Chapter 42: Sally's Father's Former Teammates
"Welcome, adventurers."
At the village entrance, Village Chief Kenny, his aged face beaming with enthusiasm, stepped forward and clasped the hand of one of the adventurers, showing his warmth and welcome.
"Greetings, Village Chief. My name is Lester, and these are my squad members. Also, from the letter we asked the Adventurer's Guild to deliver to you, I believe you understand why we've come."
After speaking, Lester, with his long, gaunt, and gloomy face, forced a smile. However, paired with his one-eyed appearance, it looked incredibly awkward. The adventurers behind him quickly put on smiles as well.
"I know, I know. Chris was once a member of Lord Lester's squad. You've come to visit Chris's child, Sally, and intend to give Sally the item that Chris entrusted you to keep!"
Hearing Lester's words, Kenny's smile grew even warmer. His slightly narrowed eyes made him look like a truly benevolent old man. The Chris he mentioned was Sally's deceased father.
"It seems you're already well aware, Village Chief. Then I won't say any more. Please call out Chris's child immediately so we can give her the item Chris left with us. After all, we are adventurers, and we have a mission."
Lester looked at the enthusiastic Kenny before him, a flicker of mockery in his eyes. He then put on an anxious expression and scanned the village, as if he were truly in a hurry as he claimed.
"This... that..."
The next second, Kenny, who had been incredibly enthusiastic moments before, began to look shifty. He nervously clutched his clothes, his voice becoming hesitant.
"What? Don't you trust us!?"
Looking at Kenny, Lester's remaining eye narrowed slightly, and his entire demeanor turned grim. The adventurers behind him also looked over, their hands resting on their weapons.
"No... no, how could I deceive you, Lord Lester? It's just... it's just..."
Kenny trembled, shakily lifting his head, looking utterly terrified. He stammered, but due to his extreme fear, he couldn't articulate clearly.
"Just what? Old man, you'd better hurry up and say it!"
The next moment, a large hand grabbed Kenny. An adventurer standing behind Lester had long been utterly annoyed by Captain Lester's slow-paced plan. It was just an ordinary village; why not just charge in and snatch the person? Why pretend like this and waste time?
"Gene, stop!"
Just as Kenny's face turned purple and his body began to twitch, Lester's gloomy voice rang out. Adventurer Gene, who was tightly gripping Kenny, hesitated for a few seconds before unhappily throwing Kenny to the ground.
Watching Kenny gasp for air, his face a mask of pure terror and fear, and the surrounding villagers who dared not speak out, Gene spat on the ground and walked away in annoyance.
"Village Chief Kenny, as you can see, my teammates are not as easygoing as I am. So, can we see Sally now?"
Lester crouched in front of Kenny, a false smile on his face as he spoke slowly. However, his eyes were so grim they inspired fear. It was clear Lester was growing impatient.
"Please wait a moment, esteemed adventurers. Sally went to a nearby town with Grandma Oran, who adopted her, not long ago. However, I promise, you will be able to see Sally the day after tomorrow at the latest."
Looking at Lester's grim face, Kenny scrambled to his feet and fell before Lester, quickly revealing Sally's whereabouts. He loudly promised that he would bring Sally to meet them the day after tomorrow at the latest.
"Oh! Is that so? Then we will temporarily believe you, Village Chief. I trust you won't disappoint us, will you?"
Saying this, Lester turned his head and surveyed the surrounding villagers. Then, with a smile, he looked back at Kenny. The meaning was clear.
"Of course, of course! I promise, you will definitely see Sally the day after tomorrow, esteemed adventurers!"
Kenny nodded vigorously, his eyes pleading with Lester, looking utterly terrified of death.
"Very well. Then you have two days. But remember, if you don't see Sally in two days, you understand the consequences."
"Yes, yes, yes, we understand, we understand!"
Saying this, Kenny quickly got up from the ground and waved to a watching villager, telling him to lead the esteemed adventurers to a vacant house in the village to rest well and prepare food for them.
In response to Kenny's order, the villager gave him a deep look. Out of decades of respect and trust for Kenny, he didn't say anything more, simply leading the adventurers away.
"Village Chief."
After the adventurers left, Oster, who had been guarding the village's watchtower, rushed over, wanting to question why Kenny hadn't told the adventurers that Sally was in the woods not far outside the village. However, he was stopped by Kenny as soon as he spoke.
"Oster, you don't need to say any more. I know what you want to say, but you also know what kind of people Chris's former teammates are. If they knew Sally's location, what would happen? I don't need to tell you, do I?"
Kenny stared intently at Oster. He knew that those adventurers were indeed Sally's father Chris's teammates. However, after Grandma Oran brought Sally back, the villagers knew some of what had happened to Sally.
It was precisely because of this that after Grandma Oran died, although they drove Sally out of the village, they didn't expel her from the area. Even when Sally saved those slimes, the villagers subconsciously chose to ignore it.
"But if we don't hand Sally over to them, those adventurers will definitely kill us!"
Oster braced himself against Kenny's sharp, knife-like gaze and gritted his teeth as he voiced his thoughts. After Oster spoke, the nearby villagers also murmured in agreement. After all, while they sympathized with Sally, they would never sacrifice their lives for her.
Of course, if they were truly willing to give their lives for Sally, they wouldn't have driven Sally out of the village out of fear after Grandma Oran died.
Kenny scanned the crowd. Most of the villagers he looked at lowered their heads, but a few stubbornly stared at Kenny. In their minds, exchanging Sally, a mere half-human, half-monster, for their own lives was a fantastic deal.
"Leave this to me. I will resolve everything!"
Seeing the villagers like this, Kenny sighed inwardly. Compared to those adventurers, Sally now had a more terrifying existence by her side. Just as Kenny was about to say more, his expression suddenly changed, and his gaze involuntarily drifted in a certain direction.
He looked up at the villagers before him, told them he would handle everything, and then turned and walked into the village.
