Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Mount Myōboku Sage Mode 81 After ten years of study, could barely control Sage Mode. He needed Fukasaku and Shima to rapidly gather Natural Energy, making solo combat use impractical. 81
Perfect Sage Mode 285 Recovered at Mount Myōboku with heightened sensitivity to Natural Energy; could enter Perfect Sage Mode instantly and maintain it indefinitely without the two sages' aid. 285

Background

Jiraiya trained under Hiruzen Sarutobi alongside Tsunade and Orochimaru. Compared with his gifted teammates, he initially struggled to close the gap in strength. His encounter with Mount Myōboku, Gamabunta, and its Sage Mode training allowed him to become a Sannin-level shinobi and adopt the identity of the Toad Sage. 117

He formed a profound attachment to Mount Myōboku, considering it his second home and, at one point, feeling a stronger sense of belonging there than in Konoha. His usual forehead protector bearing the character for “oil” honored the sacred land’s toad oil. 117

Jiraiya later became Minato Namikaze's teacher and also mentored Yahiko, Konan, and Nagato. His ideals centered on mutual understanding and ending conflict, values that Minato inherited. 116 147

Appearance

Jiraiya is a white-haired man nearly two meters tall. 8 117

  • Often wears a forehead protector marked with the character for “oil,” representing Mount Myōboku. 117
  • In Sage Mode, he develops red facial markings and toad-like eyes. 285
  • His earlier Sage Mode could cause increasingly pronounced toad-like facial and limb features during extended fusion. 200

Personality

Jiraiya is impulsive, outspoken, and sometimes naïve. His concern over Orochimaru's human experiments contrasted sharply with Hiruzen's pragmatic acceptance of them, and Hiruzen openly considered Jiraiya too quick to make a fuss. 150

Despite this, he is deeply loyal to those he considers his own. He repeatedly sought out Nagato despite the danger, felt responsible for his former students, and accepted difficult duties for Konoha even when reluctant. 196 198 224

His greatest conflict was between Konoha, where he had lived and become a Sannin, and Mount Myōboku, which had given him the strength and belonging he felt he lacked. When forced to choose, he ultimately sided with Mount Myōboku. 297

Abilities & Skills

Mount Myōboku Sage Mode

Jiraiya uses Mount Myōboku's Sage Arts by absorbing Natural Energy.

  • Initially required Sage Fukasaku and Sage Shima to balance and gather Natural Energy quickly enough for combat. 81 104
  • Prolonged fusion in his earlier state risked turning him into a toad statue. 200
  • Later achieved Perfect Sage Mode, allowing immediate activation and indefinite maintenance without assistance. 285
  • Mount Myōboku's inherited scroll included Sage Mode techniques, a chakra-hiding technique, and a two-toad musical genjutsu score. 303

Toad Summoning

Jiraiya is a contractor of Mount Myōboku and can summon its toads or be reverse-summoned to the sacred land.

  • Worked with Gamabunta, Gamaken, Gamahiro, Fukasaku, and Shima. 117 196 301
  • Gamaken rescued him after Nagato severely injured him. 196
  • Used reverse summoning with Minato to escape a failed assassination attempt on the One-Tails Jinchūriki. 116 117

Hair Techniques

Jiraiya can extend and harden his hair for offense and defense.

  • Hardened his hair to block a shuriken while tracking Nagato. 196
  • Used Needle Jizō to defend against a homing missile. 196
  • Can rapidly grow and harden his hair like steel in battle. 104

Ninjutsu and Combat Skill

Jiraiya is a Kage-level shinobi proficient in hand seals, battlefield ninjutsu, and evasive techniques. 198 324

  • Earth Release: Swamp of the Underworld — creates a large swamp to restrain or disrupt opponents. 196
  • Fire Release: Great Fireball — used to obscure Uchiha Yoichi's vision during an attempted escape. 324
  • Shadow Clone Technique — used in combination with deception and Earth Release to evade pursuit. 324
  • Body Flicker Technique and Substitution Technique — used for rapid evasion. 295 298

Hagoromo's Possession

After consuming a Sage's Pill given by the Great Toad Sage, Jiraiya became a vessel through which Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki could communicate from the Pure Land. 249 284 299

  • While possessed, his body manifested Hagoromo's appearance, a Truth-Seeking Ball staff, Rinnegan, and Truth-Seeking Orbs. 284 295
  • In this state, Hagoromo used Six Paths: Planetary Devastation to seal Uchiha Yoichi and Shinra Tensei against Tobirama's attack. 295
  • The possession left Jiraiya alive but almost completely drained of chakra after Hagoromo's defeat. 296

Items

  • Sage's Pill — given by the Great Toad Sage and consumed by Jiraiya; later revealed to enable passive communication with the Pure Land. 249 299
  • Sage's Talisman — entrusted to him alongside the pill for a future crisis. 249
  • Barrier scroll — given by Gamamaru, allowing Jiraiya to escape Mount Myōboku during its destruction. 302
  • Mount Myōboku Sage Arts scroll — received after his escape, containing the sacred land's remaining techniques and records. 303

  • Tsunade — former teammate and fellow Sannin. She often mocked his foolishness but fought alongside him as part of Konoha's legendary trio. 81 215
  • Orochimaru — former teammate and close friend. Jiraiya confronted him over human experimentation; Orochimaru later helped remove Jiraiya's seals so he could escape Konoha. 149 150 298
  • Minato Namikaze — disciple. They conducted missions together, including an attempted assassination of the One-Tails Jinchūriki, and Minato remained concerned for Jiraiya after his recovery. 116 117 286
  • Nagato — former disciple. Their bond collapsed after Yahiko's death and Nagato's belief that Danzō and Konoha were responsible; Nagato later grievously wounded Jiraiya. 196
  • Yahiko and Konan — former disciples and Akatsuki founders. Jiraiya's investigation into their fate drew him into conflict with Nagato. 155 196
  • Sage Fukasaku and Sage Shima — Mount Myōboku sages who assisted his earlier Sage Mode and cared for him through his training and recovery. 81 200 285
  • Great Toad Sage — Mount Myōboku's elder and source of multiple prophecies that shaped Jiraiya's actions. The Sage gave him the pill that enabled Hagoromo's possession. 117 249 299
  • Uchiha Yoichi — political opponent and eventual killer. Jiraiya suspected Yoichi's connection to prophecies concerning Mount Myōboku, opposed him after the sacred land's destruction, and was ultimately killed while attempting to evade him. 180 297 324

Following a failed attempt to assassinate the One-Tails Jinchūriki with Minato, Jiraiya was summoned to Mount Myōboku. Hagoromo's Vessel

Jiraiya collapsed and was brought to Mount Myōboku, where the Great Toad Sage revealed that Hagoromo had possessed him. After recovering, Jiraiya unexpectedly gained Perfect Sage Mode. 284 285

Exile, Mount Myōboku's Fall, and Death

After the attack, Yoichi demanded that Jiraiya choose between Konoha and Mount Myōboku. Jiraiya chose Mount Myōboku, lost his Konoha shinobi status, and escaped with Orochimaru's assistance. 297 298

He returned to Mount Myōboku and learned that the Great Toad Sage had knowingly enabled Hagoromo's possession. During Konoha and Ryūchi Cave's assault on Mount Myōboku, Jiraiya was tasked with restoring its barrier but escaped through a barrier scroll as the sacred land fell. 299 301 302
