Metaphysical Nature

Imperial Consciousness

The Imperial Consciousness is a layer that reflects Terra’s built environment while apparently excluding living beings. Surtr’s movements there do not interfere with her coordinates in the real world, and locations occupied by people in reality may appear empty in the reflection. 145

• Its landscape includes decayed reflections of real buildings, bone-paved roads, dense fog, and deformed creatures. 145 146
• Surtr suspects it may be “Terra’s hell,” though the creatures she observes initially coexist without visible predation or territorial behavior. 145 146
• Outside the reflected city, the creatures become violently aggressive after Surtr leaves their vicinity. 146

Sea of Death

A black ocean within Terra’s deeper metaphysical landscape is formed from accumulated death, grief, exploitation, war, and despair. Ordinary mortals who touch it risk having their bodies and personalities erased or assimilated. 228

Ancient Threats

• Ancient gods and evil entities are believed to exist beyond Terra’s known civilizations, including in the north of Sami and south of Sargon. 323
• Kal’tsit suspects that an unprecedented super-Originium lifeform—an ancient god and the source of Originium crystals—lies deep beneath the planet. 323
• The world itself is considered among the deeper threats Terra may ultimately need to confront. 323

Relationship with Originium

• Originium is described as alive and capable of reacting to lethal threats by manifesting what its host fears most; if that final resistance fails, its material structure disintegrates into debris. 3
• Terra’s dependence on Originium makes eliminating Originium Infection alone an incomplete solution: Originium remains a pillar of its industrial system. 323
• Terra-version Visions can absorb and store Originium energy. Their users are immune to Originium Infection or can gradually recover if exposure is not sustained. 128
• Several of the few known cures for Originium Infection are connected to Surtr’s power. 319

Role in the Story

• Terra is Surtr’s main world and the location of her true body; dream-realm bodies are secondary vessels that return her consciousness to Terra upon death or awakening. 6
