyō Sharingan. Shisui escaped the encirclement by activating a half-bodied emerald Susanoo and its Ninety-Nine Chakra-arrow barrage, but was left badly injured and unable to intervene in the clan's crisis. 40

Expecting to die, Shisui planned to entrust his remaining eye and ideals to Itachi. Naruto instead deceived, defeated, and imprisoned him, taking the remaining Kotoamatsukami eye for himself. 41 43

Captivity and changed ideals

While imprisoned, Shisui learned that his previous “death” had only delayed the Uchiha coup. Naruto also discovered that Shisui had previously used Kotoamatsukami on himself, altering his own will, actions, and memories. Losing the influence of his dōjutsu forced Shisui to confront the gap between his ideals and reality. 44 51

After receiving replacement Three-Tomoe Sharingan, Shisui returned to Konoha under a disguise. He investigated the clan from the perspective of ordinary members, uncovered two logistics spies reporting to Danzō, and found that many Uchiha did not truly support a coup. He formed a hidden faction dedicated to leaving Konoha instead. 54 55

Leading the Uchiha out of Konoha

Shisui publicly reappeared at a clan meeting and established his identity through his distinctive Body Flicker Technique and overwhelming genjutsu. He declared his intention to lead the Uchiha away from Konoha rather than pursue the Hokage seat. 65

When Obito attacked on the day of the coup, Shisui recognized him as the likely culprit behind the Nine-Tails’ Rampage and changed the operation from a coup into an evacuation. Although Itachi killed many clansmen before the departure could be completed, Shisui led the survivors out of Konoha and openly broke with his former friend. 69 70 72

Uzushio Village

After the withdrawal, Shisui sought Naruto’s protection and guidance for the displaced Uchiha. Naruto proposed the Land of Whirlpools as their new homeland, where the clan ultimately settled in Uzushio Village. 74

His imprisonment, loss of his eyes, and discovery of Konoha’s betrayal fundamentally change him. Shisui becomes more cautious, pragmatic, and willing to use force or genjutsu to secure the Uchiha’s survival.
