Background

Madara and Hashirama Senju grew up during the Warring States Era, when shinobi children were sent to battle and clans survived as hired mercenaries. They shared the goal of ending that age and founded Konoha together, but Madara opposed Hashirama's eventual one-country, one-village system. After witnessing three later Shinobi World Wars, he concluded that the system had failed to create lasting peace 154 254.

He committed himself to the Eye of the Moon Plan, believing it could create a peaceful dream world where reality had failed. To set the plan in motion, he manipulated Obito Uchiha by arranging Rin Nohara's death through a curse seal and the Three-Tails; Obito subsequently operated under Madara's name 55 247.

Madara believed Black Zetsu to be a creation of his own will, but Naruto exposed Black Zetsu as Kaguya Ōtsutsuki's creation and revealed that Madara himself had been cultivated as a pawn for Kaguya's resurrection 249 250.

Madara is a long-haired man most prominently seen in red ninja armor, though he also adopts plain black robes and disguises while operating for Wave Country 217 281.

His relationship with Hashirama remains central to his identity. Madara rejects Hashirama's belief that future generations can preserve peace, insisting that power and a durable order are necessary to prevent war's return 154.

Life in Wave Country changes his outlook without erasing his conviction. After studying its education and society, Madara rejects both Hashirama's compromise-based village system and his own former reliance on Infinite Tsukuyomi. Premature Reincarnation

Black Zetsu's confrontation with Nagato causes Madara and Hashirama to be reincarnated ahead of schedule. Madara immediately identifies their Impure World Reincarnation state and attacks the Six Paths of Pain with Fire Release 146 147.

Madara later battles alongside the controlled Hashirama against Naruto. Their Susanoo-Clad Buddha damages Naruto's outer armor but fails to defeat him; Madara acknowledges Naruto's exceptional talent and promises a future battle before the reincarnation is released 151 153 154.

Capture by Naruto and Defection to Wave Country

Madara is reincarnated again and researches improvements to Impure World Reincarnation with Hiruko. Naruto finds him near Kannabi Bridge, overwhelms him, and captures Black Zetsu instead of immediately fighting Madara 217 249.

After learning that Black Zetsu manipulated him, Madara refuses to abandon his Shinobi Way outright. Naruto challenges him to spend a year in Wave Country and witness another route to peace. Madara tests Naruto with Perfect Susanoo and Tengai Shinsei, loses decisively, then accepts the offer 250 251.

Reassessment in Wave Country

While living in Wave Country, Madara attends first-year school classes with Black Zetsu. Observing children study rather than fight prompts him to reflect on the dream he once shared with Hashirama 254.

He concludes that neither compromise nor Infinite Tsukuyomi can maintain peace in a changing world. This becomes the basis of his revised belief that the Ninja World requires unification, order, and force rather than temporary negotiations 254.

Five-Tails Operation

Naruto assigns Madara to capture Han, the Five-Tails' jinchūriki, in Iwagakure. Madara openly attacks the village with Fire Release, draws out Ōnoki, and reveals his Wood Release and Susanoo during their confrontation 280 281.

The attack devastates Iwagakure badly enough that Ōnoki is overwhelmed and calls for a Five Kage Summit 283.

Fourth Shinobi World War

Madara accompanies his students to Konoha for the Chunin Exams, where Tobirama confronts him over the presence of four tailed beasts. Madara insists that Wave Country's conflict will be a war between the old Ninja World and the new order it seeks to establish 297.

During the Fourth Shinobi World War, Madara battles Hashirama and other reincarnated shinobi. He demonstrates a Sage Mode Hashirama considers superior to his own and openly declares his faith in Wave Country's leader 304.

After Naruto's victory unifies the Ninja World, Madara remains with Hashirama and Tobirama to witness the end of the old order 310.
