Background / History
Chen Yao is Chen Mu's half-sister and is two months younger than him. Their relationship was good from childhood, though Chen Mu initially knew her primarily through the original body's memories before later recognizing her as family in her own right 17 61 131.
She trained in the Martial Dao from a young age and reached Eighth Rank at sixteen. In contrast to expectations placed on a noblewoman, she refused marriage because her heart was set on martial arts 17 35 36. When Chen Mu began training at the Xuanguo Estate's Martial Arts Academy, she helped him select a suitable cultivation method and sought advice from Old Meng on her own bottlenecks 31 32.
Before her breakthrough to Seventh Rank, Chen Yao secretly fought in Yuan Wu Alley's Life and Death Arena as Nether Fox. She entered to sharpen her will rather than for money, ultimately completing forty fights with thirty wins, six draws, four losses, and a seventeen-match winning streak 40 41. Her final arena match ended in victory over Lu Sheng, after which she destroyed her Nether Fox plaque and left the alley to pursue higher realms 41 42.
A Paradise Cult member targeted her after she left Yuan Wu Alley. Chen Yao refused recruitment, attempted to take her own life rather than be captured, and was saved when Chen Mu arrived and killed the Fifth Rank cultist 42 43. Seeing the gap between her own strength and Chen Mu's Daoist Arts only strengthened her resolve to continue cultivating 44.
After reaching Seventh Rank, Chen Yao joined the Yuantian Guard as a Garrison Vice Captain. She trained and fought demons in Qing Province, where her defeat of a transforming great demon earned major merit and heightened attention from the Guard 81 102. She later converted from Martial Dao to cultivation, declaring that she no longer wished merely to become a Martial Saintess, but a True Person 145 147.
Over the following years, she traveled widely, challenged the younger generation of the Eight Great Sects, and became recognized as their foremost peer 138. Her exceptional fortune led her to Neon Cloud True Lord's remnant soul and inheritance during the Heavenly Palace Secret Realm incident 158 170 171.
Chen Yao was later swept through the Spirit Realm, captured on Sky Pivot Continent by a high-level True Lord, and imprisoned in the Devouring Heaven Great Saint's Ten Thousand Bones Cave 214 220. Chen Mu ultimately rescued her when he destroyed Ten Thousand Bones Mountain and freed its captives 222.
Appearance
Chen Yao is described as a pretty young woman with a lively, heroic air. Though she could appear seventeen or eighteen due to her vigorous development, she was actually slightly younger than Chen Mu 31.
- Heroic brows and a clear, pleasant voice 31.
- A vigorous physique and dense blood qi from Martial Dao training 17 36.
- Often carries a sword when training or fighting 39 102.
- After Foundation Establishment, her body became crystal-clear like jade and naturally carried a faint fragrance 154.
Personality
Chen Yao is playful and outspoken with those close to her, especially Chen Mu. She teases him about Spirit Sight, speaks in deliberately dramatic terms of repayment, and often behaves more like a Jianghu martial artist than a conventional daughter of the Xuanguo Estate 35 36 81.
Her defining trait is an uncompromising commitment to the Martial Dao. She willingly entered life-and-death fights to forge her will, treated victory and defeat as necessary steps toward higher realms, and aspired beyond Seventh Rank to the Sixth, Fifth, and ultimately First Rank 40 41. Even under a Fifth Rank Martial Artist's coercion, she refused to yield and preferred death to capture 42.
She is also loyal and protective of family. She immediately rejected accusations that Ning Qiang had colluded with an Evil Cult, and she retains deep trust in Chen Mu despite being shaken by the revelation that he was not the original Chen Mu 69 130.
